I stayed eight days in the hostel on a recent break. The volunteers are fantastic, very accommodating. I much enjoyed the renovated rooms. The area is absolutely gorgeous with so many options: ocean with pier nearby for a dip, walk along the cliffs or follow a path towards the ocean, the donkey sanctuary and a selection of fabulous lakes within less then 30-40 minutes drive. Garnish Island and Glengarriff as well. Meditation is optional and I took part twice at 9 am, where the guidance was excellent. The view from the meditation room is amazing. Most of all I enjoyed the great atmosphere at the hostel and the interesting people I've met. Clean, well run--a place with a lot of soul.
I stayed in a bunk bed in a dorm. The dorm was about big enough for two doubles to fit comfortably but there are three bunks and two singles there. At least three of the beds are occupied by long term residents/volunteers who work there. One volunteer used up about 1/4 of the available floor space with her personal items (old glass jars, books etc) and also took over one window (only 2 in the room) with decorations all around it & on the wall, dream catcher & wind chime hanging from the window and personal photos , notes stuck all over the frame & personal Bric a brac all over the windowsill . This room was occupied by 8 people and that space is shared space - she needs her own room or to be told to share the space /remove her stuff. The top bunk is very close to the ceiling & the bunk beds don't got against the wall ( sloped attic ceiling) so you feel every move of the person sharing the bunk bed. Cute duvet covers & pillowcases all from ikea (surprising they shop there) Bathroom upstairs is lovely and new but it is shared between 8 in dorm, family room & private room. It's the size of a small house bathroom& has only 1 toilet & small sink - so if you are showering you are holding up people who want to pee/ use the sink. I think it's not adequate for the number of people staying . There is one toilet downstairs too beside the male dorm. The building is an old cottage and it's very small. The shared common area of kitchen/sittingroom is not large enough when it's full. If they moved the bunk beds & had less people it might work. As it's an old cottage it is dark indoors downstairs which is to be expected. The view outside is amazing and makes up for the accomodation. There is a shared fridge and cupboard space you can use. There are some rules as this is on a meditation centre- quiet time from 10:30 pm to 8 am & no smoking /alcohol so this is a good detox spot I would come back but stay in other Accom on the centre like the cottages , if you are thinking of volunteering I'd say this is a good choice! Beautiful Lovely walks all around the centre , amazing views everywhere . Dzogchen beara is fabulous and I'd give the centre five stars this review is just for people planning to stay at the hostel so they know what to expect ! …
