Detailed Reviews

We held our wedding in the West Cork Hotel at the start of October. Living in West Cork, we were keen to hold our wedding locally so we would be able to frequently visit our wedding venue in years to come. With an abundance of venues to choose from in the area, WCH stood out to us for a number of reasons.
1. The staff are super and go above and beyond, while also having the craic!
2. The location is 10/10 with town center around the corner for salons (avoiding call out charges) and last minute forgotten bits and pieces.
3. Food is sourced locally from world class producers.
4. Photo locations on the door step with different angles of the river, Skibbs old buildings and many options in town. If you want, you can get them all done in 30min without having to step in a car and spend more time with your guests.
5. The snug was lovely for night before drinks and nibbles with early arrivals.
6. Fully wheelchair accessible (an imperative for us).
7. You can host your ceremony in Daly's Storehouse, drinks reception in different area, dinner and dancing in the ballroom. This allows you to have your full day on site, but move to a different room for each part of your day. If the weather is fine (it was grey and lightly raining on our day) you have the option of river side or old train bridge for drinks.
8. Farmer's Market on the Saturday, history museums and many beaches/coves/forest walks nearby means this a great place for guests to visit, making this a fantastic destination venue.
9. The decor is traditional, it is 100+ years old after all. But this only added to the occasion for us and meant we were able to be part of the history of this beautiful venue that has hosted so many West Cork weddings in the past.
10. The Olympic Suite was perfect for the bride to get ready in with great lighting, lovely view of the river and a separate seating area for bags etc.
This is a 3 star hotel that punches well above its weight.

We enjoyed a good 2 day break via Pigsback which offered excellent value for 2 nights B&B +one 2 course dinner.
The room was "inner courtyard view" which I expected because it was a special deal. (if you were expecting a river view it would have been disappointing). Check in was efficient and friendly.
The room was spacious and well appointed. Good bathroom with strong overbath shower and underfloor heating. The extractor was not working but I'm sure it will be fixed. It always surprises me how often extractors are not working in hotels and why don't housekeeping ask cleaners to check.
The bedroom was cold on arrival at 4.15pm but the heating was switched on after a call to reception.
Bed was very comfortable.
Our dinner in the bar was tasty and hot without being outstanding.
Breakfast was excellent with lots of choice in the light and airy restaurant.
Lots of parking spaces available in the car park.

Spacious Riverside Room in charming Irish town. The room was clean and spacious and the breakfast in the dining room was a delight. The staff is tremendously helpful and friendly. The hotel is across the street from the Skibbereen Heritage Centre, which is a must-see for all Irish history buffs. The hotel beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms have both a shower and HUGE bathtub. Very very nice old hotel with updated amenities.

For us a visit to the West Cork Hotel is like coming home. It was great to see all the familiar faces and receive such a warm welcome after what must have been a difficult 18 months for all concerned. The staff are real jewels, friendly, efficient with attention to detail. In terms of Covid 19 practices, all staff wore face masks and there was plenty of hand sanitizing stations around the hotel. A one way system of entry for the bar was in operation.
Our room met all our needs; comfortable bed, two sockets at each bedside locker, good reading lighting, plenty of large bath towels with lots of hot water and everything was in working order.
Covid 19 practices don't impact on your enjoyment of your stay, which is what you want from a holiday.
Our room was refreshed by housekeeping on a daily basis. Breakfast has moved to the large ballroom so no having to book slots and times, you can come when it suits between the hours of 8 and 11 which is more than generous and the cooked breakfast will set you up for the day.
Since our last visit the " bridge" has been adapted to provide a sheltered outdoor dining space which gives added comfort and supports those who want to eat outdoors. The food and beverage choices are extensive and offer great value for money. It's refreshing to find a hotel who values repeat business and it not out to fleece it's customers. A very much appreciated 12 O'Clock check out brings our 3 day visit to a conclusion, sad to be leaving, happy with our stay and looking forward to our return visit already. Skibbereen is a lovely town, lots of lovrly shops and eateries by day, an excellent base to explore the surrounding area.

A first class experience from start to finish, good quality food served by very attentive friendly staff. In fact the staff really add to the experience of staying at The West Cork Hotel, nothing is too much trouble. Plenty of thought put in to try to make the premises COVID safe. Function Room used to serve Breakfast tables with good social distancing, separate entrance and exit to the bar, hand sanitizers place along the corridors. We really enjoyed our 2 night stay and will return for another stay.

My wife and I stayed in this hotel for six nights at the beginning of October using it as a base to explore the delights of West Cork and it turned out to be an inspired choice. The location in Skibbereen is perfect as while on the edge of town all local facilities are within a few minutes walk and access to the A71 which is the main route to Clonakilty and Bantry in the opposite direction is moments away.
Many reviews concentrate on the staff and they are well deserved as the entire team were welcoming and friendly and extremely efficient and in our case we could not but mention Sheila who was an excellent hostess at breakfast time and her awareness and years of experience meant we wanted for nothing.
The breakfast was first class as was indeed the evening dinner which we had on two nights of our stay with the Monkfish notable as it was delicious.
Our room was spacious and comfortable with lots of light from the large window which overlooked the riven Ilen and marshes beyond which attracted a range of wild bird species.
Skibbereen is a vibrant town and perfectly placed for visiting all the attractions and scenery of beautiful west cork and from our base we easily visited Mizen Head, Dursey Island via Cable car, Inchydoney Beach, Garinish Island at Glengarriff plus Bantry and even made it to Kenmare one evening.

We have travelled the world staying in numerous hotels of differing quality but have to say this was one of the most disappointing. We did have high expectations reading reviews prior to booking. However on arrival we were given an outdated grubby room probably not been touched since the 1950s. The curtains smelt musty, the beds were soft. Cobwebs hung from the light shade and the standard lamp was stained. The wet room had a broken toilet seat and tap and was of a generally grubby appearance. We booked a table in the restaurant prior to arrival but we’re not informed there was a wedding taking place so we had to eat in the bar where service lacked - most probably due to the wedding. Maybe we were just unlucky.

Had booked this hotel for 2 nites back in February, from the pictures and review I thought we had picked a nice hotel. I did get a phone call 2 days before requesting full payment which I found unusual & unsettling but I didn’t mind if the hotel was ok. On arrival the hotel looked nice lobby was nice & inviting & the girl at reception was pleasant. We had been travelling around west cork all day so all we wanted was a nice shower & comfortable room. We are not people that
complain but our room was dated which I would have got over, but it was filthy the sheets had hairs and dust all over the bed, bathroom also had hairs along with a rim of filth around the outside of the toilet bowel. We complained at reception ask for an alternative room but no luck so the manager on duty came up the inspect the room fair enough she got it half cleaned toilet was still filthy so cleaned it myself. We got a drink on the house while we waited. Went for dinner as it was a package unfortunately my husbands wings were half cold & fish was under cooked we didn’t complain as we were sick of everything at this stage. Unfortunately our night was cut short as my husband was very unwell after the meal. The best part of the hotel was the breakfast! Felt like we had been done really just wanted to leave after the first night but money had taken before we arrived to the hotel. Can’t understand how people gave this hotel such good reviews we obviously got one of the worst room on the first floor. This really put a dampener on
our break away. So disappointing as we had not been away together all year & had worked all through the pandemic. As you
might have guessed we won’t be returning to the west cork hotel.

We have stayed in this hotel on a number of occasions and just back from another lovely stay. It is not overly fancy but is extremely comfortable and much better than lots of hotels with higher star rating. It is definitely the staff that make this hotel great and leave you wanting to keep coming back.
We had booked a room with balcony which was very spacious and comfortable. Great shower in bathroom- with toiletries provided. Tea and coffee making facilities, hair dryer, fan, iron and ironing board, flat screen tv. The couple with us had a suite which had lovely river views, a separate sitting room area with fridge, coffee machine and a second tv. They had spacious bathroom with walk in shower and separate bath.
Hotel bar is lovely- Joan (and her sister Gretta) and all the bar staff very efficient, friendly and helpful. All staff were great- nothing was too much trouble. Reception staff very welcoming. Sheila at breakfast very pleasant each morning Breakfast was very good- fresh fruit, cereals, granola/yogurt, juices, cakes, pastries, scones, croissants, ham, cheese. Tea and coffee brought to the table together with choice from menu- which included full/half irish, vegetarian irish, eggs benedict, french toast with bacon, french toast with bananas, kippers.
We had dinner one evening- steaks cooked as ordered and the prawn starter very good. Nice choice of desserts which included- mint aero cheesecake, apple crumble, tiramisu, ice cream, eclair.
Plenty parking behind hotel- narrow lane to access it.
We watched the all ireland hurling final in the hotels adjoining building which was spacious, lots of seating with a bar and big screen. Great atmosphere there.
Hotel foyer is bright with plenty seating areas. We are booked again for later in the year.

I will be sure to share your remarks with our Kitchen team who work incredibly hard to offer the best service to all our guests. Thank you again for your lovely feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back to The West Cork Hotel later this year. Kind Regards, Aidan Derwin Front Office Manager
