Our stay was so peaceful we felt as if we had certainly recharged our batteries. The location is delightful with stunning views over the valley behind the house and the sound of the river Sheen flowing out of sight. Breakfast catered for all tastes and the variety of local cheeses, meats and bread along with granola had been well thought out. Ann, the proprietor, went out of her way to help when I had a medical emergency late in the evening. Thankfully the prompt emergency treatment allowed me to get home to hospital.

What a treat to escape the crowds to this lovely home, where we enjoyed substantial breakfasts of locally sourced cheese, meats and bread plus fruit, yogurt and granola; a large and comfortable second-floor room with multiple windows so we got a great cross-breeze on warm nights; and a fantastic over-size tub/shower. I loved the feeling of being in the country and appreciated that we could end our days peacefully, even while being close to town. Anne was kind enough to leave all that we needed for early-morning coffee and tea so that we could beat the tour buses on the Dingle Peninsula and Ring of Kerry, plus she offered great insider information on places to avoid and places to visit. Great suggestions on hikes and restaurants. Contrary to other B&Bs we've stayed in, breakfast was NOT included in the rate, and Anne requested that we tell her the day before if we wanted breakfast. We understood this policy prior to arrival and found it convenient.

When I booked a room in Anne's house, I already felt that something special is awaiting me. I must say that the experience exceeded all my expectations. The house is spacious and bright, it oozes peace and creativity. In our bedroom downstairs the bed was very comfortable, we had a huge bathroom for our own use and our own exit to the back garden where one can walk down to the river Sheen where one can take a dip on a hot day or just meditate on the bank (or in the hammock). We used the house as a base for walks ( Garinish Island Mediterranean Garden in Glengariff, Dursey Island, Gleninchaquin Park, Derreen Garden in Lauragh, Carrauntoohil - highest peak of Ireland) therefore couldn't spend much daytime there on our 4-night stay, which I regret. However, the hearty breakfast including a range of local cheeses, sausages, fruit and bircher muesli prepared us for the day and I was always looking forward to sharing my experiences with Anne at the end of the day, who is also a keen walker and culture freak. On the practical side, we had a hire car and used both routes Google recommended and the one Anne proposed to get there from Kenmare. The Google one has more narrow roads so more adventurous. Kenmare also offers many restaurants from pub-food to fine-dining; supermarkets, lively but not overwhelming night life and Wednesdays there is a farmers market. I will definitely return, try the splendid top-floor room and spend more time in the living room or at the river reading.

Kenmare Eco Lodge seemed lovely at first, we could never have known what was about to unfold... We booked 3 nights with breakfast on booking.com but when we arrived were told that breakfast wasn't included, even though we had chosen the higher rate on the website to include breakfast. She told us if we wanted breakfast she would charge us an additional 15 euro per night amounting to 45 euro extra for our stay. Of course, we were completely taken aback and opted not to have breakfast at all rather than pay even more! The explanation was that the discounted rate on booking.com did not represent the actual rate she wanted to charge and that if she had removed this 'discount option' it would negatively impact her placement on google or something to that effect. Basically we were lured into a contract at a particular rate and she changed it to a higher rate when we arrived. When we suggested that the contract should be honoured we were presented with a litany of reasons about how we were unreasonable to expect breakfast to be included. The owner behaved in an extremely patronising manner making us feel like we were stupid and had done something wrong when in fact it was her fault the discounted rate was presented online. She even said to us 'the same thing happened to the other guests staying here and they don't mind', as if to suggest that we were unreasonable in expecting the very terms we signed up to. Booking.com phoned us that night and said that they had 'secured agreement the property owner to honour breakfast'. The next morning we went in for breakfast expecting our reception to be much nicer and more pleasant. The reality was quite different, she was visibly disappointed to have to serve us and continued to be defensive and present hostility to the point where the situation was so untenable that we had no choice but to leave. We have never ever had to leave a property before and while the owner will no doubt come back with a barrage of excuses for her behaviour, the reality is that it is quite possible that her tactic for making extra money is to offer a discounted rate and then bully unsuspecting guests into a higher rate on arrival. I note that during conversation she complained extensively about having to pay a fee to booking.com, this person cannot accept that margins are tight and will gladly ruin your holiday to benefit her own pocket. If there was an issue with the rate being too low for her, the professional thing to do was to speak to booking.com to raise the price going forward. If she had any integrity and professional conduct, she would have accepted our booking and we would have been none the wiser. Instead we were made to feel guilty as if we were ripping her off and not the other way round. Once a contract is offered and accepted its terms must be honoured. In the hospitality business one is supposed to be hospitable! Don't stay here.

.., few of the 57/70 reviewers giving 10:10 and high eights and nines on the major booking sites have posted their satisfaction on trip advisor. Both couples who wished to express dissatisfaction show no such reticence. ... they have taken the trouble to turn to trip advisor.......giving comprehensive and passionate reviews of great length, showing flair for conjecture and finer point detailing.

We stayed three nights here and loved it. A comfortable, well equipped room with a stunning view. Ann, the host, was wonderful. Great information about the area and a wicked sense of humour. Delicious breakfasts. Would highly recommend.

Thank you Liz that’s very nice of you to take the time to write and thanks so much for all the lovely words on your booking site. Trip Advisor and Google maps are consulted by many for their reviews and so many of my good reviewers leave a review on the booking site where it languishes, wasting their sweetness on the desert air. Desert, speaking of which, hope you enjoyed the two hour chill in Dubai 🐪 🌵
