We loved it here. Very homely, the perfect place to relax and take time out. Betty is a lovely host. Lovely garden with chickens, ducks and geese. Nice view of harbour. The kitchen is well equipped. Highly recommend.
Hostel/Guest House I would call Kilcommon Lodge. There are hostel type dorms, but there are also private single & double rooms with dedicated showers & toilets. Nice, big communal kitchen and a lovely dining room over-looking Sruwaddacon 'fjord'. Very handy laundry service, also. Betty is a wonderful hostess who makes sure there's a roaring turf fire on every evening. Pub 3 minutes walk away. Barnatra (fuel/minimarket) - 5 mins drive. Belmullet - 15/20 mins drive.
The hostel is located in a beautiful remote area in West County Mayo- surrounded by animals and hills. It's the perfect place to relax and enjoy peace. Betty the owner, is such a genuinely friendly soul, who wants the best for all her guests. I've just volunteered for her for a few days, and it was just amazing, I already want to come back. She gave me duck eggs from her ducks, gorgeous vine tomatoes from her veg patch, and constantly checked I was comfortable and well fed! All the locals know Betty and the family, and all speak very highly. The locals and everyone else are so friendly and welcoming to me, which is a bonus being a solo traveller, (who has no idea where she is!) There is only 1 bus going to Kilcommon from Castlebar, which is where you have to change if you're coming from Knock. It leaves at 5pm. Hiring a car or bringing your own transport is more ideal if you wish to explore further parts of Mayo. But if you're happy on foot, there are some stunning walks up the hills and down to the beach. I would highly recommend this hostel for everyone, it is spotless, comfortable, beautiful and warm. Come to escape, relax, explore, meditate, drink, eat and enjoy! Thank you Betty n Co. 😍…
Fabulous location, with a view over the bay. Turf fire in the evenings, clean kitchen with upmarket appliances. Tastefully decorated, cosy and atmospheric. Added bonus of geese, pigs, and a horse to admire ! I liked it so much, I stayed an extra 3 days !
I really enjoyed my stay at Kilcommon lodge. The host, Betty, is very friendly and offers great advice on places to see in the area. The rooms are very clean and well kept. There is a nice living room area for relaxing in the evening with a warm fire. I would highly recommend. I am already planning my next trip back.
We stayed in Kilcommon Lodge Holiday Hostel in Aug - 2 adults and 5 children. Our first time in a hostel with a family. We were a bit apprehensive about staying in a hostel with the current Covid situation but Betty, the hostess, put us at ease straight away! She had a bathroom/shower allocated to each room so there was no crossover and she hadn’t accepted guests in all of her rooms, to allow more space for guests. The kitchen area was spotless. All guests respected each other’s space and we never felt uneasy about sharing spaces with others as anyone there was conscious of cleaning their area in the kitchen and not crowding. Betty has clothesline’s for hanging up the swim gear, tumble dryers, washing machines and was great for advice about places to visit. It was a lovely stay and we would recommend it to anyone!!!…
Everything you need from a hostel. Stayed in an en suite room and it the hostel had great facilities including free tea and coffee, cereals for breakfast and a nice common room with log fire. Friendly staff with tips of what to do locally and excellent scenery. Highly recommend
This is a great option for those wanting to visit Belmullet Peninsula or Achill Island. Quiet environment, good facilities and nice staff. Very good value for money. It is not on the main road, so it is convenient to have your own car.
What a beautiful, quiet place to stay. My son and I truly enjoyed our room with en suite. He had the Irish breakfast two days and couldn't have been happier. Betsy is a great host. It an easy drive to Belmullet and Downpatrick Head.
Excellent hostel in beautiful part of Ireland. Meals are provided on request. For those interested in geology/geography/history, the ceide fields are nearby. Not far away, the Jackie Clarke museum on Pearse Street, Ballina is a treasure trove of archival material.
