I have stayed in Ballyvaughan many times but this place is just a disgrace. We stayed in holiday house behind the hotel. The grounds are overgrown with weeds and is very unkempt. There is a playground advertised but its not the actual playground. The playground is lethal with a rotten structure and rundown equipment. The lights in one of the bedrooms did not work and the toilet wouldn't flush. In both ensuite bathrooms the tiles were cracked and loose. Plug sockets and window handles were so loose, they were barely staying on. The water tank is air locked as it makes a horrendous noise each time the plumbing is used. The walls and ceilings had damp patches. The outside light for the patio was not working. The internal doors would not close without being locked. The fridge was turned off when we arrived and it does not have an icebox or freezer compartment. The kitchen table can only seat four people yet the house is advertised for six people. There was dead flies and bugs on all window sills. The veneer was missing from the kitchen cabinets but I found them on the floor... so I wonder if the floor is ever cleaned? The blinds are damaged and curtains are stained. There was no towels, tea towels, toilet roll, soap or dish washing products provided. There is no wifi or street lights working in the complex. I could not recommend this hotel to anyone, it is an absolute disgrace. The manager and owner has no talent or skill to be in the hospitality industustry.

We would have liked to have known in advance that the absolute basic essentials would not be provided (i.e. hand soap, hand towels, something to wash up dishes so we wouldn't have to leave them dirty when leaving). I asked at reception for soap and the owner was rude and argued that the houses were self catering and therefore no toiletries were provided, I wouldn't call soap a toiletry, it's an essential product - especially during a pandemic! In the end he gave me two bars of hotel soap that he took from a hotel room. There was no screen at reception for protection and the owner wore his mask on his chin. A minimal amount of toilet paper was provided, you need to buy more yourself. The kitchen utensils were dirty, there was bits of egg left in the whisk. The house was tired looking, lots of stains on the filthy carpets, the bed linens and curtains. Pieces of the arm chair were flaking off on to the carpet after sitting on it. One toilet had no toilet seat. The grounds were very overgrown. On the positive side, it was a 2 minute walk to the centre of the village. Lovely scenic walk. The entrance to the grounds overlooks the pier. Probably worth noting that there was nothing happening in the village, only 3 places to eat (book in advance), local shop closes at 8.30pm and they don't have an off license. 20 minutes drive to next villages. 40 min drive to doolin and lahinch.
Our sitting room had beautiful views of the burren. Lovely outdoor seating area.

I don't know where to start. From the moment we walked in, we felt uneasy.
The owner was there - he took payment straight away. I noticed there wasn't any obvious Covid19 awareness. No screen, the owner wasn't wearing a mask. He handed me a key and told me where to go. There was no sticker on the room door to indicate the room had been sanitised/cleaned. The bathroom was disgusting. There were 2 glasses with lips stains on them. Cobwebs hanging from the ceiling.
There was dust all over the headboard. The remote control was thick with dirt in between the buttons. it was abundantly clean this room was not clean. We took a walk into the bar/restaurant and the smell of dirty dishcloth was overwhelming. My husband went to use the mens bathroom and he came out just as quick. Not a toilet roll in sight and dirty sinks.
I tracked down the owner and explained we didn't feel comfortable staying here and pointed all of our concerns. He said he didn't care and under no circumstances were we getting a refund and he didn't care what we'd do and told me to stop complaining.
Long story short, we went down to Monks to get out of the place. We rang a couple of places and turns out the whole town knows about this man and the way he's running the hotel. Some said he's giving Ballyvaughan a bad name. I said absolutely not true, as everyone we encountered outside of this dirt ridden place were lovely. I am seeing further about getting a refund as we felt vulnerable in this place in these COVID19 times.
I couldn't comment on the food as there was no way on earth we would be eating there after seeing the state of the grounds & and filth

When we got there, there was no one around to check in, but rock music was cranking. An elder gentleman finally showed up. We had to ask him to turn down the music in order to hear him. We had pre-booked through Booking.com but they had no record. Thankfully I brought the computer printout. Only got a hand written receipt. We never saw him again. We tried calling for help with an issue and he never answered his phone. There was of course no one at the desk when we checked out a couple of days later so we just left the key.

We were clearly the only people in the complex. It was very weird.

The restaurant was never open. The outside was shabby and the grounds unkempt. We couldn't get the washing machine to run so I called the help number on the laminated heater instructions and got the former owner from a couple of years ago. There were cobwebs all over the place and loose tiles on the floor. There were no towels and we could never find anyone to "rent" us towels. There was no toilet paper but we were able to get some from a neighboring townhouse that was left wide open (supposedly to air it out).

This place is in a great location and could be a really nice place but it needs a huge amount of maintenance, updating, and friendly and helpful staff.

(Oh yeah, it was advertised as having a washer and dryer. The "dryer" was a rack in one of the closets in the first floor. They might want to work on the veracity of their advertising).

Paid on check in, once paid up the rude receptionist and owner told us there were no bath towels, which we accepted, as hand towels were available. We felt like an inconvenience to him. What the owner didn't tell us was that there was no hot water, that evening or the following morning. I spoke with owner about this on check out, he just shrugged his shoulders. I won't be going back despite the lovely bed.

We really enjoyed our trip to county clare until we got to the Burren Atlantic Hotel & Holiday village..  when we arrived we were greeted with the finest smell of damp and a very quiet reception. A man came out who asked cash or card and handed us the keys not to even tell us what number room ,nor any small talk about food, facilities nevermind a somewhat warm reception you would usually recieve at a "hotel". When we found our room through the disguisting smells in the hallway the bedroom was no better. The pillow cases werent even clean, the dust and spiderwebs around the room was horrid. When it was time for some grub I asked the man at reception do they have a bar or resturant for food with a short reply of no i asked for recommendations to be given a kebab takeaway is all. Thankfully a kind lady in the service station nearby was very helpful with helping us find somewhere to eat and thankfully we managed to get some food. This place has great potential as it has the "hotel" and apartments but unfortunately its horrendous and ran to the ground. Considering the price for 1 night, not a bit of food no assitance at all I would advise everyone not to even consider this place. The dust had us so chesty it was vile and to find out the resturant and bar was closed due to the health inspectorate closing it down was the tip of the iceberg. We searched the whole village for somewere to stay for the night with no avail which wasnt surprising considering being here at peak tourist time..

Booked hotel for two nights at short notice on Booking.com as I decided to do a short mid-week break with my son. As soon as I arrived I got a bad feeling. No-one at reception to meet at check in, just a note on an A4 sheet of paper to ring a number and someone would come. Got checked in and went to room - I reckon we were the only people staying in the hotel that night. Room was clean but there were no tea/coffee facilities. Went for breakfast the next morning and tables hadn't been wiped and were not set, no cutlery or crockery. Basic cereals, fruit and orange juice only. Had a quick bowl of cereal and headed off. Arrived back that evening to discover that someone had been in our room and changed the towels but didn't make the beds or empty the rubbish bins (basic stuff).
Following morning we were woken with a knock at the door at 07.55 to ask if we had any running water. I checked and sure enough, there was no running water!!! Ended up brushing our teeth with bottled water we had ourselves and couldn't get a shower. Requested a receipt on checking out and the girl on reception couldn't even do this as the printer wasn't working, so we just left.

In summary, how a hotel like this can be on any booking platform is beyond belief. I've stayed in many hotels but nothing comes close to this. AVOID AVOID AVOID!!

So the Hotel is understaffed, the owner does everything himself from the reception desk to the bar and kitchen. He's not very nice or pleasant at all and seems to have a chip on his shoulder about the reasonable standards his visitors expect. He made some frosty remarks to us while we were checking in.

While the building itself is serviceable the grounds particularly at the rear of the property where the bedrooms look onto are quite dirty and unkempt. The television did not work in our room. The toilet's flush required multiple attempts to do its job. The bedside lampshades in the room were broken and sitting on top of the light bulbs. The bathroom glasses provided were dirty. The WiFi did not work.

I would normally highlight these issues to the reception but I knew it would have involved an argument with the owner after the frosty reception we received. And if you read other reviews you will see this are long running issues in this establishment.

The sad thing is the hotel building/room was actually ok with a relatively modern decoration. With some proper staffing and a better standard of maintenance it could be an alright place to stay as Ballyvaughn itself is great.

I was booked to go last week and informed the property via phone that we would not be able to make it as my daughter was ill
A staff member agreed that this was a valid reason to cancel my booking and I stayed on the phone as I cancelled and she agreed to waive the fee through booking.com
However when I was home a few days later €160 was taken out of my bank account without my permission despite being told the fee would be waived
I rang and spoke to the manager who basically told me his staff had no permission to rob him and his hotel and that the fee would not be waived and she had no permission to agree to this
The manager handled this so badly and was rude. It’s unethical to take someone’s money without their permission
if your staff is not trained properly then don’t hold her responsible when they the did the right thing. Its the managers job to train his staff and to uphold any mistakes made by them.
We chose to ignore all the horrible reviews and said ww would make up our own minds
how wrong was we were
We should have listened to all of these reviews my advice is to avoid this place as the manager clearly has no interest in his customers and it’s just out to make money.
Shame on him

It’s a pitty I cannot give this place half of a point ! We had booked one night in This place through booking.com four months in advance for my fathers 80th birthday ! We didn’t want any surprises and had paid for all bookings. Three weeks before our arrival ... we received an email telling us they had a two night policy and that they couldn’t have us! We could either cancel ourselves or find another arrangement But we had paid fully for our two rooms !!!! So I wrote several emails and called to know how to get my money back but NO COMMUNICATION what so ever. I wasn’t gonna cancel as if it was my idea because it wasn’t !
It seems that when the hotel is empty they fill in with one day reservations and when it gets fuller they just ask the people to cancel What a shame and a scam !
I would definitely avoid this place with rotten manners and no concern for the clients !
