Great location and walking distance to the night market. It's a handy place to stay. There are many souvenirs shops & restaurants along this small road. Would recommended to do a food donation in the morning, just a few min from this guesthouse. We like to sit in the balcony upstairs & enjoyed Mae Khong River view in the morning & evening. Breakfast were fantastic and great value. The breakfast/dining area down stairs is open air which you also enjoy Khong river or walk to the walk path along the river. The rooms are compact, stairs and corridor are too small and inconvenient to walk with the bags/suitcases. However we like Chiankhan a lot, we thought of coming back again.
My Thai gf rang this place before we booked with agoda and they said nothing about the fact that just outside there is heavy machinery driving steel girders into the river bank. This makes a loud and repetitive banging noise that shakes the building. We just gave the keys back and had a delightful stay at the Chiang Khan Hill resort with buffet breakfasts all in. My advice is check before you book.
From the Tonkhong Guesthouse one gets a ringside view of the Mekong as it flows lazily downstream. In the distance are the green hills and dense foliage of the Lao PDR. Unlike in Thailand, the forests, or what’s left of them there appear so unkempt and haphazard. The balcony on the first floor is an ideal spot to read a book, doze in the afternoon heat or just let your thoughts drift with the boats that go past. As the evening comes, the promenade along the river, or the terrace of the guesthouse, are ideal for watching the sun go down in the distance. Come nightfall the silence is something to be experienced. The guesthouse is very clean and the owners are incredibly friendly, and a storehouse of local information. Don’t miss the early morning breakfast with the mist over the water still to lift, or the procession of monks going by as they collect alms from the faithful. The rooms are adequate but comfortable. The beds could be rearranged to optimize space.…
There are Kindly steps and clean room. I stayed river view room 6nights with my friend. Location is a little far main street but temple is near. You want to see "takbat ". It's easy. Especially Viewing River sunset at the top floor is very beautiful. I missed this place.
Tonkong Guesthouse stays the only real backpackhaunt in Chiang Khan. It stays the best place to meet fellow travellers. Next to that the food is most excellent (never trust a skinny cook they say ...)
