Just returned from a night at One Castle Street and can honestly say it couldn’t be bettered. Janette is the most lovely landlady and nothing is too much trouble. She was telling me she is only letting 3 rooms at the moment in her charming house and only takes telephone bookings (you won’t find One Castle Street on any 3rd party websites). And it is THE most charming place. The room we stayed in (?Lavender room) was in a part of the house dating back to the 1650s and is full of character. The furnishings and linen were top quality and the room looked out over a beautiful walled garden. Although we shared a bathroom with another room, we had a private lavatory which was perfect. She provided us with a parking permit (parking in Bakewell is at a premium) which was fab, as the cottage is very central. Breakfast was excellent and there were many personal touches provided for the guests. It’s a total mystery to me why the previous review was for 1 star? I’ve wracked my brain’s but I just can’t fathom it out. I can only guess it was given out of spite for some reason and speaks volumes about their integrity. I will certainly be back. Already planning it! Thank you so much! …
...for an uncomfortable bed, no tissues, no toilet role holder. We had to ask for a top sheet and for curtains to block out the early-morning light. The door to the room steps leads immediately onto a rather treacherous staircase. In a town of incredible charm, this accommodation was an extreme disappointment (particularly compared to what we anticipated from the website description). The room was cluttered with unnecessary old furniture instead of leaving room for suitcases. Cookies left in room were past their use-by-date. Breakfast was quite acceptable.
Great central location and welcoming host. The room was lovely, clean and spacious. The bed was large and comfortable. We bought our 7 week old with us and the host was very accommodating. Shower and breakfast was great too!
Cannot rate highly enough. Warm welcome, gorgeous cosy traditional room, great food and hospitality. Location is central to everything and recommendations given. Wifi code and sky tv, en-suite to the room we had. Would definitely stay here again.
The house is old and very charming, conveniently located just moments from the heart of the town but in a quiet side street. It is a grade two listed property and retains many original features with the addition of the owners personal style, making it a very relaxing and welcoming place to stay. The two main bedrooms are a good size, one is en-suite, the other shares a bathroom with a single room. The single room is small but this is made clear on booking and it is very well priced. Breakfast is exceptional, lots of choice, freshly cooked and well presented (with a smile) The house is warm, beds are comfortable, lots of clean towels and generally an air of generous hospitality.
