What a lovely surprise. Having failed to get a table in the cafe opposite, we fell back on the Rutland Hotel. The entrance wasn't promising, more side-door than grand entrance and then having to wait adjacent to where groups were sat having coffee and cake. Never mind, we were attended to promptly and led to a very lovely dining room. This was/is decorated in an odd combination of historic - masses of paintings (mostly portrait/country) then brightly coloured furniture. Many of the tables are in crescent-shaped booths. We'd dressed up just a little for Sunday lunch and I'm glad we did. There was no pretension in the service - friendly and efficient - but the room lent a sense of occasion and why not? I can't think of many places that retain old-world charm yet aren't musty in some way. Manchester Town Hall cafe (before closure) is the nearest I can think of recently. Most such venues which would once have been the smartest place in town have completely abandoned their origins. The food was good and good value.

Spent a lovely weekend here in August for my birthday with my boyfriend. only annoying thing was the car park was closed and no prior notice of this, so then you have to park in the long stay car parks which is expensive and you have to get up early at 8am to do another ticket. The hotel had been refurbished and it was gorgeous! Our room was spacious and they provided us with a coffee machine and fresh milk. The bed was one of the comfiest i have slept in. We were lucky enough to have a bath in our room which also had a bath tray so you could put drinks on there while having a bath. Lovely touch! My dad had phoned the hotel prior to our arrival to let them know it was my birthday and he had them put a lovely birthday card and bottle of prosecco in our room. We ate our evening meal there and the food was amazing! We were so full but didn't want to miss out on having the bakewell pudding so we had one to share, it was amazing! Would not hesitate to stay here again!

Excellent weekend away during the previous lockdown situation. Beautiful room with service that was exemplary. The downside was 'free parking' was very restricted and you could get back from a day out at Chatsworth like we did and find there was no parking available even if you had a 'Hotel Voucher'. Also this establishment is very popular with locals to eat at, no preference is given to hotel guests whatsover which was very annoying when tables were not available to either eat at or drink bearing in mind you had paid a lot more money than someone walking in off the street, could not understand the logic of that one?

I booked a surprise overnight stay here for my wife to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary as we had our reception here and stayed overnight. Unfortunately we had to quickly bring our booking forward due to the unexpected lockdown but the staff were very accommodating and helpful in making it happen for us. Once in the hotel, we were wowed by the fantastic changes that have been recently carried out. It oozes character throughout and their have been some substantial changes on the first floor. The spacious new bar is a great improvement with the old one becoming a trendy coffee shop. Reception is well positioned with the main feature central staircase remaining in its original position. The former function room has become the main dining room with a magnitude of local history adorning the walls. Our room was excellent with a lovely comfortable large bed and well appointed bathroom. Both dinner and breakfast were super meals with the dinner menu offering a good selection of reasonably priced high quality starters, mains and deserts. Thank you to all the staff we met at the Rutland Hotel who made our stay and reminiscing so enjoyable.

Enjoyed our stay, would like to visit for Christmas, depending on the lockdown. All safety measures in place and we felt very safe. Our room was up 2 flights of stairs (room 200) not good if you have bad knees and back. Comfortable stay. Staff were friendly & helpful
