Nestled in a picturesque setting, Eccles Hotel & Spa in Glengarriff earns praise for its charming atmosphere and attentive service, with many travelers enjoying the exceptional spa and comfortable rooms that boast lovely views. While the hotel's cleanliness and historical charm are highlights, some guests have raised concerns over the perceived value, citing overpriced rooms and meal costs.
Despite this, the hotel's old-world luxury and detailed attention contribute to its homely ambiance, although it's worth noting that a few travelers found the rooms outdated and the absence of a pool disappointing.

Detailed Reviews
From the moment we set foot in the hotel we were not really aware of what precautions were being taken for Covid 19 , apart from a small bottle of hand sanitiser on a desk facing the open front door.
Yes, as regards Dinner , reservations did seem to be managed so that everyone was well distanced from each other.
There was the usual plexiglass at reception but we saw many people conversing on several occasions away from this.
Our room was supposed to have a 'Forest View', ours turned out to have a very depressing view of a flat roof with discarded dead trees. I did bring this to the attention of the Receptionist who was surprised and assured me that she would tell 'somebody'.
We heard nothing more and as we were staying for just 1 night we didn't make a fuss to be moved.
Room was basic and in older part of hotel. It was all very clean but I don't know what extra was done in the circumstances.
We dined in the Lobby which was fine as it is spacious and has a certain charm with 2 fireplaces.
We enjoyed our dinner , but found the wine expensive.
We assumed breakfast would also be in the Lobby as when we came down , 2 couples were already seated. Reception was busy and nobody was around to ask should we be seated.
Eventually a waitress came out to clear 1 table and was ignoring us . I asked could we sit at the table she was clearing, and she said that would be fine. She came to the table with place settings and some kind of spray to clean the table . The way the table was cleaned was not to our liking. Crumbs still remained and it really was not sanitised properly.
I got the Hand Sanitiser and a napkin and wiped it all down.
Sad that this had to be done.
Another waitress arrived who seemed more confident and friendly, and asked us if we wanted to go to the Dining room. We said we were happy to stay where we were and get on with breakfast.
Would say that the cooked part of our breakfast had to be cooked at 7 am.
Our designated time to eat was 10;30am.
Our dog did well that day.
What I assume was the Assistant manager came and I complained about the fact w edit not have any idea as to where to go for breakfast, and that I had to sanitise the table myself.
He assured me that the plan for breakfast would be pointed out on check in.
Just seeing how the table had been cleaned did not strike up any confidence in how everything was being sanitised after each guest.
Only cleaning staff and waiter serving dinner wore masks.
I was completely surprised by this and as it was our very first outing to eat and have an overnight stay. We will be slow to venture out again and will not be heading towards the Eccles.

Regular visitor travelling solo this time and I had a single room which was small but very clean with lots of new comfy extras like throw pillows and towels in a picnic basket. I'm not sure how other adults access the tiny shower room that's been carved into the corner of an already minuscule bedroom but the only way I could do so was to straddle the toilet to be able to open and close the bathroom door. There are signs dotted around the hotel asking you to be patient with them as a refurbishment takes place - I didn't see any works going on during my stay but hope that the bathroom door situation may improve for the next guest. The wifi had no signal in my room for the entirety of my trip which was a significant issue as I had some work to do which could only be done sitting in the reception area with no privacy. The staff were sympathetic but couldn't assist me with it at all.
In contrast with my last visit the food was lovely and the waiting staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the dining and wine menus. Due to covid I ate there for most meals during my stay and these were all great, although it was a bit unwelcoming that the solo diners are squeezed in random parts of the restaurant with the nice views only reserved for those dining in groups. There's really no need for it with a bit of forethought arranging the tables.
Ultimately for me with the Eccles you're paying for the reputation as opposed to quality, and if shabby chic old world style is your thing then you'll not be disappointed. For me it never quite meets the quality I'd tend to expect from even less well-regarded hotels, so it's never my first choice for Glengarriff. Top marks for food this time around though.

For Mom's birthday I booked a night for the two of us in this hotel that I had only ever heard of, & on telling people where we were going, I got incessant positive gushings.
It is a beautiful, real old-style establishment. It all compliments and fits in so neatly that you couldn't but be seduced soon as you walk up the steps out front, with perfect furniture and fittings in every corner.
Our room was on the first floor, and one warning that I had gotten was with regard to accessibility. My Mother is fine, but there are a lot of steps and bends, so if you were to have a mobility issue, it is something to make clear at your time of booking.
I paid for a seaview, which I would regard as worth that bit extra. We were looking out onto the harbour, even from our bathroom, which also had a fine big window. The place was lovely and bright, but one criticism that features in reviews a bit is the size of the rooms: it didn't bother us, but being an old hotel, it is a factor. The bathroom is lovely, a fine shower with fine towels and top quality toiletries.
The constant in all the praise that I heard in the run-up was with regard to the food: dinner featured as part of my deal, and it is incredible. I went with the monkfish, and it was one of the finest meals that I have ever had. The desert was fabulous also, and I feared that the chair might give way under me by the time I'd finished!
After eating, we were brought out to the reception area to have a few drinks - these things all being choreographed because of social distancing. We were seated beside the fireplace, which was most pleasant.
Breakfast too was a beautiful meal, from the fruit to the croissants.
The staff are brilliant, all so helpful and friendly, and they did the ultimate to make the current necessities of facemasks and sanitisers fade from being an obvious that you'd register automatically.
The location is great, the water across the road, with one of the Garinish Island ferry services, and the village centre is only a hundred metres away.
Being a Saturday night in August, it wasn't cheap, but it was exceptional and well worth it!

We had a lovely 2 nights here. The bedroom had a beautiful view of the sea, the beds comfy, and the shower was one of the best we have ever used. I want to replicate it at home!
We didn't eat in the restaurant, we went to Caseys on the main street which was lovely, but breakfast was great and there was a fantastic choice despite the lack of buffet due to covid restrictions.
We were the first people to stay post lockdown so the whole place was spotless and we felt very safe staying in a hotel. My only gripe would be the appalling wifi connection. It was too weak to watch anything on our laptop so download before you go! Otherwise a perfect mini break in West Cork.

After months and months of isolation, we finally managed to escape to the Eccles Hotel set in a beautiful location overlooking the Bantry Bay
We spent 2 nights here in a warm and welcoming room with fabulous views of the bay. The room was classy. Very cosy and clean surf warm trendy colours, yet preserving the history.
We ate the most fabulous breakfast and dinner at the hotel on both nights in a safe covid setting.
The food was amazing, as good as any Michelin Star restaurant that we’ve experienced before. The scallops and array of taste sensations beside them were fabulous! It was art and science on a plate. My husband is still talking about the fillet steak! The homemade Irish soda bread that accompanied breakfast was soo good.
From the minute we arrived until we checked out, the staff were warm friendly and so obliging, especially reception. Our table waiter Patrick was so professional, as was the Barman Adrian, who was great craic and the cocktail 🍹 expert.
Can’t wait to return when the lockdown ends.

Friendly throughout. Warm tone set by Sandra when we made our booking. We stayed for two nights recently and had dinner on the first night in the restaurant which has an absolutely stunning view. The amuse bouche, scallops, steaks, fruit tart and lemon posset were wonderful-well done to the kitchen team. The service was fantastic. Lovely male trainee manager served us in the restaurant that night (sorry I’ve forgotten the name). Cosy fires lighting in the lobby and all the relevant covid precautions were clearly being taken. Our room looked out on lots of trees and lying in bed was really relaxing to look at all the greenery and clearly lots of produce is homegrown as you can see the gardens at the back full of vegetables and flowers. Stunning organic VOYA toiletries in the bathroom and great shower pressure.
Breakfast was excellent both mornings. Lovely service again. Housekeeping staff were really friendly every time we passed them. The location is great-a short stroll into lovely Glengarriff village and we drove to Bantry and Gougane Barra which only took a few minutes. We didn’t use the spa but next time we will. Highly recommend this hotel and would most definitely visit again.

Myself and my fiance just stayed in The Eccles for one night and it was outstanding from start to finish. All the staff we met were very helpful and friendly. The food was amazing both for breakfast and dinner. Our room was beautiful with a Seaview and the most comfortable bed ever! Only a short walk to the town where there is lots of restaurants, pubs qand shops. We also got the ferry over to garnish Island which was breath taking and the ferry pick up point was just across the road from hotel. The hotel took covid very seriously with hand sanitisers dotted throughout the hotel and all staff wore masks. We felt very safe and will 100% be back again. Thanks to all the team for a great stay! From one hotelier to another - ye are doing an amazing job!

A truly disappointing stay especially since it was the first stop on our honeymoon. I was expecting a small room due to reading previous reviews and being aware of the historic nature of the building but still, it was a massive come down from the far superior 3 star hotel we just got married in. It was a "forest view" room which is a bit of an ambitious title considering the view is primarily of roofs. Upon looking out at the view we were greeted with a squashed wasp and other marks on the window. The room wasn't particularly clean with plenty of dust, a tea stain and a grubby kettle that looked like it was a decade old. If you didn't knock yourself out while walking around the room with the sloping roof you could always knock yourself out in the bath where a bath mat wasn't even provided. First hotel I've ever been in that doesn't have this most basic item in the room.
The breakfast was an incredibly slow affair so expect to be there for over an hour. This was the experience on both mornings. On one of the mornings it seemed we were forgotten about after being seated and we were not alone on this as the table next to us had to also remind a server that their order hadn't been taken. There was nothing that stood out about the breakfast in comparison to other hotels except for the waffles which were very good. Overall though considering how tasteless the bacon was for breakfast, which I didn't think was possible in an Irish hotel, and how slow the service was, it left us with no intention to dine there later for dinner which is seemingly the highlight of other peoples' stay.
It seems you are mostly forgotten about when you're on the 4th floor like we were as you can be gone for the whole day and your water bottle left outside the door since morning will not be replenished. Chances are the elevator will not be working either when you're there so enjoy the exercise on the stairs.
We also availed of massages when we were there and I got to use the relaxation room for a while which is a nice place to relax overlooking the bay. Apparently due to covid they limit the hot tub usage to only 25 minutes of use which really isn't enough time to properly relax and enjoy it. So on any aspect of our stay here we never felt like we were getting what we paid for. This place is riding on its reputation and I would have preferred to pay my money to a place that actually lives up to it. Or to the countless 3 star hotels that are leaps and bounds ahead of this 4 star one.

We had initially had concerns about booking into this hotel as it didn’t impress on line for prices being charged. But after being given a recommendation and looking on line at the menus we thought this place was better than it looked given the fact the there seemed to be some thought given to the menus that were published on the web site. How wrong we were about the hotel, we should have listened to our first instincts. Ended up in the furthest room from reception, cold and uninviting and very small, with the smallest, wettest bathroom imaginable. Is this what we booked? Anyway, we had prepaid for dinner, discounted from €50 to €45, strange though there was no €50 menu just a cheaper al a carte menu with burgers, chicken wings etc that if you ate the whole menu couldn’t add up to €50 in the 1st place. The online menus were no longer available probably due to Covid. Anyway, we mentioned this to the manager who produced some other menu for people who complain and we ate that, nothing special, just a feed. For comparison sake, this is like some Victorian hotel in Bray that had its day in the 1920’s. I don’t think they had heaters in those days either!

Hi Carole. We do not have a swimming pool in the Eccles hotel however there are beautiful outdoor areas to swim should the weather be preferable - Blue Pool and Zetland Pier to mention two.
I hope this helps and we look forward to welcoming you.

No but the atlantic is just across the road..but a trip to garnish island is well worth it..boat just a few mins from eccles hotel
