Maratua Guesthouse is the only guesthouse on the island of Maratua. We are located in the beautiful jungle, right on the beach. Our chalets are eco-concept chalets that have been described as cute and comfortable by our guests. We have a wonderful restaurant with astounding sunset views. Turtles come and eat the grass in front of the restaurant every morning. The diving and snorkeling in this area is fantastic and we can help you arrange trips anywhere in the vicinity.

This is an outstanding guesthouse in one of the most beautiful and untouched parts of Indonesia. It is a mission to get to (we came from Tanjung Puting and it involved a flight back to Java, and onto Balikpapan where we overnighted, then a flight to Berau followed by 3 hour road transfer and 2 hours by boat) but sometimes in life the most worthwhile places are the ones you have to work hardest to get to. We came with our kids and loved the swimming with turtles, the amazing nearby islands of Kakaban and Sangalaki and also the amazing pools you have in the interior of Maratua. We came originally for mantas but these are harder to see around this area at the moment but ended up going on a whale shark trip. This is a couple of hours away so we left at 4am but ended up being one of the most extraordinary experiences I have ever had. We spent over an hour in the water and in that time saw between 7-10 whalesharks all within a few metres. At times they brushed past you as they headed to the platform where the fishermen threw unwanted fish from the previous nights catch back in the water. There were only two other people with us making this experience so special. Jun and Ana are so helpful in setting up all these experiences and the guesthouse was perfect for our family of 5 (kids aged 12/7/7). One piece of advice conditions were quite windy at end of July which I think is quite common at this time of year so perhaps go for longer if you want to do lots of activities as some days it was harder to go out due to rough seas. Go now before the island changes for ever!

Wow this place is a slice of heaven! We had a spacious and very comfortable bungalow overlooking the ocean and turtles popped up right in front of us. The snorkelling directly in front of the resort is fantastic. Food is delicious and offered us a welcome change from basic Indonesian fare. Jun and Ana are so helpful with arranging trips and we loved seeing around the island by motorbike and going to Kakaban and Sangalaki islands to swim with jellyfish and see baby turtles. Most of the westerners staying on the island stay here so we met lots of lovely people from all over the world. Safe and relaxed swimming with no strong currents and other boats from other resorts bring their guests to dive here as best spots on island. Can’t recommend this place enough! Try the fish lemak, fish and chips with a difference, lots of vegetarian options and pancakes. We stayed three weeks here! Jun arranged transport for me and my family from Berau by car then 1.5 hours in speed boat. Easier trip than we imagined. There’s a small plane from the island to Tarakan but need to be on standby for that. We were lucky and flight was superb experience.

Jun and Ana are the best hosts at this lovely guesthouse on the stunning, beautiful and, as yet, still unspoilt island. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the food delicious, big portions too. You can snorkel straight from the guesthouse with a drop-off a short distance out. You can see tutles from the restaurant overlooking the beach and we saw manta rays whilst snorkeling out to the drop-off. Jun will go out of his way to organise trips round the island, including a bright blue swimming cave / hole in the ground, boat trips to see non stinging jellyfish, whale sharks, baby black tip reef sharks etc. Remember, all trips are weather dependent and the sea can get rough, so you will need to be patient and allow enough time. Alovely place to relax, unwind and see incredible nature on your doorstep.

Had a incredible 10 night stay at the guesthouse. Amazing snorkeling right out front with a ton of marine life. I have over 200 dives around SE Asia and the snorkeling at maratua is better than most dive sites I’ve been to. Diving is phenomenal too. The channel and east wall dive sites are almost Raja Ampat level. We stayed in the ocean front bungalow. It’s rustic but very comfortable with soft mattress and air con. Jin and his wife Hanna were amazing hosts and fun to chat with. Food was delicious and filling. We had a magical time here and plan to come back as soon as we can. If you love marine life, staying at this guesthouse is a must. They have the best house reef and ocean front on the island.

As a solo traveller, I wanted a place to stay that had a homey and welcoming feel. Jun, Ana and Hattan’s place felt exactly like that. They were incredibly accommodating, cooked great food and were a joy to be around. The room I stayed in was facing the ocean and the views were incredible, laying out on the porch in the hammock with a book. As mentioned by many others, you get to witness turtles feeding on the grass every morning at the front of the resort whilst having breakfast. By the afternoon, you can walk right out and snorkel to see amazing coral, fish and more turtles! The room had everything I needed to be comfortable. Jun helps to organise day trips to other islands and has motorbikes for hire that you can use to see the island. I loved my stay here and would definitely recommend Maratua Guesthouse to anyone!

What a wonderful surprise to find this place. 1st the food is fantastic, I’m not a fussy eater but one of our group is and she loved everything also. Great portions and delicious. 2nd the water and reef right out front is the best on the island. So good in fact divers from derawan island come right out front for paid dives that you get for free day in day out. 3rd turtles, so many turtles. The sea life out front is so diverse it’s just incredible. Listen to the owner Jun about snorkeling times and where to cruise around to with his rental scooters. I had a blast would bring others here in a heartbeat. The accommodation is just fine, rustic cabins either in the jungle or on the seashore. It’s not fancy but it’s definitely a hidden gem

The owner is very friendly and is definitely someone who loves and cares for nature, he will give you the best advices to see all the marine wildlife. The homemade food is excellent, the bungalows are confortable and sea turtles swim right in front of the main building. We had what we came for and even more !

The hotel has two settings for dwellings. A group of dwelling houses build along the sea front and another group is set inside the jungle with jungle view and a lake. The restaurant offers great view toward the sea where turtles are constantly visible there. An excellent choice for a hide away holiday.
