A most enjoyable stay! Warm hospitality begins with a champagne reception and an entertaining and amusing presentation. In the best tradition of Irish storytelling Brian’s account of the history of the building and the town of Clifden was sprinkled with good humour and a wry smile. Features excellent dining, friendly accommodating service, in a comfortable clean environment . Attention to detail and an effort to know guests personally made the experience good one.
The hotel is like a comfortable old chair. The staff are welcoming so curling up with a book or a drink by the fireplace feels homey. Breakfast and dinner were surprisingly well prepared , tasty and varied. The building and grounds present a beautiful picture. Although up hill, it is possible to walk back from dinner or the pubs in Clifden. It is centered to take advantage of all the wonders of Connemara.
We went there for a very special trip down memory lane, and I must say it was as excellent as ever. Brian Hughes is a very unique and vibrant hotel manger and full of what Irish hospitality is all about. Its a breath of fresh air to see his passion for his hotel and attention to each and every guest after all these years. Its tough work and lots of people forget how hard it actually can be. The food was just outstanding and the views are perfect. We had such a wonderful time together as a family and we will be back much sooner this time. Continued success to you all in Abbeyglen.
Sent my parents here for their 50th wedding anniversary and they couldn't have been treated better. Given the best room in the hotel, absolutely amazing, and well looked after all weekend by the staff. Food great as well. Highly recommended.
Paddy and I were blown away by the incredible food we enjoyed last Saturday night. Seated at an open window with a glorious view, we enjoyed oysters, squid and lobsters in mouthwatering sauces. All washed down with a delicious crisp white wine. Our host Ronan somehow succeeded in making us feel like we were the only guests in the room, while attending to dozens of others in the restaurant at the same time. A terrific evening all round, cannot recommend Abbyglen Castle enough, we will back again! Julie & Paddy
Recommended by a friend we recently decided to do a few more staycations before the end of the summer. This was a real treat and surprisingly I had not heard of it. From the moment we arrived the staff couldn’t do enough for us. In particular the bar staff were so nice we ate there both nights. Great location near Cliften village, we are looking forward to returning now that we know this hideaway exists.
Hats off to the Hughes family who run this wonderful personable hotel …everyone here oozes personality and collectively they make the magic happen …the rooms are all stunning , food is magnificent ..the welcome reception complete with the history and story telling are both informative and funny …the beautiful town of Clifden is just around the corner …we’ll done folks
Of the four Castle/Hotels we stayed in, this one was the most like family. From our arrival where Ronan grabbed our bags to hurry us to our rooms so we wouldn’t missed the evening story and Prosecco to the delicious breakfasts and dinner and conversations with John at the bar we enjoyed every moment at Abbeyglen. They don’t use card keys, only skeleton keys, so cute. USB ports available in the room for charging phones etc. No air conditioning, but most of the time it isn’t needed. This Castle is older and not as fancy as some but what they may lack in modernness they make up for in personality and charm. Visit with them, you wont regret it.
Classic old building with a long, varied history. The restaurant food and service are outstanding and the staff are delightful. The grounds are beautiful with a short walk into Clifden. The highlight of the visit was a reception and witty history lesson with the owner/manager of the property, Brian Hughes. Brian is the consummate host. Even if you don’t like wine or don’t intend to order, read the comments for each of the wines on the wine list. I suspect Brian is the author and you will likely find the reading enjoyable.
From Roisin, Andrew, Paul & Sue we absolutely loved our stay at Abbetglen Castle, fabulous staff, lovely rooms a real castle with characters, and Brain got to the best hotel manager I've ever come across. Thank you from all of us.
