I rented a studio apartment at The Maltings in Birr for 3 months. The rooms have been renovated to a high standard and come furnished with everything you need for an extended stay. The building itself is very secure and there is ample parking outside. The rooms overlook and couldn’t be closer to the Camcor River, which is very beautiful with a weir a short distance downstream. Dealing with Canbe Hospitality could not have been more efficient or pleasant. All in all, I highly recommend this establishment.

Birr is a heritage town and has many fine walks. The Castle Demesne is a short stroll away and is well worth a visit, with great areas to explore, beautiful gardens, kilometers of pathways and the historical great telescope, the Leviathan, onsite.

beautiful and pleasant setting in an converted Guinness malt house. Birr is a small community along the Shannon river. The restaurant area in The Maltings faces the river and allows for a filling and calming breakfast at part of your stay.

We found it by accident, stayed two extra days, and only left to catch our flight. Nest time I'm bringing a fishing pole. Luckily we got there in the off season and had our pick of seats in the dinning room. Breakfast in the bay overlooking the river made you want to eat twice. Hope we can get back there soon.

I just put a rating in to get to this page- The Maltings has closed and is no longer operational, therefore, a waste of time promoting it.
You welcome .
Why more words / said what must be said - it was lovely, served the best breakfasts I had ever enjoyed but now CLOSED

As a group of anything between 8 & 15 golfers we stay at 'The Maltings' which gives us easy access to the local golf courses at Birr, Tullamore, Esker Hills, Roscrea & Portumna. Friendly service which is second to none, excellent bar, close to the town's local pubs and a full Irish breakfast to start the day, well, that works for us. Very highly recommended

What a charming Guest House/hotel. A stone, two story building formerly used to hold hops for the making of Guiness. Right next to Birr Castle (with its fantastic gardens!) Located right on a small river with falls, with cute pub and excellent restraurant, we couldn't have been more pleased. At E60 double including full breakfast and tea/coffee with cookies etc in room - what value! Within easy walking distance of town square and Birr Castle. With caring and personalized service, this is a hidden jewel. Much quieter than Dooleys on the square. Don't miss this lovely place as well as the Midlands of Ireland.

This is a wonderful little hotel in a great little town. Birr is a great way to see the "real Ireland." The rooms are about normal size for what you would expect in an American hotel, with GREAT water pressure in the shower. Everything was very clean and the bed was comfortable. This place was also very quiet and restful. The breakfast area is wonderful, especially if you can get a seat in the little conservatory overlooking the river. Breakfast was very good, and dinner was good. There is a great little pub across the street, Cavanaughs (I think), and a lot of good restaurants within very close walking distance.

I would highly recommmend The Maltings.

Gorgeous little Irish town, beautiful surroundings and great value. The Maltings is run by one of the nicest families i have met, you get a real feel for the friendly people in this country. Set on a river and adjacent to the historic Birr Castle, The Maltings is a two minute walk from everything, and filled with character! A true experience of Irish hospitality, that i cannot wait to revisit!

I have stayed at the Maltings before and always found it to be a wonderful experience. B&B prices, hotel features.

My single room was in fact a triple, and I was more than happy with it.

Until bedtime.

The second night was awful. My room was above the bar area and they were throwing a birthday party. Its was pretty loud and meant I could not sleep until 1pm when it had finished.

However, the guests moved out the back overlooking the river at this time and I spent the next hour listening to teenagers crying because they had drunk too much.

At 3am when I had just got to sleep 2 fly fisherman creeped round the back and I could hear was their mutterings and the flicking of their rods. This went on for 2 hours when i finally fell asleep.

The next day I was tired and the day was pretty ruined. The location of Birr means that going anywhere coastal involves a long drive. I came back early and tried to sleep, just as well because the same night brought more fisherman.

Some poor man was heard shouting in the middle of the night for them to shut up.

All in all, unless you have to be in Birr, steer away otherwise aim for more coastal regions.

By the way, I did compain and got a £20 discount. Not impressive seeing as i was with my grandmother as well and she was kept up 2 nites running.

stone building looks good from outside but unsympathetically restored and a bit soulless inside, owner is paid by state to communally house refugees/immigrants next door, you get some Nigerian culture along with the irish.
