We had our wedding reception at the great national hotel ballina 2 weeks ago. We highly recommend this hotel, for future couples for there wedding reception, or even just to dine or stay over. What more would you want, great food.. as I think this is a huge part of a wedding reception. Its what people talk about and from listening to all our guests, they thoroughly enjoyed the food. There was plenty of it too. Everyone was looked after so well by the staff. The staff are so friendly and plenty of times we were asked if we needed anything. Our wedding coordinator, Denise is super at her job. From the moment we first met her, we knew that this was the hotel for us to have our wedding there. She couldnt have done enough for us. We had every confidence in her and we were not disappointed. Siobhan the manager was very nice to deal with also. The decor displayed on the day was lovely, the reception room looked amazing, plenty of space and all the guests felt very comfortable. The breakfast the following morning was very good. The hotel overall is very clean. We really did have the most memorable wedding day at the great national hotel, ballina. 🙂

I stayed six nights as part of a 'staycation break'. Friends were in other rooms. Positives first: Staff: students formed the majority of the staff that we met and they could not be more helpful, pleasant and positive. Food: the quality and freshness of the cooked breakfast was consistently good. We ate from the dinner menu all week! There are daily specials but these were repeated so the choice was limited. However, the food was well prepared and reasonably priced. Room to improve: Considering it's trading as a 4* hotel it's odd that it doesn't have a restaurant (one space serves as bar, breakfast room and restaurant and the sound from the TV is piped all over it). Pandemic noise: the outdoor 'beer garden' at the rear of the hotel should have a closing time. On Saturday night at 12 midnight, an hour after I went to bed, there was loud 'singing' and shouting coming in my window which overlooked the 'garden'. This was repeated the second night. Closing the bedroom window isn't an option in summer weather. WiFi. The WiFi in my room only worked (at 20%) if I sat inside the door of the room. The staff's solution was that I could use the hotel lobby but that doesn't work if you need to go on an online meeting. TV. The outdated LCD TV was small (about 18"), and had about four channels whose signal kept breaking. Suggestions: A Breakfast menu would help - even just a board! (We were there two days before we realised porridge was available!) Discount: A break for people who stay more than a couple of nights? I stayed 6 nights at an average €130 for B&B. That's too much for this hotel. The hotel was busy when we stayed. Most other guests were family groups. The overall atmosphere was pleasant and relaxed. It worked as a base from which to explore Mayo. Thanks.

Hello Tom Thank you for taking the time to write this review. Thank you for highlighting the staff and food the staff will be delighted to see this. Our dining area where we do breakfast and evening meals is in our Mc Shane's Bistro where we have this highlighted on our website so that guests can see and read about our dining experience before they arrive. Regarding the noise level i do apologize as Mc Shane's Bar must be cleared by 11.30 so guests are asked to move to the lobby area to finish their drinks. I have checked our log book and no noise complaint's were made so can i suggest that any issues you experience in any hotel are brought to their attention so they can rectify immediately. Regarding the WIFI we have the company coming to look at it for any issues as we cant have this standard . It wasn't that it was just a solution it was something they tried to accommodate you in that situation as they even tried boosting the signal. The staff will always try their best to help no matter what the situation is. We do have a disposable menu that is given out and there is also a stand right next to the cold buffet of juices, cereals etc stating that porridge, fruit , pastries etc.is available and to please ask your server. So I am sorry you did not see that but we do have that there. From your details i see you booked on our website so you would have seen that we do offers for 2 nights , 3 nights and so on which was what you availed of. Again i would like to thank you for your feedback and as you said it was a pleasant and relaxed stay so i hope we get to welcome you back again. Kind Regards Siobhan Scally General Manager

We stayed 3 nights in July and had 2 dinners in the package. On arrival we were impressed by the hotel's appearance and easy parking. The reception area is impressive and the staff very friendly and organised. It must be pointed out that all of the staff were very friendly, attentive and professional. Unfortunately, our bedroom had no view, just a wall ... perhaps we should have asked for a rear aspect. The bedroom was not brilliant but was satisfactory. The strangest thing was the absence of a lounge. Apart from a half dozen seats in reception there was nowhere inside except McShane's Bistro. This is by far the weakest point of the hotel. The decor is grim and furnishings basic. It is certainly like a low order chain hotel. The menu is sadly limited and uninspiring: a special of simply 'Carbonara' reflects the point. Again, the staff were superb. Breakfasts could have been better but it was more the environment (although eggs, scrambled and poached were not very good). Scrapping Mc Shane's and completely modernising it and then upgrading the menu would be a start. A lounge would be good (somewhere) ... the hotel has the staff but the Great National chain needs to step up and invest.

Hello Ron Thank you for taking the time to write this review. Thank you for highlighting the staff as they really are doing a brilliant job as it hasn't been easy. Regarding your room i cannot really comment as you have given no feedback but we do have all amenities in the room hairdryer, iron , iron board, t/c etc in the room. You don't mention anything about cleanliness so it must have been good. Regarding a lounge area unfortunately this is something i cannot rectify as it is a structural and not something that would be done in the near future as the hospitality been effected by covid by been closed on and off for over 18months.. Our lobby does have different sections where we have armchairs for guests to relax as our lobby is quite spacious while abiding by covid guidelines. We do have an area up the stairs to the right which is a lovely quite spot that guests use to relax. You could say that could be a lounge area. You mention Carbonara but on the menu we have pasta dishes but also have a pasta of the day which was Carbonara on that day. Another day we had a lovely Homemade Lasagna and chips with coleslaw and house salad. So it does change like our roast of the day. I do welcome your feedback as it does help us to see things from a guests point of view. Kind Regards Siobhan Scally General Manager

Chose this hotel as a very last minute get away for myself, husband and 12 Yr old. First impressions were very good. Modern exterior and lobby. Extremely warm welcome and very efficient check in. Room was disappointing.. while it was absolutely spotless it was extremely dated.Tiny TV, Carpet had seen better days as had the beds, Shower was a disaster and there was no extractor fan in the bathroom. Now to the staff..... and all I can say is WOW!!!! The staff are an absolute credit to this hotel. They are warm, friendly and couldn't be any more helpful. There is a healthy mixture of young and more mature workers and each and everyone of them deserve to be praised. From Geraldine at breakfast to Josephine at lunchtime, we were treated Extremely well. In the current climate I was slightly wary being away from home but I needn't have worried. Every safety measure us in place and I didn't once feel uncomfortable or nervous. Thanks for an amazing stay.....we will definitely be back
