Stayed here one night but spent the day walking the town and down to the Swiss Cottage. There is a Tourist Office 5min away in the centre of town (walking)and a great coffee shop across the street on the 2nd floor.Cahir Castle is very nicely restored (4min away walking). Excellent guided tour! Plus you could explore on your own which is great for us who like to take lots of time (care)with our pictures. The B&B was an old prison turned into a castle like structure. Best looking place we stayed at in Ireland. Inside was clean and pleasant but not much space as you might expect. For the price I would reccommend it as something different the most B&Bs. The pictures of the B&B are very impresive. We stayed in a castle. Definitely worth a night.

We stayed one night in this castle in Cahir, Ireland. The place is amazing. From the outside it is every bit a castle. From the inside, it is a charming, comfortable home, run by a charming and fun owner, Peig. Peig sat and talked with us for an hour and had us all in stitches. She was a great host. The only drawback was that the place was a little cold. Ireland was experiencing the coldest weather they had had in years. The castle was obviously a little cold too. I would not hesitate to stay there again. It was the most unique place we stayed on our 10 day stay in Ireland. It was great! And have Peig show you her monkey puzzle tree. You've probably never seen anything like it.

Just back from a pleasant three-night stay at this former prison (bridewell) which is full of character both inside and out. I can't agree with the previous review writer - we had an orthopedic matress (checked it personally!) and antique furnishings...and this is a family home, so we weren't expecting hotel quality linen, but it's not far off. Very spacious grounds and interior, and very authentic prison doors - original I believe. Very reasonably tariff of 65 Euro per night ensuite for 2B&B. Would certainly return, and recommend.

I would avoid booking here if you can help it at all. The owner / host was incredibly rude to us upon arrival. We had told her what time we' be arriving, yet when we got there she asked us "what time did we call this?", and told us she had to sit in waiting for us all day...not exactly a warm welcome.
She asked us what time we'd be going out that evening, and told us she didn't appreciate people coming back in after 11pm, or having had too much to drink. It felt like staying in a cranky relatives house who was telling us off before we even did anything wrong.
We booked it because we thought it would be different to a regular B&B, but the price wasn't justified by our experience.
Avoid if you can at all, save your money and book a hotel or save more money on another B&B, that might at least treat paying customers with respect and manners.

I thought about not writing this review as I do tend to provide positive reviews on TripAdvisor for the most part (refer to my almost 150 other reviews); however, on returning home and reading many of the other reviews for this establishment, I feel that I could not in good conscience neglect to add my own experience.
I booked to stay in this B&B to attend a conference in Cahir Castle and drove down from Sligo on a fairly miserable evening to get here. I was looking forward to staying as who wouldn't like to stay in a castle, right? And I love staying in B&Bs in Ireland as they are always welcoming and cosy.
Except this one.
When I arrived I was asked by the proprietor, Peig [--], where my companion was. I was travelling alone so didn't really understand the question, but she informed me that the room held 2-3 people and she was not happy that I was alone (considering I was paying for the whole room, I wouldn't have thought this mattered). Anyway, she proceeded to tell me that her son had 'let her down' and that she was 'very angry'. I asked 'I'm sorry, I don't know what you mean?' while she then told me that I shouldn't have even been staying as her son booked me in 'by accident' and that the whole B&B had been booked out for the conference and that I had told her that I was part of that group.
I clarified with her, as I had via email, that I was indeed attending the conference, and that had been told, via email, that this was fine. She proceeded to shake her head, reiterate her anger, and tell me that I shouldn't even be staying there but 'sure you're here now'.
She said it so many times that I asked her if she wanted me to leave (after driving for almost 4 hours to get there).
She didn't say 'no' per se, but rather that 'there's nowhere else to stay now as everywhere else is booked out, so you're here now and that's that'.
Hmmmmm. Not the welcome I would normally be expecting. In fact, she was downright rude and I felt entirely uncomfortable and considered getting back in my car and driving home, only it was after 7.30 at this stage and I was tired.
She told me to come into the bathroom so she could show me how to work the shower. I said, no, it's fine, I'll manage, and she said 'no, I have to show you as the Americans can never work this shower'. Please note, it is the same as my shower at home. One button.
Once I had been berated a few more times about the fact that I shouldn't really be staying here (particularly on my own) she told me that I could come down for breakfast at 8.30 because she was aware that the conference didn't start till 9.30 and sure why would I need to be down any earlier. It's nice to have a choice, but hey, at this stage I wondered if I'd get a breakfast.
The only other people staying that night were 2 speakers at the conference (so why the big hoo-ha about me staying then, you might wonder?) and she informed me that they wanted breakfast at 8.15 (a whole 15 mins earlier than me) and she couldn't understand why they needed it 'so early'. At that point the lady came in and she quizzed her about why they needed breakfast at that time and couldn't they just come down at a more reasonable time like 8.30.
The mind boggles.
Anyway, I went off into the lovely village of Cahir for my dinner and met some very nice and welcoming locals and enjoyed a very nice veggie curry in the local hotel.
The next morning I was shouted at by Peig through my bedroom door, presumably to make sure I was up, and arrived in the dining room at 8.30 on the button. I was praised for my punctuality but was informed that the other 2 had not arrived yet and she was 'very angry'. I was also told that she has to keep the lady in the kitchen happy and that 'she's foreign after all' (not sure what relevance this has). I was also told that Peig likes dealing with Americans as they are organised, but that she doesn't like English or Irish guests as they don't seem to be able to organise themselves.
Nothing like a little casual racism over breakfast.
I was grabbed by the arm and told where to sit and received 2 fried eggs on some toast (I didn't get a choice about how my eggs were cooked). At this point the other 2 arrived and I proceeded to watch them be berated for Peig for arriving down 'so late' and when they tried to tell her they would take some breakfast with them, she made them sit down and eat like little children.
All we could do was look at each other and laugh uncomfortably because, well, what else do you do?
Peig continued to berate the other 2 guests about not coming down on time and told us that the lady reminded her of her sister in law who is relaxed and is fussed around by everyone while she carries on in her own little world. Please note, this was not said in a friendly or amusing anecdotal fashion, but more in an underhanded insulting way. Very passive-aggressive.
When the others had left, I hear Peig tell the lady in the kitchen that I was grand out in the dining room on my own because I'm 'normal'. Not sure whether that was meant as a compliment or an insult.
I attended my conference, which I really enjoyed, and decided to leave very early the next morning so I wouldn't have to deal with Peig at breakfast. When I asked her if I could pay, she was very gracious in accommodating me; however, informed me that they don't take cards (contrary to their website, booking.com, and the other reviews I read where she told other guests that she wouldn't accept cash, only cards). I went off into the town to get some cash, left it in my room, and decided that rather than spend another night in this room that smelled like bleach and had a baby picture of the owner's son over the bed, that I would head for home and spend the evening being treated like an adult instead.
I have no doubt that the owner's son will respond to this review in the same way I have seen him respond to other reviews, by focusing on the 'positives' (whether they be delivered sarcastically or in jest) and choosing to ignore all the negatives, but I will state that I love Ireland, I am proud of our hospitality as a nation, and I think that Carigeen Castle should do the Irish hospitality industry a big favour and close its doors so that no other unassuming travellers have to be subjected to this unwelcoming, disrespectful, and downright rude behaviour.
Did I mention the lack of shower gel even though the website stated that toiletries are provided?
No?
Never mind.
PS I'm including a photo of an apple I took from the dining room as the only positive image worth sharing.

My Mom and I stayed here a few weeks ago. We had a wonderful time in Ireland, however, we unfortunately decided to ignore the bad reviews about this "castle" (it doesn't look like a castle on the inside at all). We arrived twenty minutes past the check in time, which was between two and four. We were standing at the front door while it rained on us, ringing the doorbell for about ten minutes. We finally decided to walk around the back and when we knocked Mrs. Butler answered and told us to go back around to the front and ring the doorbell again. So we hauled our luggage back around to the front door and waited. She didn't answer the door until we rang the doorbell again… She then led us to our room and was very rough and rude. She asked us of our plans for the rest of our trip. She told us that everything we had planned was a terrible idea and how could she get it through our heads that we were stupid for wanting to do the horrible things on our itinerary… Yes, she really said that!! We had planned on taking a taxi to the next town because the bus would take over twice the time to get there. She said that she would call and set up a taxi for us. The first taxi she called said they would drive us for 180 Euro. She hung up with him and said he sounded very lazy on the phone which obviously annoyed her. She called a second person and said, "great news, I found you a taxi that will take you for 150 Euro". Yay! Maybe she's not so bad after all, we thought, she helped us find a deal on a taxi... The next morning she knocked on our door at 8:15 to make sure we would be at breakfast on time by 8:30. When we sat in our assigned seating, a nice couple we had met the night before came down and were saying hello to us. This angered Mrs. Butler, she yelled at them to sit in their assigned seats and to stop bothering us. They were startled and were very embarrassed at being yelled at in front of everyone at breakfast. So the taxi picked us up and drove us to our destination. When we got out or money to pay the agreed upon 150 Euro, it turned out, after a lot of calls were made, that Mrs. Butler had lied to us about which taxi was cheaper because she didn't like the "lazy" taxi driver and told us the other taxi was cheaper. It was actually 250 Euro and ended up costing us an extra 100 Euro. Such a horrible experience.

After reading all the terrible and horrible reviews about this place, we decided (as a lot of you do) to still go here because it looks like a castle, and castles are cool. Note that this was actually a former prison, and a few of the rooms are old prison cells.
The first meeting with Mrs Butler was actually ok, so we were starting to think that this wasn't all that bad. She showed us around the place and explained where we could go for dinner. So we went out, deciding that we bring in our luggage when we came back again after food+drinks.
At around 21:30 we came back, taking our luggage from the car and up the stairs. This was where the drama started. She was not at all pleased that we be taking our luggage up at this time of night. We sort of ignored her and went up. After taking a shower (in the common shower) we wanted to read a book and have a tea downstairs in the common room. All lights were already of so we put them on again and asked for some water to make tea. We were scolded for turning on the light and she repeatedly let us know that 22:00 was "a time of sleeping", not "a time of drinking tea". She also repeatedly told us that "we have to look out for number 1", which is presumably the room next to the common room?
She seemed totally crazy, which was again confirmed when she scolded a boy for not finishing his breakfast the morning after.
Don't go here, it will be an unpleasant stay.

Reading the unfavorable reviews I made the decision to discount them as I had stayed here 23yrs ago and had a positive experience. Peig Butler is still the proprietor. Well, do not discount the unfavorable reviews, they are accurate based on our stay here. We too we scolded like children, bossed around and made to feel as if our very presence was a bother. It is obvious that Mrs Butler is quite stressed and that vibe permeates the entire place. From being told where you should sit, what you should eat, what time to get up or shouldn't get up. (I am an early riser and was scolded for same) it might be time for Mrs Butler to get out of the business as clearly she has lost her hospitable touch. It is a shame, I feel sorry that she is so tense, it is not healthy for her or her guests.

Like so many reviewers, I ignored the reviews because I wanted to stay someplace really cool. Unfortunately Peg and her son's rudeness tainted what could have been the best stay in Ireland. We were greeted by Peg's son who was not friendly and quite bossy. Like we were intruding into his home. We met Peg in the morning, not a very pleasant woman. Very opinionated to the point of being rude.
I come from a culture of speaking ones mind but there is a time and place; doing it with a customer is not the time or the place. Stay somewhere else if you want to be appreciated for the money you are spending at the establishment.

This was our third visit to Ireland and our only bad experience. We took a chance because of the good reviews and the chance to stay in a castle, which turned out to be a 200 year old prison. It was clean, though in need of repairs. Do not bring this or ANYTHING to the landlady's attention unless you want a verbal thrashing. She was argumentative and confrontational which made for a very quiet breakfast with all the quests. Bring cash, credit not accepted. Check in between 4 and 6. Breakfast at 8:30 sharp in your assigned seat. Our suggestion, if you wish to stay in a castle, look elsewhere...this is a prison.
