Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We arrived during a rain storm. Within minutes Catherine made us welcome, set up wi-fi links for email and settled us in. This house is a family home and you are made to feel part of the family right from the start. Everything is provided to a very high standard from bedrooms to breakfast. Good company, good food, what else would you need to enjoy a break in the Irish countryside?

Wow, the drive up to Ballaghtobin. Absolutely gorgeous. The exterior and interior of the house lived up to all expectations and more. Our family group consisted of three generations ranging from 86yrs to 12yrs.We were greeted very warmly by Catherine, whom informed us of all the amenities available and showed us to our rooms which are a delight. Catherine was very obliging when we adjusted our travel plans to include another family member last minute. We all commented on the very comfortable sleep we all had over the two nights of our stay. Breakfast was a veritable feast, with a wide choice catering to all tastes. The interior of the house is beautifully decorated and has lots of magnificent artworks. Thanks Catherine for making our stay so memorable.

We stayed here for one night while in visiting Kilkenny. The home is absolutely gorgeous and the host, Catherine was delightful. The home is situated in the country so the views are breathtaking!! The room she gave us was on the front of the house and was so very nice. The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was enormous with heated towel racks. Very luxurious! The breakfast in the morning was the most extensive breakfast spread we had ever seen! Gorgeous fresh fruit, croissants, many types of fresh loaves of bread, cereals, in addition to the traditional Irish breakfast. It was a lovely stay and we highly recommend it!!

I booked ballaghtobin because of your reviews. We were excited to be staying at such a beautiful home. This quickly changed when we were greeted very rudely by Catherine. She then took us to a small, dark room at the back of the house overlooking a concrete yard. There were no other visitors (now I know why!) yet she did not move us to a front room. We were not given any information on the house or grounds, and not shown there was a guest sitting room. When asked, we told her we would like breakfast 9-9:30, her curt response was we had to tell her exactly as she couldn't keep food out for that long. This was a very special trip for us, and we were totally unprepared to be treated so badly. We ate our breakfast, put the money for our room in the front hall and left, rather than bear any more of her haughty rudeness. There are so many other lovely places to stay with welcoming gracious hosts (Bantry house, Glen Country, Gaultier lodge, Tahilla cove) I would never recommend anyone stay here.

Only stayed one night, but have not stayed at such a well appointed guest house in Ireland before. Very impressive selection of amenities provided in the room. Breakfast was superb and cooked to order. Nice selection of fruit laid out, including those that don't have the letter "p". Good wi-fi connection and very friendly hostess. Well done Catherine!

Quite simply one of the nicest places we have ever stayed. Our friends were getting married in nearby Thomastown and we choose Ballaghtobin pretty much randomly and because we loved the web site - and it far exceeded any expectations - we did not want to leave and nearly couldn’t after the world class breakfast served up the following morning. Stay in the barrack room if you can it really is beautiful and so comfortable, Catherine could teach others a thing or three about how to host, I have rarely felt so comfortable in what is essentially someone else’s home, and we are long since looking for excuses to return

A wonderful manor house B&B. Excellent location for exploring Kilkenny, Cashel, Cahir and other villages throughout the region. Bountiful breakfasts, beautifully furnished rooms and a stunning property for walks and exploring. Catherine makes you feel at home once you walk through her door. A wonderful find!

My wife and I stayed for one night only - alas - and were bowled over by Ballaghtobin and the generous owner, Catherine Gabbett. The house is beautiful inside and out, and the fittings would grace many a five-star hotel. Very highly recommended.

We stayed at Ballaghtobin in October 2005, and had a most pleasant stay! It was very convenient to the Kells area with all of its interesting ruins, and was also convenient to Kilkenny. The home was lovely, and the hostess was so gracious. We felt very welcomed and at home. We only stayed for 2 days, but commented over and over that this would be a wonderful place to home-base and stay for much longer.

It was quiet, in a beautiful setting, and we were free to stroll the long driveway and grounds. We had a fantastic breakfast both days, with fresh fruit, the best Greek yogurt, and great croissants and sausages.

The room was incredible - spacious and so nicely decorated. Our quarters were actually 3 rooms, the bedroom which had additional seating and a tv, a small living room with couch, loads of reading materials, magazines, and a tea tray with chocolates, and a large bathroom. There was not one detail overlooked in this place! If we are ever in the area again, we would love to stay here! Superb!

Been to Ireland 41 times and have never seen a lovelier house at any price. It's off the noisy routes in the middle of the country making it a great location whether travelling north to south or east to west. Close to Kilkenny, some of Ireland's best potters and glass specialists and Mount Juliet for the best riding and golf. This house looks like a British Home and Garden spread; absolutely breathtaking and lavish in its comfort and ease. And, best of the best, extremely reasonable. The only downside is that they don't do dinner and you will need to perhaps eat in Kilkenny or in Callan. I cannot wait to bring some of my girlfriends there to hear the sharp intake of breath as they go through the front doors.
