Celebrating 40 years of welcoming guests as friends, the Ardagh is now in the third generation of the Bauvet/Berings family. Old fashioned rest, relaxation & the best food Connemara has to offer. One of the last small, family run hotels in Ireland. What was originally a quaint fishing lodge is now the 20 bedrooms of a four star establishment. The Ardagh has been lovingly restored into an unfussy, intimate hotel with individually styled guest rooms. Set on 6 acres of food and wild floral gardens offering both views of Connemara’s land and seascapes.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.

Nestled in a picturesque setting, The Ardagh Hotel & Restaurant wins over guests with its scenic views and tranquil ambiance, not far from local attractions. The rooms, applauded for their comfort and cleanliness, occasionally draw comments on size and cost. The hotel's service is consistently lauded, with staff members noted for their warmth and professionalism.
Cleanliness is a standout feature, with spotless accommodations and pristine common areas. While the cozy atmosphere and amenities, including live music and dog-friendly policies, are highlights, opinions on value are divided, balancing plush offerings against the price point.

Detailed Reviews
Ardagh is a relatively small family run hotel in a lovely setting overlooking the water- room was compact but very clean and comfortable. Dinner and breakfast were both outstanding ... dinner was one of the best we have had - service excellent -we will be back for a longer stay the next time

We had a wonderful few days here and were able to bring our dog along too. It’s a perfect base for exploring Connemara and the west coast. We ate all our meals, apart from lunch, in the hotel. The food was top class. Staff were friendly and we felt safe in that the hotel were adhering to Covid restrictions and sanitising protocols. We paid for a sea view room and felt it was worth it for the view. We hope to return at some stage.

The staff and owner of this hotel are very friendly, without being intrusive. We felt very safe there with social distancing, sanitiser etc. The food is top notch, gorgeous location and great base for exploring connemara. We really enjoyed our stay there and will definitely return.

It is always disappointing when you go to a place that does not quite match its website and this is a perfect example. We were expecting this quirky, bright, "boutiquey" type of place with fabulous views...well, the hotel is dark, tired, the corridors leading to the rooms are dark, the lounges are tired, etc We were expecting one of those fab rooms advertised on their website (we booked and paid the price of a sea view), that was not really the case but the room was comfortable, modern, clean and so was the bathroom which is very important to us.
We booked a room with a view and this is what we got but be aware that these rooms actually overlook the car park, then the road, and then yes the views over the water behind the ESB cables, so needless to say it is impossible to take a nice picture from the hotel unless you photo shop it or take it from the other side of the road (which is extremely dangerous as no pavement and busy).
We were welcome by a really nice gentleman at reception who explained everything to us and took us up to our room with cakes to enjoy with coffee and that was a really nice touch (and the cakes were delicious). What I thought was unusual is that this gentleman was not wearing a mask and in this climate we almost felt uncomfortable having him showing us everything in the room. What we thought was very surprising, again in this climate, is that except 2 restaurant staff, no one was wearing a mask at the Ardagh (during our stay anyway)...we actually felt quite uncomfortable with breakfast as they still have a buffet when most hotels (from basic to luxurious establishments) have got rid of theirs.. There is a sign to sanitize your hands before helping yourself at the buffet but the hand sanitizing station is located out side the restaurant which does not make sense...
The quality of breakfast was average but the restaurant room was pleasant, bright with the nice views.
The highlight to us was dinner and it was absolutely delicious; the place was packed and even though it was hard to navigate between tables I think they did well with social distancing as it was respected considering the way customers were seated. But very nice food and I believe some non residents were also there having dinner which was a great thing. All the staff were lovely.
So overall yes we were disappointed and it is a pity as the place has a lot of potential and modernizing all the common areas would be a good idea.

This hotel is a disgrace ,charging 5* prices for what I can only describe as a very shabby b&b.The food was terribly overpriced and the staff not very helpful . I would never be back .The padded cell effect wallpaper in our room was horrible ,the paper actually peeling of the wall. The skirting boards were very dusty and to me the room had not been thoroughly cleaned . We stayed 1 night it cost us 265 euro ,the meal which was really a breast of chicken and a few veg was far too expensive. All 8n all it was a terrible experience

Friendly Staff who were knowledgeable about the area. Additionally they offered advise on the dinner menu at ease. The restaurant offered fine dining with a well balanced menu with something to suit everyone's palate. The location is scenic and the bar lounge is romantic especially at night with open fire to set the tone... Thank you to all at Ardagh Hotel that made our stay one to cherish for some time to come.

Hotel is spotless! We were nervous coming here , considering covid 19 but the room was very clean and carpet looked like it had been freshly shampooed. Food was amazing in restaurant, only thing was that I was hoping to see staff wearing gloves or some sort of face coverings but I could only trust that all staff , including catering staff were taking all covid 19 precautions. Loved the playlist in the bar, very relaxing... loved everything about this hotel, it’s a special hidden gem for anyone who is new to exploring areas outside of Galway city. I will be back with my husband , or maybe some of my girlfriends....😁

Stayed here for one night booked room on internet but on way down got email to say room over booked and prices had doubled As they only had upgraded rooms now available . Rang to complain that this was not our problem but theirs and Lo and behold after a few minutes our room was now available at original booking price! Hotel in beautiful location even though near Clifden need a car as road not suitable to walk or cycle as very narrow and twisted. Room facing vegetable garden was compact clean and comfortable shower room clean and lovely towels. We had dinner in restaurants two sittings we were the later sitting beautiful sunset views restaurant upstairs. Starters and main course fantastic dessert were the only disappointment. Downstairs afterwards to finish off with drinks in bar very spacious and airy. Breakfast again another treat! Great food and presentation. Will be back for food again. Overall a lovely experience.

On booking the staff confirmed the Hotel took one4all, having stayed two nights and went to pay 440 for two nights it turned out they couldnt take one4all. Main reason i booked was because they took it. The manager was unhelpful on this regard. On our second night we came back from doing activities around during the day to shower to head for dinner in town, the water wasn't working. When i called reception they said it would be back in ten minutes. It wasn't and when it did return it was dirty and black in color. We couldn't shower and having delayed our dinner reservation in town to wait for it to be rectified we gave up and had to go for dinner without showering. The breakfast was nice but this hotel is not worth 220 per night. I would recommend Clifden in general, amazing views and beaches.
