The setting of Glaneam house was unreal but the overall vibe of the hospitality was a bit meh. When we first arrived we were shown to our room but weren't told about where and when to have breakfast the next morning, any details about the room or nice places to visit on Valencia Island or anything. The next morning we luckily stumbled on the breakfast room (which was fab in the end) and fellow guests gave us some recommendations on what to do nearby. Possibly the worst bit was when Meta who met us at the door when we were leaving asked me if I was pregnant (I am not and have never been asked this before) to which I replied "hahahah no" and she answered "Too much food then" and jabbed at my belly, which put me in a right mood for the rest of the day and made me extremely sensitive and paranoid for the rest of the trip. It became a running joke between myself and my boyfriend whenever I got dressed I would ask "do I look pregnant now?". We "checked out" by just closing the door and heading off which, to be honest, we were glad about at that point. While everyone was (mostly) nice to us, I got the impression that they were only just tolerating people staying and would be delighted when we were all gone, which isn't a great atmosphere for guests to be in. For that reason, I wouldn't stay again or really recommend it to anyone else, despite it being a stunning location and house.

We had a recent two night stay at Glanleam House, It's run by a lovely family. The two children helped with serving the breakfast. Lots of toys around the house for children to play with and lovely pictures and signs painted by the children displayed throughout the house. Meta was always keen to give us plenty of information about her life and of the house itself. Disappointingly the gardens themselves seem very neglected and overgrown. The decor of the bedrooms are very 1980s and I think in need of some DIY jobs.

Driving down the narrow road to glanleam on a blisteringly hot afternoon we could tell we were arriving somewhere special. The surroundings are lush and wild flowers in full bloom. We stayed for 3 nights with our boisterous one year old and the lovely hosts were extremely accommodating. This place is perfect for anyone who likes to be close to nature. Plenty to explore including the surrounding beach, woods, fields and gardens. Delicious breakfast in front of the open fire each morning. We will be back. Thank you Jessica, Eoin and Meta.

Our family of 2 adults, 2 teenagers and Honey the golden retriever loved our 3 night stay at Glanleam. Our hosts were the most friendly, helpful and kind people you could wish to meet. Morning dips in the bay in front of the house were heavenly.

The 2 seaview rooms we occupied were extremely comfortable and breakfast was delicious.

A great base to explore Valentia island and luckily we had a good day for our boat trip to Skellig Michael - an absolute must see.

Sad to leave - planning our return already!!!

We spent a long weekend in Glanleam and loved the place. It is a big house but not overpowering so. Our seaview room was large, nicely furnished, very clean and comfortable, with enough space in the press for a month stay. The view from the window was stunning. The subtropical around the house is impressive and we enjoyed walking around, but one needs strong shoes. Some extraordinary plants there. Lovely beach which feels like a private one, I.swam every day. And a great walk.to the lighthouse through the fields and returning via the gardens...
One of the reasons for choosing Glanleam was that it was dog-friendly. And friendly it was, not a.place where your dog is just tolerated. He had great runs around the gardens and the beach, made friends with the local retriever and there were even dog towels provided for.him coming back from the errands. There were also beach towels for us.
The icing on the cake came after breakfast just before our departure. When we had our breakfast a mare gave birth to a foal. So we had a privilege to see a 2 hours old foal trying to stand up and making his first steps.
Lovely place, lovely hosts and their children. And we liked their dogs, horses, and other animals

Jess & Owen are wonderful hosts. Our family of 3 teenagers all loved this experience. Staying two nights, we loved the walks around the house, the gardens are wild and stunning, the little beach a joy to swim from, and an easy walk to town. We sat by the fire at night and enjoyed our books and in the morning were treated to a delicious cooked breakfast, also by the fire.

We have just spent a week in the glanleam boathouse. Absolutely idyllic, out of this world location. The boathouse is beautiful and comfortable and has everything a family would need. The unspoilt beach on the doorstep is fantastic, spotlessly clean with the clearest of sea waters!
A 1.5 mile walk and you are at Knightstown with a beautiful harbour, great for fishing and pier jumping if the kids are in to that.
Highly recommend!

Spent 3 nights at Glanleam and it was one of the loveliest places I've ever stayed. Kerry in the sun is hard to beat anyway but Glanleam was a real treat. Amazing views, beautiful beach just beside, we didn't get to the gardens or down to the lighthouse but were there before and they were lovely too. The old house is so charming and authentic but its the family that make it so special. We received such a warm welcome and were really well taken care of. Huge and comfortable bedroom, beakfast was amazing, and we had lots of lovely chats with Meta, Jessica, Eoin and they're two two super helpers Gemma and Ben. Thanks to all and we hope to see you all again soon.

One cannot even walk at ease in this location,I was charged €6 to cross this ladies land via the cliffs to access the lighthouse,I had a small dog on a lead and was attacked by two dogs who were as ill mannered and as vicious as their German owner, pretty disgusting considering it is supposed to be a local tourist attaction and a huge let down for the local community. This was worse than terrible !!!!!!!!!!

Avoid at all costs. Whilst on Valentia island for a day trip we decided to visit Glanleam house and gardens as my mother is a keen gardener. The main gates were open and the ticket office unmanned so we continued up the lane to the main house where a watchful dog alerted the owner to our presence. We were presented with a photocopy of a hand drawn map, given general directions and charged €6.00 each (no senior citizen rate). No on-site information, no tickets, no receipts. Very quickly the error of our ways became apparent as we started to explore the ‘grounds’ hoping to find some walled or landscaped areas. What we found was an over grown, ill kept poorly signed mess. The toilets were just about fit for purpose, the foot paths crumbling and covered in moss and the ‘gardens’ over grown and unkempt. Yes, we did see some sub-tropical fauna and yes we understand that this is an old 19th century ‘working farm’ green house, but decided that it wasn’t worth dragging my elderly mother around on poor foot paths for hours. This may be a botanist’s idea of fun but it is certainly not for the average tourist / gardener. We were back at the car within 15 minutes and felt pretty much ripped off after spending €12. My mother approached the owner to return the ‘map’ and offer some feedback (if a refund, partial or not, was forthcoming that would have been welcome). What we did get was a tirade of abuse.....’what did we expect’...’we were unbelievable’ .....etc. As we drove out of the grounds I could still see the ‘lady’ shouting in my rear view mirror.
Later that trip we visited Muckross house in Killarney, enjoyed free parking, beautiful grounds and immaculate gardens, tropical plants in a Victorian green house and lovely restaurant and facilities with friendly staff. Cost...€0. If sub-tropical plants are your thing you can also visit Garnish Island in the harbour of Glengarriff in Bantry Bay.
Do not waste your time and money on Glanleam and its ignorant owner.
