Saboga Lodge is a whole vibe! Very tropical/tulum feeling in the natural decor elements and hip electronic pool music quietly playing. This is a full service hotel with coffee, cocktails, meals (food was amazing), etc available on hand which is convenient for it’s remote location. We loved the pool, yoga deck, and overall social spaces in the hotel. The beach directly in front is rocky so it’s not great for swimming but ideal for snorkeling and its a 10 min walk along the shore to Encanto beach which is gorgeous. I’d definitely recommend Saboga Lodge for couples/friends looking for a place to unwind and be able to enjoy hotel amenities (possibly the only place offering this on the island). Plus there is nearly NO ONE at the beaches here which is quite special to be able to enjoy to yourself. This is a hidden gem that won’t be a secret for long!

Great place to stay and enjoy an island experience. All of the staff/workers here were so friendly and the food was delicious. I would highly recommend to stay here because the rooms are very clean and bed was comfortable. I slept for 9 hours and woke up feeling wonderful, would stay here again.

To sum up in advance: This place gets a 2-star review (although I was about to only give it 1 star). One star for the friendly staff - they were always helpful and trying to do their best despite a setup that did not allow for it. The second star is for the owner for professionally dealing with the huge disappointment the entire stay meant for us and which I am going to explain below. Just to be clear: We have travelled a lot and stayed in many very „basic“ hostels - not an issue - as well as in really good hotels. We are fine with both but what we don‘t like is being charged for a 4-5-star-hotel while staying in a dirty, badly managed basic hotel (which other reviews in 2022 confirm). The hotel premises were not clean. Leaves, blossoms and dust everywhere across the place. This only started to change the day before we left. I don‘t expect a dozen of cleaners running around all day, but there were so many corners that have clearly not been cleaned for a long time. Sunbeds had stains, tables at the pool were not cleaned, etc. Our room as well was not clean - and this is something I can’t and won’t accept when paying $160 (!) per night. I am not commenting on all details, just have a look at the pictures attached to this review. Seriously, this was far more dirty than many hostels I have stayed in! Mould, stains, old cobwebs (e.g. not from yesterday, rather from the past weeks), greasy fingerprints all over the balcony door, dark hairs and the lid of a shampoo bottle of the previous guest in the shower. The shower itself is horrible, the shower head was entirely calcified and it took 2-3 minutes until enough water had come out to rinse the shampoo. Oh, and yes, as another reviewer mentioned already: No hot water. The only thing in the room that worked as you would expect for the price was the air conditioning – if there is power! We experienced a power outage across the entire island – nothing the hotel can be blamed for. But the backup power plant they run seems insufficient and hence the power got cut for several hours during one night. And with no power the pump system does not work, hence no water. Really hard to enjoy the holiday facing these limitations. When talking to the owner who showed up the day before our departure, he told me two things. Firstly that he had been away for several weeks - which we already guessed as we felt this place was badly/insufficiently managed in so many dimensions. Secondly, he said that he decided to run this place in an eco-friendly way, not using herbicides, no providing hot water etc. The impact this has or might have on guests has been compiled in a document that should have been sent to the guest upfront so they could decide if they really want to stay in this hotel. Unfortunately, we have not been provided with this document. The owner apologized and gave us a discount. Finally, the food: Regarding dinner, not much to complain, it was alright, but nothing to write home about, so I don‘t understand the raving reviews of some fellow travelers. Portions are normal, prices a bit too high for what you get. Breakfast was below expectations: First day, we ordered and were told that most options were not available due to the food still being shipped to the island. Again, nothing the staff is to be blamed for, they were super friendly and tried their best - but this is a management issue. On all days, breakfast took 45min to be served after ordering. Breakfast as in scrambled eggs, toast, pancakes, some fruits, a coffee and a juice. Even when on vacation and without any time pressure, this is not what you expect when paying these room rates. To sum up: We were looking forward to some relaxing days in Saboga which we finally did not have. The hotel over-sells and clearly under-delivers, no value for money. Such a shame as there‘s a lot of potential in this place.

Saboga Lodge markets itself as a high-end luxury retreat, but when we arrived the kitchen didn't have half of the dishes on the menu and only one beer. The staff were nice but unprepared and there was no actual check-in/welcome brief. Instead of including the transportation fare from the docks to Saboga Lodge, know they will charge you extra PER PERSON even though you're in the same party (so $15 USD for a group of 3 people, for only a 4-minute ride). It would be much more reasonable to either provide a first courtesy ride, include it in the general fare or even charge a fare per group. The owner also pressures his employees into telling guests not to order food from the outside (which we recommend given that the food options at the hotel are very expensive and mediocre), has a loud and agressive dog that walks unleashed around the premises (we were not told it was a pet-friendly hotel) and will say hello yet show no interest in inquiring about your satisfaction or how to make your stay more agreeable (there were only 5 guests when he was there). The staff are unsure on how to make a fruit bowl if you ask for one. The seafood on the menu is not fresh (it's all frozen and comes from the city). It's a tropical island with a fishermen's village, for heaven's sake. There is no hot water. The "chef" will ask you in the evenings to hurry up if you're gonna order dinner because he wants to go and you're the reason he needs to stick around. The hotel's boat tours to the virgin islands around Saboga can take up to 4 hours and cost $35 USD per person but do not even include a snack. Ridiculous. Overall, a dissatisfying price-quality relationship. Saboga Lodge is among the most expensive stays in the island, but you don't get your money's worth. I would not recommend it.

Hello Adrian, We are sorry you did not have the experience you deserved. But let us clarify some of the points you referenced before: 1. The manager was on site when you were there and he made an inventory of our stock, and everything on the menu was available, except one type of beer that was out of stock. The logistic of stock on an island can sometimes be tricky this is why we are committed to supply ourselves locally as much as we can. The shrimps served during your stay were actually freshly caught by our fisherman, Sr Gustavo. 2. Regarding the transport, this is a service provided by a third party company. We can include in the rates upon demand but since your reservation was made at a discounted rate, we could not include it this time. 3. At no time did the management of the hotel force you to eat at the hotel, you were told not to drink your own alcohol and bring your own food as it is prohibited, but you have decided not to respect our rules, this is unacceptable. 4. Our team found that you and your friends were hard to approach, never leaving the room , drinking and playing loud music. Regardless, the housekeeping team has provided daily service, the Chef has prepared the few plates that you had ordered within the opening hours as per as indicated on our hotel rules. 5. The Tours are also provided by a third party company, and we have ensured we went with the best price quality option from the island. They do offer drinks and snacks on their boat but at an extra fee. You need to pay for your consumption. 6. Speaking of paying your bill, you have an outstanding balance on your account. Kindly contact us to resolve this as soon as possible. We trusted your words when you left the island that you would take care of your bill.

My husband and I stayed at Saboga Lodge for 4 nights in early June 2022. Overall we had a good time and I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who doesn't mind a little adventure in their travels! The hotel and island are quiet and beautiful. My #1 advise: BRING BUG REPELLANT! The mosquitos will ruin your trip if you are not prepared. As someone else mentioned below, the beach in front of the hotel has quite a bit of trash that has drifted ashore from abroad. However, we walked 10-minute down from the hotel and found some of the most beautiful, pristine beaches we had ever seen! For 2 days we laid on the beach completely alone and heard nothing but the sound of crashing waves and birds! The hotel staff is very nice! The food is DELICIOUS and reasonably prices (about $10-17 for a dinner entre). But the kitchen is very small and everything is made to order so you may have to wait awhile (15 to 45 minutes). The cook was always good about giving estimates on how long things would take. Also note, despite what the website says, they do not allow outside food! I think 4 nights was a little too long to stay. Most other guest were only there for 2 nights and I think would have been perfect. Especially since if you take the ferry you arrive really early your first day (9 AM) and leave in the late afternoon on the day of your departure (3 PM).

Thank you for sharing your opinion and helping us to keep growing. As you mention, our Lodge is a small paradise located on a remote island and due to high rainfall mosquitoes increase, however, we have for sale Off, for mosquitoes, because we understand how annoying they can be. There is a lot of nature, the idea is always to connect with the environment and our beaches are varied, good that you found a suitable place. We continue working to provide more and more comfort to our guests. Thank you for sharing your comment that helps us to keep growing.

This was not a trip to remember in good terms. So, first things first; If you think a ride in a small boat on the open ocean for 90 minutes sounds fun, this might be a trip for you. The good points: the employees on site were nice and we mostly communicated through WA, the Chef was good at his tasks, food was well cooked, seasoned well. The staff who delivered food while over worked were great, always a smile and bringing our food hot. The Beach is lovely and a nice dip, ignore all the trash. It’s an Eco Lodge Negative: Many things, lack of attention to detail Lack of upkeep (Maintenance) of the resort So, who is this resort for? People who don’t mind roughing it, who love the ocean (because you are 35 KM for the mainland). People who are fluent in Spanish. For us it’s a no. We tend to like resorts of abundance; this was a resort with a lack of abundance. Side note: I know the Lockdowns have been hard on the tourism community, and this was not our first stay, the biggest problem was it was oversold from the outset. I wish them luck there is much to improve here.

Thank you for sharing your opinion and helping us to keep growing. As you mentioned, our Lodge is a small paradise located 2 hours away from Panama City by ferry, some people prefer to arrive by small plane or helicopter in 10 minutes. There is a lot of nature, the idea is always to connect with the environment. We are not looking for artificial abundance, however, we keep working to give more and more comfort to our guests. Staff - was lovely and they did everything to make us feel comfortable. Food was great, really enjoyed the breakfast. Property - shows on Instagram as eco and sustainable, clearly his is used as marketing as on site you easily realise construction isn't sustainable. Theres trash hidden and in the open all over the property and the beach. Trash - made it depressing so we we walked to the next beaches and just came back for meals. Water - isn't hot hot, just luckywarm.

Thank you for sharing your comments, they are important to keep growing. We do continuous cleaning days to make sure everything is in order, finally we do not have water heater, we are eco-friendly and this is part of the experience, the good thing is that with the climate of the island you will want to cool off for sure. We are sorry to hear that you were not able to enjoy your stay to the fullest, it would be a pleasure to have you back in our little paradise.
