I’m just back from a 2 night stay. We booked the ballymastoker yurt and it was situated beautifully off to the side of the site, offering views beach and fields below.

In the yurt, the bed was made up with 2 pillows each (4 in total), a bottom cover and a duvet. Fuel was provided for the stove in the yurt and clear pricing (which is very reasonable at €4 per big box and bag) was shown for all the extra turf and kindling you might need for the stove and coal bags for the BBQ. Over the 2 nights we used two boxes of logs and turf for the stove and two bags of kindling between the campfire and stove and a bag of BBQ coals, all amounting to €17.00. I would recommend using the fuel provided on site for convenience and because the prices are very reasonable.

We were allocated our own bathroom on site which consisted of 2 showers, 2 stalls and 2 urinals. Only one shower and cubical was in use during our stay within our bathroom, which wasn’t an issue. The shower had great pressure and water heated up right away. There was also a hairdryer provided which was a very nice touch!

We didn’t use the kitchen as we BBQ’d both nights and had our own portable gas stove but the kitchen was big and offered all the facilities and appliances you could need. Each Yurt in use during our stay had their own time allocated in the mornings and evenings to ensure social distancing.

It was my first time glamping or camping and I was completely blown away by how much thought and organisation Helen and Sean have put into operating such a wonderful and unique place.

We will definitely be back!

Thanks very much for your very detailed review here. So pleased to hear that you found Portsalon Luxury Camping wonderful and unique ;) It is lovely to hear that you appreciated our thought and organisation - we changed things quite a bit during 2020 to adhere to public safety guidelines - the reason that there was only one cubicle and shower in use in your bathroom was that we rotated the use of them so that there was a gap of 48 hours or more before you used a shower or toilet someone else had used! We did loads of extra cleaning too and sanitised everything between stays. It is brilliant that you brought stove and barbecue - in these COVID times the safest way is to avoid sharing of course. Our kitchen was set up - as you say - with individual allocated times and individual allocated crockery etc - sanitised between guests. We have signed up to the Failte Ireland Safety Charter and done quite a lot of extra infection control training as well as keeping abreast of all public health guidance. The safety and comfort of our guests is really important to us. Great to hear that you plan to return - we will be really pleased to see you again! Our very best wishes Helen and Sean

Beautiful setting equipped with all you’d need. Bed and bedding good quality. Stove was great addition - it rained on our second night So was perfect while listening to rain on the yurt. Bathroom/showers are individual to yurt, great at reducing contact with others due to covid. We were given protected times to use the kitchen in morning and evenings which was good but could use at any other time outside of this. Lockers were available with plugs to charge devices. A really great stay. Do remember to bring a light source as no electric in some yurts and certain ones a dark walk at night away from toilets without one. Will definitely be back!

From the moment we arrived we felt right at home. The Yurt (Mulroy) was clean, spacious and well equipped. The toilets and shower area were laid out in a way that each yurt had their own toilet and shower which was essential for us. Each Yurt had an area for barbecuing and also an outside fire. We also had stove in the Yurt which made it lovely and cosy. The kitchen area was very clean and very well equipped. Helen and Sean were lovely hosts and were there help with anything we needed. We will definitely return.

I’m guessing that many of the 5-star reviews for Portsalon Luxury Camping have come from serious campers, who will look on this place as a welcome respite from the chores of assembling and disassembling tents, inflating and deflating airbeds, sharing toilet blocks, etc, etc. Here your yurt is all ready for you, complete with a proper bed plus kitchen facilities and your own toilet and shower facilities. On top of that, there’s the incredible view of the ocean on your doorstep, and pleasant owners who seem to genuinely enjoy hosting visitors.

However. If, like me, you aren’t a seasoned camper and you’re staying here because of its proximity to Portsalon Beach and other tourist sites in County Donegal, you might question what you’re getting for your €100. And I’m not talking about the lack of electricity in the yurt, or the fact that the toilets and kitchen are a four-minute walk away—neither of these were deal breakers for me at all. But for €100 you don’t even get a complimentary two-pack of biscuits in your yurt? Or a torch to get you from the yurt to the toilets in the dead of night? Or any kind of toiletries in your shower, even bar soap, even TOWELS? And every extra that IS offered, like charcoal or peat/wood for your woodburner, comes at an additional cost.

It wasn’t a bad experience staying here. But I guess I slightly question whether it was a luxury experience.

Thank you very much for taking the time to review our site here on TripAdvisor. We are pleased to hear that you found us pleasant and the views incredible. We were obviously a little bit disappointed to read your criticisms and receive a three star rating - of course, we are very proud of our usual five star rating and work extremely hard to meet the needs and expectations of our guests. You are absolutely correct that it is a matter of perspective. We try to appeal to visitors who really want to enjoy the outdoors camping experience with the added luxuries that we can offer. We try to describe our site in accurate and honest terms so that guests have a good idea of what we offer before they get here. As you say, you chose our site for location rather than for our type of accommodation and it sounds rather like you would be a bit more at home in a hotel. We are working hard to ensure that everything we do is as environmentally friendly as possible - thus the kind of complimentary extras that we offer are flowers from our garden, filtered spring water, hot water bottles, hand sanitiser, fresh eggs from our rescued free range chickens, book swap library. We very happily offer use of torches etc too if we are asked (COVID-19 guidelines required us to remove as many shared use items as possible which is why torches are not currently in all yurts). Our bathrooms have paper towels for hand washing but we ask guests to bring along their own towels and toiletries - quite standard practice at all camping/glamping sites - but OF COURSE we would have provided towels/soap for you if you had not come prepared - you didn't mention that you needed them. We always ask whether everything is ok and if you need anything to let us know - I recall asking you specifically when i had a chat with you both and you certainly didn't indicate any dissatisfaction at all. Our pricing really is quite competitive for our sector and we try to offer value for money - we are sorry that in this instance we didn't meet your expectations. With our very best wishes Helen and Sean

Recently stayed for 2 nights...wish I had booked for longer. Loved the glamping experience. The yurts are spacious, the planting around the yurts makes them very private, you have your own outdoor seating and area for a campfire.
The bedding is warm and comfortable and the little stove inside the yurt is perfect for a bit of heat.
Toilets were spotless and so was the kitchen. Helen and Sean have input COVID safe measures ( including different times to use the kitchen area and dividing up the toilet/shower block so you aren't sharing).
Port Salon is about 2m away, with a fabulous beach, and watersports and restaurants ( doing takeaway when we were there).
It was just perfect, sitting around our campfire, with a glass of wine, looking at the views and hearing nothing but birds and the odd sheep.
Already thinking about when I can return!

Stayed in the Ballymastocker yurt with my boyfriend for 2 nights in June. Absolutely beautiful surroundings, so private and peaceful, great base to explore the surrounding area. The yurts are very spacious, ample storage, comfortable beds and wood burning stove kept us really cosy all night but even when the fire went out the duvet was warm enough to keep us comfortable. With the solar powered fairy lights all lit up at night
the yurt looked so pretty, magical in fact. Short walk uphill to the toilet /shower block and kitchen which I was able to manage at 6 months pregnant without a problem but a torch or similar definitely needed for those night-time toilet trips. Very impressed with how well the facilities were managed in terms of social distancing, separate toilet amd showers for each yurt with lockable doors and a set time for using the kitchen at breakfast and dinner. Kitchen very clean and well equipped with everything you could need including individual lockers for charging phones, i pads etc. Owners live on site and we found them to be very friendly and accommodating, they even posted my hospital notes to me after I accidentally left them behind to save me a long car journey back to retrieve them. Without a doubt the best glamping site I've stayed at and really look forward to booking again. Thank you Helen and Sean for such a perfect experience!

Perfect short break in a beautiful setting. Our yurt was incredibly comfortable and cosy and the outdoors area was well set up. We enjoyed an open fire each evening looking at the stunning views and slept so well inside the yurt. The bed and bed linen was incredible quality and it was dark and quiet. The plots are very thoughtfully positioned and landscaped so you feel you have a lot of privacy and never really see or hear other guests. So relaxing we never wanted to leave!

We enjoyed 2 nights in the Mulroy yurt near the end of the very warm spell of weather. The yurt was like a sauna when we arrived but quickly cooled down once the sun went down.

The yurt is huge and very comfortable and has sockets and a light unlike the other yurts. The bed is comfortable and provided a great nights sleep.

The toilet and shower building is very clean and inspires confidence re Covid compliance. The kitchen is also very good though would benefit from a microwave and a toaster. The 3 yurts on site are totally private and not visible to each other.
The access road is quite narrow and rough and in general the road to the beach and village of Portsalon is not very suitable for walking and necessitates bringing the car.

Portsalon has a beautiful beach very suited to long walks. There is not much in terms of restaurants in the area. We got a takeaway from Portsalon golf club on the two nights which was fine.

The nearby Fanad lighthouse is beautiful and the views are superb especially in the sunshine.
Rathmullan is 20 minutes drive and has a car ferry to Buncrana costing e17 giving easy access to the Inishowen peninsula.

The yurt is something different and while relatively expensive, it is a worthwhile experience.

Thank you very much for your comprehensive review. We were pleased to hear that you had a worthwhile experience and found the yurt comfy and the facilities clean. (we know that the kitchen benefits from toaster and microwave - these items had to be removed according to COVID-19 safety guidelines i am afraid - sorry about that - hopefully they are back next year!) We also hope that next year there will be quite a bit more indoor dining available locally - as you suggest, it was obviously fairly limited during our 2020 and 2021 seasons. Thank you for choosing to stay here with us this year. With our very best wishes Helen and Sean.

Highly recommend this experience. The Yurts are extremely comfortable and charming, with fantastic views over the bay and out to the local hills. There is lots of space; our daughter loved roaming around the field we had in front of our yurt and playing with the chickens. The nearby beach is one of the best you will find anywhere. Helen and Sean were very accommodating and welcoming and the kitchen and bathroom facilities were ideal and very clean (we had our own bathroom and separate kitchen slots due to Covid - it was very reassuring with clear guidance and lots of cleaning behind the scenes to make everyone feel safe).

Donegal is one of those counties thats a little bit more challenging to get to....but its so worth it. This county take social distancing to a whole new level. Stunning beaches - empty. This was my first but definitely not my last visit to Port Salon Luxury camping. The Yurts are spacious and welcoming and Sean and Helen have put great thought into how to keep it Covid compliant with only 3 of the 5 Yurts being used to ensure bathroom and kitchen facilities. LOVED it. Waking up to a braying donkey in the field next door should be everyones alarm clock. With two great beaches nearby, the Fanad drive - put it onto your staycation list.

Is there power in the yurt itself?
Portsalon, Ireland5 contributions
HI Mags, there is power in just one of the yurts - 'Mulroy' - the others do not have power (solar fairy lights/ battery fairy lights). Each yurt has a lockable cabinet in the communal kitchen/lounge area with charging points for phones etc.

would this be a good place for a crowd of people or are they strict on noise? thanks

Hi there, We are a family friendly rural site and so operate a 'quiet hours' policy between 11pm and 9am. We take bookings for the full site by arrangement with a more relaxed approach to noise though as the owners live on site we still request minimal noise after midnight. You can check the website for more info and you can contact the owners Sean and Helen by email or phone 0876016654
