Our package included a 3 course dinner each night and I'm happy to report that (and both of us agreed) each and every plate served up in the Carriages Restaurant was excellent. Really couldn't find fault with a single thing on any of the plates.
Meals can also be ordered without reservation across the yard in the Signal Bar but we didn't eat there and it's a different menu.
Breakfast was the usual standard you'll find in any hotel and obviously it's not a buffet anymore so ask whoever is serving you for exactly what you do or don't want on your Full Irish. Plenty of healthier options available too.
Anybody worried about how this hotel is implementing Covid regulations can relax as well. Everything I witnessed was beyond what I've seen in most other places but was all done as if it was just normal, everyday routine. Unfortunately, this also means that the 2 bars close at 11pm but that's the current law - just be aware of that in case you think it's like the old style residents bar 'til 2 or 3 in three morning.
So, well done and thank you to ALL the staff for making it a really pleasant stay for us in these strange times. Looking forward to going back already.
I first stayed here approx 20 years ago when it first opened it was nice then , but i do feel it lost its way along the line , but over the past five years with a new GM in Anne Marie it transformed back to its former glory , then a few years back James Sweeny became GM and its improved yet again , you often see James mucking in with the staff , waiting meals , pulling pints and even help clean the rooms so he has a great rapour with his very helpful staff . The rooms are very comfortable, and the Hotel Restaurant serves meals that are top class and rival, if not beat some of the better restaurants in Clifden , The main bar during non covid times is often rocking and you can get meals there also, the hotel is also very central to the town . I can highly recommend the CSH , But please don't book the weeks and room i want ! Only joking
Pool was great & the town is lovely.
Special mention to Aine- you have natural people skills that cannot be taught or bought well done & James who seemed to be everywhere working non stop.
Pros
Lovely food
Exceptional staff working very hard
Great location
Family oriented & very safe
Good kids club
Cons
No air con
Not so comfortable beds
Flying ants in outdoor areas
Would highly recommend, the hotel & it’s staff does not deserve to be brought into this mess made by the IHF & so called responsible government officials.
All Covid rules are being adhered to and hand sanitiser was readily available.
My wife and I, along with out 18 month old stayed on one of the Self-Catering apartments adjacent to the hotel. In the run up to our break and given the COVID 19 situation I had some concerns about travelling as we had not been away during the pandemic. I emailed the hotel outlining my worries and asked for some pretty specific re-assurances. My mail was dealt with directly by the Manager, James Sweeny.
James went above and beyond in answering my queries. He provided a raft of information and advice on each of my points. This re-assured me no end.
When we booked in we received a fantastic welcome and within minutes we were settled in to our accommodation. The accommodation was spotless and we could sense that every possible effort was made to make the apartment welcoming and safe – right down to the homemade brown bread and marmalade.
James even took the time to personally pay us a visit. He was genuine in his concern that everything was perfect for us and was very forthcoming in offering his personal attention should we need anything.
This was a level of service and customer care greater than would have expected. It went a long way toward ensuring we could fully relax and enjoy our time in Clifden. From checking in, using the Leisure Center, lunch in the bar and breakfast the next day every interaction was warm and professional.
The WiFi was very satisfactory and my room has plenty of space to work comfortably with numerous plugs.
The gym and swimming pool were surprisingly excellent. There were plenty of cardio machines, free weights, weight machines and a separate studio downstairs for floor work etc. The gym staff were pleasant and helpful. The motivation mottos on the TV in the cardio studio were a lovely touch.
I really enjoyed breakfast each morning. There was a varied selection laid out in buffet style. A tip is to ask for a latte, cappuccino or americano coffee if you love your coffee as the pot of coffee was not awfully hot or strong. All the usual hotel breakfast offerings were available - good range of cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurt, bread, pastries, juices and hot food. I really loved the sausages and black pudding. It would be good to see some bran based cereals like bran flakes or All Bran and also some low fat or no fat yoghurt options.
I’ll be back again soon!
After a complaint, the receptionist moved us to a room commensurate with our booking and situation.
This fundamental mistake alone would earn the hotel 1 star in this review.
However, thanks to a prompt correction of their mistake, a nice breakfast service and a friendly manager lady in the main restaurant, the hotel earns another star. The food in the hotel restaurants is otherwise mediocre and overpriced, the pub having slightly better cooked food than the main restaurant.
The best thing around the hotel is however the bistro restaurant Steam just outside, with excellently cooked and seasoned wraps, salads and sandwiches plus great coffee. Unfortunately they don't serve dinner.
"January is a very quiet time in Connemara with many places closed. However, this also makes it a lovely time to visit."Read full review
