We stayed just one night here but we found the room to be comfortable and the staff were friendly and helpful.
It's an old hotel (1747) and the decor is in line with that. The shower in our room was adequate but could do with an upgrade and the TV in the room was the size of a postage stamp, it wasn't an issue for us but if someone is staying a few days they might want something that they can see from the bed.
Breakfast in the morning was nice, the usual Irish fry up though there was an option for pancakes too.
Birr is small and the hotel is located smack bang in the centre, a short walk from everywhere.
The nightclub on site was closed due to Covid restrictions when we were there but I imagine that could be noisy for rooms facing Emmet Square. The hotel bar looked nice but we didn't use it and opted for pubs in the town.

We went to the bar for food as a family of 5 and were dissapointed. Fish and chips was no fish only greasy batter and skin of fish dripping with oil.
We called a waiter and asked him to change it he came back telling us there was 5 oz of fish in that batter!! But said were going to change it at that stage my appetite was ruined. My new portion of fish came when everyone else at the table were finished their food so we refused to take it.
We asked for a bill and the blasted fish was on our bill of course. When we said we were not paying for that battered skin we were informed that we still had to pay for it !!! Despicable. We asked for a manager and we said the rest of the dishes were really tasty, but not happy with the fish. We paid for half a portion and left never to come back again.

We stayed whilst visiting family, lovely hotel with fantastic staff who are very friendly and so helpful. Food is good and portions are generous. A little noisey on a Saturday night once the disco starts. The decor is a little outdated and could do with a freshen up, doesn’t take away from a very comfortable stay

Visited Dooly’s just before 11:30am during the week and asked if we were in time to still have breakfast ? Staff there reluctantly said yes , so we ordered 3 full Irish breakfasts.

We waited ages and then the food was brought out in drabs, very slowly and was cold when it arrived. Tea was brought out 20 minutes after the food was brought out! Toast was over done and the fried breakfast was very pore quality. Meal consisted of an egg each, a slice of bacon, a thin sausage, a half Tomato, some tined mushrooms and very hard toast. No soda bread, no hash browns, No Potato cakes , no black pudding, or white pudding! No beans. I ordered a tea with oat milk and was told they don’t have a milk alternative? Unbelievable as it’s 2022 not 1922! So I had to purchase a soft drink with my meal We ended up not getting the 3rd cup of tea, even though it was meant to come with the meal. I really felt like the makers of this breakfast were stingy and mean and care very little for the customers satisfactions! We mentioned our dissatisfaction to one of the staff before leaving and was told very disingenuously that he would pass it in to management. Not a sorry, or a can we do anything to put it right !
We definitely will not be returning to Dooly’s hotel ever again!

I didn't think places this bad even existed anymore. I paid €320 for a double and a single room on a Saturday night. The true value of the rooms might be €80 per room at best. It was just awful. Broken fixtures and fittings, peeling wallpaper, visible signs of water ingress, damp and mould throughout bedroom and bathroom. Missing/broken lightbulbs. Missing/broken window handles. Really not acceptable, Not even an attempt by housekeeping to scrub the mould off the tiles in the bathroom! Ancient shower fitting connected to tap. Carpets and furnishings visibly unclean/torn and tatty. (Room numbers 32 and 35).

I was warned by staff that the nightclub on Saturday night would be noisy and it certainly was. I sort of got used to the throbbing techno music after a few hours and got some sleep. When the nightclub emptied out there was a symphony of screams from the punters that might wake the dead. Breakfast was a fairly miserable affair, you had to ask for cereal/pastries as they don't display them openly for some reason, perhaps they are afraid it would improve the overall look of the place. Cooked breakfast was average at best.

We are just back from a 2night stay and it's a real mixed bag. The receptionist that checked us in was lovely, very efficient. The room was awful, 2 good sized beds but the place just gave me the ick. The handles on the bathroom window were broken off, the other window was an old sash window and had mould all over the inside and cobwebs. There was a square missing from the roof that had just been replaced with a piece of ply wood. Bedding seemed clean but the throws and cushions etc were rotten. The kettle in a family room was sitting in a shelf, the cable hung over that was reachable by the kids so every time we used the kettle we had to move it out of reach from the kids. The room was Baltic when we arrived, so we asked for the heating to be put on, it was put on to them in fairness but we were cooked with the heat as the room had no ventilation. The next day the heating wasn't turned on at all so we were frozen again. Breakfast was beautiful and the women working in the coffee shop were fantastic but again the place just needs some tlc, it's very rundown. We ate in the bar on the Saturday night as a large group. It was crazy busy but very well handled, everyone left happy. The lady working in the bar (seemed like the manager) deserves a pay rise as they wouldn't have coped without her and she was very attentive throughout our whole stay. We weren't asked when we were leaving how our stay was and tbh there was too much to list out to the poor girl at reception. It wasn't the staffs fault. It's an ownership/management issue. I understand the hotel is an old building that they want to preserve but it needs some work, some serious work. We spent a scandalous amount of money for what we got.

Fab food, very tasty, great service. Would recommend the prawns starter and the chicken and mushroom vól au vent for main course. Location is perfect for visiting Birr Town, Birr Castle Gardens or going to Lough Boora Discovery Park

Arrived to Dooley's on a bank holiday Monday at about 12:30pm. We were seated straight away in a family booth in the bar and given menus. Great selection of food available at decent prices for Birr. I got the Caesar salad and my husband got the wings. He is very picky about wings and he really enjoyed them. The salad was tasty. The kids enjoyed their chicken goujons and chips which were very decent portions. Could not fault the staff who checked in on us twice which was lovely. We got a large jug of miwadi also which was not watered down like in usual places. I'm a regular to Birr but have rarely eaten here and will definitely make this our new place. €30 fed our family of 4 well. Would highly recommend if you're in the area.

Dreadful dining experience yesterday for a family celebratory meal for c 20 people.
Group started to arrive about 13.00pm. Orders taken about 13.30. Did not have a standard Sauvignon blanc wine. Starters arrived but hot starters were cold - one of the party had to have his soup reserved THREE times before he received a hot serving. Main courses did not start to arrive until 2.30.
The young staff were trying to cope, it felt that their training was minimal.
Supervisor was apologetic but the event had been ruined for many at that stage.
This quality experience should be a major issue for the hotel owners do not want their reputation damaged.
Avoid!

We stayed at Dooleys for three nights, the staff, from reception, bar, coffee shop, to cleaners were so warm and welcoming, and could not do enough for you, our room was very comfortable and clean, and the food was lovely. It is the oldest hotel in the country which I did not know until the young gentleman on reception shared with us when we arrived. I will definitely stay again.
