Detailed Reviews
How can it be? I've been hostelling world-wide for over 25 years now but I've never seen such a place. Yes, the location is great. Yes, it's a historical building... BUT... And this is a MAJOR "but"... It once upon a time was "gas lit" but now they're using butagaz stuff, depending on who's staying there and how much they care about safety... I'm sorry, but I narrowly escaped a fire at my own place only less than one month before (short circuit) and simply wanted to RUN AWAY. Windows recently seemed to (sort of) having been painted but means they don't open anymore. Fire alarms are out of order, toilets doors are broken, celling is collapsing (above the gas lamps) in the female toilets, etc. etc...The warden's place is a complete mess and we were charged 2 more euros per person for not having brought our own bed sheets, which wasn't, either, written on the website. I took pictures to send to the Irish Youth Hostels organization, it's a shame, really. I HATED the place.

We found this hostel from the TI office in Cahir and while it was cheaper than a B&B, it was the worst hostel we stayed in (and we stayed in quite a few during our budget trip to Ireland). We were forced to 'rent' bed sheets since we didn't bring our own (which we never had to do at any other hostel...assuming we are taking our hygiene into your own hands), and there were many areas (bathroom, bedroom, kitchen), where you could see cracks/holes that lead directly outside. You could even look under the doors and out the keyholes directly outside, which meant the frigid air had no problems coming in (very evident in the bathrooms, so there was no way we were showering that night). I believe the whole place is run on two coal stoves that charge a battery (electricity and all), so when the lights dimmed when we plugged in our laptop, we quickly realized that plugging in anything would probably be a bad idea if we wanted power by morning. It was tempting to sleep in the living room area since we had the whole place to ourselves (since it was MUCH warmer than any of the dorm rooms). The hostel is pretty far off the beaten track to a point where the isolation and the condition of the hostel made it quite eerie to stay in. The only redeemer factor was that the owners stayed and talked to us for a bit when we arrived, and were quite kind, but when they left to go home, we realized even they aren’t in viewing distance of the hostel which encouraged the feeling of ‘something bad could happen and no one know about it’ feeling. The lighting in the hostel was also very dim/poor so it contributed as well. For the condition of the hostel, I would have expected to pay much less. It would have been worth it to pay the extra cash for something nicer.
