The Bastion B&B - Award winning townhouse accommodation situated in the heart of Athlone's Left Bank area, close to the River Shannon and the 12th Century King Johns Castle. Surrounded by great restaurants and shops and just a stones throw from Seáns Bar - Ireland's Oldest Bar which is officially declared so in The Guiness Book of World Records! Consistently recommended!

Be very wary of making a booking online with them. It is outsourced to a company who appear to be based in Turkey and is faulty. The date i booked was changed to the date i made the booking on. I clearly clicked a different date and booked it. Only to find it had been changed. I got a text from owner with details of how to get into property but text did not include details of stay. So be careful of making a booking online as owners will tell you it is your fault.

This is the place to stay in Athlone! Location is perfect, just around the corner from Athlone Castle and Sean’s Bar and a 10-15 min walk from the train station. Anthony and Vinny were great hosts, available for questions when needed, but also offer self check-in which is incredibly convenient. The loft room (and the B&B in general) has so much character, which is what makes it a wonderful alternative to a standard hotel. The room was incredibly clean and inviting and so spacious. I would absolutely without hesitation stay here again the next time I’m in Athlone.

Hard to be situated any better place. Anthony was super helpful and patient. Not only did he help me with my bags, but came right over to help me with an internet issue I was having with my computer. Not once did he make me feel like I was being a bother. If you are sensitive to noise, it might not be the best place for you, but if like me it doesn't bother you, keep the windows open and enjoy the nice breeze you get through the apartment. The only suggestion I have would be a microwave would be a great addition to the loft. Even so with it not having one, it is not a deal-breaker. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and your lovely town. Btw... for those debating on east or west bank options...it is an easy 10 walk to any of the east bank attractions.

This place has so much charm and is clearly a labor of love judging by the collection of eclectic decor and how clean everything is kept. I was made to feel very at home by Anthony which was such a relief after spending a few nights at bargain hostels in Galway prior to my stay in Athlone. I was very happy with my comfortable bed, bright room, and strong space heater. Anthony was even nice enough to offer to keep my company at Sean's Bar when I wanted to go (I was traveling alone). I went for one beer and a t-shirt and didn't end up staying so I didn't take him up on the offer, but it had been very kind of him. The location of the place is perfect, too. The cafe across the street is a great lunch spot with decent prices, and the Italian place a few doors down form the B&B does an absolutely amazing carbonara. There were too many options in the area for me to try them all for my short stay, but I know there is an Indian and a Thai place for a little variety—all within easy walking distance. The nearest grocery store I found was the Tesco about a 15 minute walk away. I wasn't in Athlone for long and would love to visit again whenever I get around to traveling to Ireland again, and I would definitely book here again.…

We are so happy to have found this place. It's a gem! So artfully decorated, very clean, and comfortable. Breakfast is a help-yourself arrangement with lots of fresh fruit and simple biscuits and muffins, as well as ground espresso for making your own French press coffee. The staff are welcoming and interesting to talk with. And don't forget to visit the gift shop next door and the cafe across the street. Both are wonderful, as is this B&B.

Pleasant room but a little tight with respect to space. Room was clean with decent lighting. Kitchen was nice to have a cup of tea/coffee and sit around. No breakfast provided but there is a decent spot across the street. Centrally located. Street parking close to the property.

The room was fine, and I especially liked the guest kitchen for boiling a kettle, and having a fridge available for milk, fruit etc. The hosts were extremely helpful with recommendations and tips for the area. I would definitely stay here again. And the Bastion Kitchen has great food!

We visited Athlone just to get a way to visit Clonmacnoise. I was being a bit naive about travelling by bikes, but Donald And Vinny were super helpful. They helped with the bikes, let us leave our stuff there, told us about alternative route (the Pilgrim Road) etc. I was not a big fan of bed with just one blanket, but other than that it was amazing.
