This is a "love it - hate it" place, we totally felt in love with it, in spite of 3 days of rain, bad and muddy roads to get there and only very basic services and amenities. It is a great experience of Xhosa life, I wish we stayed there longer and I hope to be able to visit again.

If you want feel the xhosa culture, this place is perfect for it. We had a amazing village Tour and a good canoing tour. Breakfast is okay and Dinner really good! Be aware that the description How to get there is not really precise!

This place is incredible, if you are driving along the wild coast (or even if you're not planning on it) you must stay here! A gentlemen started this lodge always knowing that he wanted to turn over ownership to the local Xhosa community. And in 2014 that's exactly what he did! This place is 100% community owned and run and... More

We spent three days at Bulungula lodge, an ensemble of rondavels located in a wonderful position between the sea, the river and the smooth surrounding hills. The two hours of white road needed to arrive there are soon forgotten once you are there. This is a place where you can easily forget your world and enter in a another dimension, in... More

We had a lovely three night stay at Bulungula and enjoyed it very much. The journey from the main road is somewhat arduous, (just over two hours over not great roads) but is interesting and gives you an insight into rural life in this part of South Africa. We had a rondavel for 4 which had nothing in it bar... More

Me and my boyfriend booked to stay for two nights at Bulungula Lodge, but only ended up staying for one, and for good reason... Firstly we were aware of the road condition on the way there and knew our little polo may struggle at times. But we were surprised at how easily it coped. However, the car was pretty much... More

Out of three weeks in South Africa, Bulugula is definitely one of the major highlights of my travel. The location of town is little hard to get to, but you won't regret the effort once you get here because of the beauty of its hills and oceans. I had stayed in a dozen of lodgings in SA and it was... This place is something different. Being 100% community owned, this is a great initiative for empowering the local Xhosa people. Bulungula Lodge offers a variety of activities, ranging from a guided tour through the village, horse rides, to massages or canoeing. The money goes directly to the community. If you don't feel like engaging in any sorts of activity, this... More

I have been to a lot of places in the Wild Coast. This is probably my favourite - although choosing a favourite in the Wild Coast is tricky! It is a very short walk to the beach and river mouth - I don't know of another backpackers in this area closer to a beach. The setting (like the rest of... More

Our stay at Bulungula lodge was really the best part of our holidays along the wild coast. Amazing setting and view over the beach & sea, rustic, colourful and fun decoration in the common areas. We absolutely loved the hot showers concept- very original, and the dry toilets. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Lunch & Dinner at Bulungula... More
