We checked out of a soulless scruffy supposed 5 star hotel after night one of our Cork trip and thankfully moved for 3 nights to beautiful Barnabrow House which is full of soul and is good for the soul.
As a friend said God tried to give us lemons but we made lemonade!
Geraldine has created a special, pretty and magical environment at Barnabrow House.
If Barnabrow was in the Mediterranean it would be the Mama Mia hotel but in the countryside .
A little hotel run as Geraldine’s dream and from her heart.
Her team are all lovely and cheery. We were warmly welcomed by Susan and then taken great care of by Jessica who made sure anything we needed was taken care of. We were spoiled.
Cristina and a lovely chap who was working on Sunday at Sunday Lunch ( so sorry we didn’t get your name) both also deserve a mention and Sunday lunch is lovely. We met Geraldine when she kindly came to check on us and she is a lovely lady. Very unassuming and warm.
The “oldy worldy” vibe at Barnabrow is very boho/shabby chic. The prettiness is everywhere.
Our room was spotless and had the most beautiful Victorian brass bed. The children’s room had a pretty four poster bed. There are products in the bathrooms from “The Hand Made Soap Company” which are natural products made in Ireland ( we first found them in Mount Juliet and they are beautiful natural products).
Flowers, birds, butterflies, bees donkees, hens, and MJ & Lily the Westies added to the magic. There is a fairy garden too. You can certainly feel Barnabrow is a place fairies would like to live!
Breakfast is yummy and the bruschetta, carrot cake & coffees at the tea rooms are fab.
The very sweet, pardon the pun, tea rooms are open 12 until 5.
Dinner service has not restarted yet since lockdown but we enjoyed dinner in Ballycotton one night and brought takeout back to the garden 2 sunny evenings as we were tired from our day trips so just wanted to relax in the lovely sunshine. The stars at night were a treat. To sit outside and stargaze was lovely .
Location was excellent to visit Garryvoe beach ( great ice creams ) , Ballycotton town where you can do a cliff walk, Fota Wild Life Park, the Titanic exhibition at Cobh.
If you are going down during good weather I’d pack fold up chairs for the beach and bucket and spades. Garryvoe is a lovely beach for families.
On our last day at Barnabrow we heard a couple visiting for lunch say to the staff
“ We married here so we wanted to revisit and it’s still like never never land”.
What a lovely analogy.
Well done Geraldine!

This was our second time back here to this special setting in East Cork , we got married here in 2019 . It truly is a magical place . The room was beautiful, spacious , comfortable room no 3 family room , however the only thing was there is no blind on the bay window in this room which light comes into the room early in the morning, and just change of bed sheets for the second night & empty bins. But overall the room was beautiful . The breakfast was simply beautiful and so tasty even our two year old loved all the fresh & healthy choices, beautiful breads , fruits and stunning fresh yogurt this was just delicious along with hot food choices I got pancakes yum , and the coffee brewed to perfection. Everything is organic here just quality. Again we were greeted by the donkeys on site and the hillarious kid goats which were lots of fun . To be honest it was like being out in Spain vibe for two days . It has to be said it's the perfect location to where you want to travel , very close to ballycotton , cobh , fota , Middleton east cork etc . This place does create memory's and always leave a smile on the face. Another thing I believe this is value for money !!!!!!!!!!

We stayed in lovely Barnabrow House in July just after lifting of Covid restrictions. Close to Ballycotton village and harbour - only 12 mins away by car. We brought bikes for local cycling.
Bed and breakfast only - no restaurant yet. We were warmly welcomed and brought to a wonderful large and comfortable bedroom with large bright bathroom in the original main house. The bed was very comfortable and it was beautifully quiet at night. An attractive fresh breakfast is served to the table in the morning.
Barnabrow House is a different experience to a standard modern hotel. Warm, friendly staff. When we had no kettle for teamaking, one was supplied immediately. I could have asked for a hairdryer but I didn't. I enjoyed the experience of a genuine country house and enjoyed our 3 nights there.

booked a guest house but arrive to find several cottage type houses on the grounds. each converted into several rooms. shown to our room which was small, dated and our bedroom door is the front door which leads out and onto the main entrance driveway. which proved to be a bit noisy, especially in the mornings with deliveries and people walking by not being considerate that people are sleeping just inside. no TV in the room or any room. free WiFi but bad signal in a lot of areas on the grounds. we arrived on a Friday and were staying till Sunday and no restaurant available at all , only on Sundays. no bar available at all only on Sundays. which was a bit of a let down as after a day's sight seeing in the area it would be nice to go back to your accommodation and have food and a drink and relax. the house isn't in a town so walking to a bar or restaurant isn't an option. we tried for 25 mins to get a taxi for our party of 6 to go to the nearby town of Cloyne for a drink. we had to eventually get a taxi from Middleton, 11km away to come pick us up to take us 2km as the local taxi man was "away". €40 return it cost to go to cloyne in a taxi and back. an unnecessary trip had the bar on site been available to all residents. breakfast is a separate charge to the room fee. and its a walk down the avenue to a separate house, which would prove inconviennient should the weather be bad. breakfast room is bright and dated .staff are polite but not very warm. toast, fruit, yogurt, juice and cerals on offer in the buffet and hot breakfast to order. fried eggs where snotty and the bacon was floppy and neither too warm. €15 per person for breakfast and kids charged the same. so our party of 6 was €90 for breakfast alone so opted out of that for the second day as it wasn't worth the price. all in all was disappointed with the venue and if we had read reviews before hand we wouldn't have gone at all. setting is lovely but it needs updating and modernising to justify the price.

Barnabrow is tucked away so that if you passed it you might just miss it. Yet as you ascend the winding driveway, it begins to unwrap itself like a present. When we first visited in June 2020, we were greeted by the owner Geraldine. She showed us around her beautiful home dating back in parts to the 1600s, the restored stables and outbuildings, the decking looking out towards Ballycotton, and up to the banquet hall with church ceiling and exposed timbers. Along the way we met the resident ducks, dogs, and donkeys. We were enchanted.
A year of twists and turns followed as lockdowns and restrictions came and went. Throughout it all, the team at Barnabrow kept us updated and uplifted, even though this must have been an uncertain time for them as well. In the end we were allowed twenty five people at the wedding and another twenty five at the ceremony. These changes happened only a few weeks before we got married and yet Barnabrow facilitated everything with understanding and good cheer. In the end our "small" wedding didn’t feel small at all. This was helped by the Barnabrow team (and our wonderful celebrant Caroline McCarthy) who set up the Fairy Grove with thought and tact. They even sorted the sunshine, which burst through the trees after we made our vows! (All this was captured brilliantly by our photographer Ciara Murphy and videographer Damien from Spéir Time.)
After the ceremony we went to the newly refurbished terrace, which gleamed in the summer light. There we listened to our band (the incredible Ukebox) playing to the backdrop of the Ballycotton lighthouse and the sea beyond (and enjoyed lots of delicious treats!). From here we were guided up to the dining room, where we were spoilt with course after course of exceptional delicacies (the soup in particular was a dream).
In Barnabrow, Geraldine, her family, and all the team, have built a truly magical place. As one of our guests said afterwards: “it was like slipping into another world”. Thank you for everything!

I booked this place on Hotels.Com, it seems in error I only inputted one guest instead of two, however during the booking the room clearly said sleeps 2. When we arrived we were told that there is an issue with the booking because it was only for one person, the receptionist however took the amount that I had booked the property at €144 for two nights. Sometime later I received an email saying that I owed another €80, considering that they couldn’t tell me if there was anyone available to cook breakfast, (which I suppose I didn’t mind), the room had no TV, the WiFi hardly worked, the settee was badly stained and dirty, the nearest restaurant was 10 minutes drive away. To cap it off my wife had a cold shower in the morning. When we complained about the water after my wife’s cold shower, we were told everyone else had hot water, and mysteriously the water then got hot. I decided that I didn’t think the property was worth another €80, so we had no choice but to book out a day early to avoid the charge. I believe that the property handled this situation very badly and I would not recommend anyone to stay here.

Visited here for a family function. The menu talked a good talk but unfortunately what was presented in terms of food was far from that. Service (mostly by the manager for us) was simply poor. Obnoxious and ignorant you would be reluctant to ask a question or make a request. If you are sensitive about covid you should avoid this restaurant. Whilst staff do wear masks, the function room was crammed with 3 large family gatherings with no adherence to social distancing or decent ventilation. I opened the doors and windows after the windows started digging up. Not the venue it used to be.

We booked our wedding in 2019 and, after two postponements, we were so delighted that Barnabrow was still available to us. From the outset, we found the communication very prompt and efficient from the wedding team, led brilliantly by Geraldine, Susan and Ruth. There were very few issues that could not be solved by an email or a phone call, so it made the whole process so easy. We stayed in one of the cottages the night before and it exceeded all our expectations - cosy, spacious, comfortable and perfect for photos on the day. The conservatory was bathed in a lovely Autumn light and felt so intimate. The food was truly delicious, thank you Adrian and team, and will be talked about for a long time to come! The bar staff were professional and pleasant. Our guests loved their rooms, and the rooms in the main house were beautiful. Breakfast was delicious, served in a gorgeous room with a cosy fire. We loved our day and are so happy that we chose Barnabrow. We are looking forward to visiting the Tea Rooms for Afternoon Tea to reminisce on our time there.

Barnabrow staff were simply wonderful for us throughout all of our changes of dates due to Covid. We got married here with 4 guests and had the most wonderful ceremony in the fairy fort followed by a sumptuous meal.
3 months later, with restrictions eased somewhat, we were finally able to have the day we wanted to have in March 2020 with our family and friends.
The food, service, craic, weather and location we're all exceptional. Susan, Jess, Ruth, Geraldine and of course the kitchen and service staff really made our day so special. All of our friends have been raving about the food, the venue, their cozy rooms...
Thanks everyone, we will visit soon for a Sunday lunch.

We stayed at Barnabrow Country House as a B&B and it was a great experience! Quaint and very nicely situated in the countryside outside Cork. Beautiful surroundings with goats and donkeys. Breakfast was served in the larger main building and it was delicious.

I stayed in a single room and cost €70 bed and breakfast. Imagine it's around €110. Ring reception and I'm sure they'll tell you as imagine you get a reduced rate given you're party of a wedding party. Sorry I can't be more help.
