Stayed overnight in this lovely guest house in a Georgian building recently. Comfortable rooms and a great & varied breakfast menu. We didn't eat in their busy famous Tapas Bar, but had a "night cap" there later in the evening. The owners and staff were very friendly and helpful.
I booked Townshend house as we were having a family get together in town and we have stayed there before. My mother and I were to stay there and my mother is physically disabled so has problems with stairs. I booked through a booking app, but (admittedly) did not put on the app that I needed a downstairs room. I did however ring the property directly 2 months ahead of the event to confirm that the downstairs room be available and spoke to a woman who confirmed that it hadn't been reserved by anyone else and they would reserve it for us. However when I arrived on the day, the room was not available and instead of being apologetic or trying to help us in our predicament, the manager proceeded to tell me that it was my fault for not adding a note to the booking app reservation and basically insinuated that I was a liar when I told him that I didn't need to do that as I rang the establishment directly. I said that I could prove that I rang from the call log in my phone and he said 'Well anyone can ring and hang up'. I'm not one to leave bad review but this customer service was so appallingly bad that I felt the need to leave one. The management should look at how they deal with these situations as even a apology would have went a long way, in this situation. My poor mother was very upset by the whole thing. …
There is no parking on the premises as advertised and we were directed to street parking. Our small room was crowded with very nice antique furniture—no way to open two suitcases in the room at the same time however. There is no air conditioning so the window must be open for a bit of air— as our room was directly on the Main Street we had quite a bit of street noise especially Saturday night. WiFi was inadequate with a very weak signal sometimes and none at others. It took us over an hour to get connected—frustrating when we learned there was a different password not mentioned in the Guest Book. No soap for the shower. Empty Kleenex box. Although there were a number of small lamps in our room none of them gave off sufficient light to read by. Reading is ONLY by the window in broad daylight. TAPAS Restaurant is attached to and part of the Townsend House. This is a wonderful find and quite busy on Saturday night. Excellent food, reasonably priced, in typical tapas-style smaller portions, which was a very nice change from a few weeks of Pub food. …
Stayed for a night with friends in a gorgeous family room. Spotlessly clean & comfortable. Booked dinner in the Tapas restaurant, super food, fabulous wine list. Martin, family & staff could not have been more welcoming & accommodating. So friendly, nothing was too much trouble. Can’t wait to return!!!
We were their first booking of 2021 and we had the best time. The rooms are lovely, the food was great, the staff very friendly and very accommodating. Couldn't recommend the place highly enough. Thanks for a great few days.
Recently returned to my home town of Birr and Townsend B&B was my first choice to stay with my family. Operated now for two generations by the well respected Kearn’s family it is the ideal location to fully experience all that the historic midlands town of Birr can offer. The family room exceeded our expectations and breakfast the next morning kept us going for our long drive that day. The icing on the cake was the family’s Tapas restaurant just located next door with its extensive menu and top class wines. Would highly recommend and will definitely stay again.
Cannot highly recommend this beautiful b&b in Birr. Martin & Lorraine couldnt do enough for our familpy. They treated us as part of their family. Breakfast outstanding, hospitality and care amazing .lovely and clean, could not recommend enough! A big big thank you from our family.
We stayed overnight at Townsend House to visit an exhibition in Birr library. It is a beautiful period property with spacious rooms. We were very comfortable and it is within easy walking distance of the centre and all the town's attractions. There was a small family group of us and we were in 3 rooms. It's not on a very busy main road, but if you are not used to noise then ask for one of the rooms at the back of the property.
These people are so kind and gentle and care for you. I have never slept in a four poster bed so that wa sfun. The whole guest house has also a beautiful restaurant to in this stunning castle town. Clean and fullof beautifully cared for antiquities. A lovely place to stay. The breakfast fabulously delicious an doffers wedding catering too.
