Detailed Reviews
I had the chance to spend a week diving with Fuvahmulah Central Dive Center while staying at their hotel. Everything was perfect, no complaints at all.
Regarding the dives, the guides were helpful, friendly, and experienced. They took into account everyone's wishes and gave us unforgettable moments, making us feel safe. A thousand thanks to them! Diving with tiger sharks is a unique experience not to be missed! Additionally, the marine biologist was kind enough to give us a presentation on the behavior of these creatures—very interesting! The boat had everything we needed on board to create unforgettable memories!
Our experience at the hotel was equally exceptional: impeccable service, clean and spacious rooms, and the meal-inclusive option made our lives so much easier! A special shout-out to Aslam, with whom we had a lot of laughs, and who kindly took us for a mud bath in the natural park, another excellent memory from our stay!
Thank you to Hassan for his outstanding work as a manager. He allowed us to experience a five-star vacation, and we can’t wait to return!

Hotel's Favourite
I booked an entire diving package for Dhangethi and Fuvahmulah through Hassan and his team at Fuvahmulah Central Dive Center. If you’re going to spend a lot of money on a ‘once in a lifetime’ trip like this, then you’ll probably want to know details, so here goes… I’ll provide an honest review with the ups and downs (though there’s not many of the latter).
From the moment I first contacted Hassan he was very responsive, and always was in the build up to my holiday. This was both via WhatsApp and email, and I really appreciated the speed and clarity of the information provided and questions answered.
I explained to Hassan what I was looking for, and was quite rigid on dates. He built a package around that, which was 3 nights in Dhangethi and 4 nights in Fuvahmulah. Hassan and the Fuvahmulah Central Dive Center (FCDC) team took care of everything.
On arrival at Male I went to the counter that I was instructed to in advance, where I was expected and warmly greeted. I was quickly shown to the speedboat and was on my way very soon. No hanging around at the airport, which I’ve encountered in the past. The speedboat accommodates about 50 passengers and is indeed speedy. The only downside was that it was almost full by the time I got on it, so I had to sit next to the Captain. That sounds fun but in reality is the bounciest and most uncomfortable seat on the boat! Still, better that then waiting round for the next one.
At Dhangethi harbour I was greeted by the Manager of the guesthouse I was staying at. My bags were whisked away and we took the 5 minute stroll to guesthouse. Banyan Villa is lovely. Quite simple as you’d expect from what I’d say is a 3* guest house, and perfectly clean with a good shower, comfy bed, and a fancy jacuzzi bath that I didn’t get round to trying. The wi-fi was good, and I enjoyed the 3 meals a day that I ate there.
As instructed, I met Shalley the Dive instructor at South Ari Dive Center that evening. We filled in the forms and I left my equipment with him. The following day I took the short walk from the guesthouse back to the harbour and off we went. Although I’d booked 4 dives on Dhangethi as part of the package, I’d said when I met Shalley I’d be keen for 3 dives each day and they were very happy to provide this. Both days, I was the only diver. That meant 1-2-1 guided dives, and the full team was professional and very good at why they do.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see any Mantas or Whale Sharks. I don’t think we even tried to find Whale Sharks – i.e. none of the dive spots I was taken to had even a slim chance of seeing them. Perhaps it was the wrong time of year, but even my confirmation emails said ‘including Whale Shark and Manta dives’ so it was a bit disappointing to seemingly not even try.
On the other hand we did one dive to a Manta cleaning station. They didn’t show up, but I can’t blame the dive center for that! That’s often how it goes with diving.
I’ve been spoiled in the past with Maldivian diving. I’ve been to a few resort islands and been on a Liveaboard. Therefore, without Whale Sharks or Mantas, I’d describe the diving I did in Dhangethi as ‘average’. Of course, it’s amazing, but a high bar has been set by my other experiences. Dhangethi is tiny too, with 3-4 pleasant but standard restaurants, and of course no bars. There’s very little to do other than dive, and therefore I find it hard to recommend. That said, others will be luckier than I, and if I were to return, I would dive with South Ari Dive School again 100%.
Taking the afternoon speedboat back to Male (Hulmale really), I got a proper seat this time and the boat was quiet. I had a few hours to kill before my late night domestic flight to Fuvahmulah. If you are in need of a few beers in between dry islands, then the Hulmale Airport Hotel is a stone’s throw from the terminals…
Checking in was a breeze and the flight was on time and efficient. I arrived in Fuvahmulah at around 1am and again, a member of the team was waiting for me and I was quickly whisked off to the Fuvahmulah Central Hotel. We quickly unpacked my gear and that was taken away and I was off to bed. 5 hours later I was picked up for my first day’s diving…
Again the Fuvahmulah Central Hotel is a perfectly functioning guest house. It has the necessities. The constant building work on the property next door late into the evening is a disturbance, but just about tolerable. I had a room on the top (2nd floor) which has a communal balcony area that I enjoyed sitting on at dusk (it’s too hot for most of the rest of the day).
Onto the diving then. Nikita, Petr and Irina are all wonderful, as is the crew of the boat. I was diving with 2-3 other divers each day, so a small group. The boat is fine, plenty big enough for a small group like this, and could easily accommodate a few more. The team looks after everything in terms of changing tanks, rinsing kit at the end of the day and it appearing in place the following morning, etc.
I’d say the standard diving in Fuvahmulah is better than in Dhangethi. But of course, what I really went for is the guaranteed Tiger Shark diving – and it did not disappoint!!
Every day the dive schools organise themselves into a rota so that each dive school gets a 30 minute slot at the Tiger site, which is well organised and respected. That means that you are with the Tigers, your dive group, and your instructors. Instead then of being with 20 others all clambering over each other, for me there was just 3 divers and two guides. It was an incredible experience. The guides watch from behind, and look after you in case an inquisitive shark shows too much interest. Nonetheless, it is still a very up close and personal experience!
Hassan had organised my early morning flight from Fuvahmulah back to Male. Yet again, it was as smooth as can be. I was helped with my luggage, driven to the airport, and the flight took off on time.
I haven’t mentioned many of the people I came across on this adventure. And that’s because, suffice to say, all Maldivians are warm, friendly, helpful, polite, genuine and lovely. Every one of them. They are a wonderful nation of people and I cannot speak highly enough of them. I did not have one single negative experience with anyone at all that I encountered.
This wasn’t a luxurious trip. But for a total cost that included accommodation, full board meal basis, speedboat, internal return flight, 13 dives, and all transfers and transport, I paid less than USD 2,000. That’s about the same cost as one or two nights on one of the resort islands (not including diving).
Having the comfort and convenience of Hassan having organised every last detail of my trip was fantastic. I just couldn’t have done that myself. If this is your first time doing something like this, I highly recommend asking him to do the same for you. He will tailor to your needs and wants.
If I do this again, then I would consider a different approach. But with hindsight, I would still have done what I did this first time – you need a bit of experience before embarking on your own planning!
So what would I change? To be honest I wouldn’t go back to Dhangethi. But if I did, I would definitely dive with South Ari Dive School. I would also book without full board meal basis. Probably just B&B, and then spend more time exploring the local meal options (I actually did this in Fuvahmulah, rather than using the restaurant included since it didn’t look good). If I had more money to spend, I might consider other accommodation options, but as I say, these two were absolutely fine and very good value.
I can’t emphasise enough how grateful I am to Hassan and everyone else involved in my holiday. There was 100’s of opportunities for things to fall short of expectations, or something to go badly wrong, or for any form of negative experience, and not a single thing did. It’s a credit to the entire team.
I can highly recommend Hassan, Fuvahmulah Central Dive Center, South Ari Dive Center and Banyan Villas. Thank you again to you all for a fabulous week in your company.

It was a wonderful trip for me because it was my first time going to the Maldives, and what gave me a wonderful addition to this experience was the Fuvahmulah Central Hotel, which has a wonderful view and excellent rooms, and they were of wonderful spaces. I am reluctant to write a review.. I want to keep the place secret so no one goes and they will never be full and I can go whenever I please.
I was told to delete everything I saw before in Maldives and for the two days I was there.. I did.
Having lived in the country a while, I have seen resorts from 3* to 5*+, I have seen local islands, guest houses, Male’ and its surrounding islands and I cannot compare Fuvahmulah to anything I have seen here in Maldives. It is, as they say ‘Uniquely Different’.
I traveled alone and felt perfectly safe, I can’t agree with the comment that the staff are more focused on Honeymooners and couples.
Flights are now twice daily, some via Gan, I flew with Flyme and as always cannot fault the service. The flight was approximately 1hr and as you approach Fuvahmulah you understand the one island, one atoll concept. There is literally nothing around. You can’t see other resorts, local islands with communication masts, it’s completely isolated and in the middle of nowhere. I think this explains the community feel on the island. They have to rely on each other and be self sufficient.
The welcome I received was ‘Welcome Home’ and I am already planning to be welcomed back home before the end of the year.
The staff are a strong team, they are all from 5 star resort backgrounds so are keen to give the best service and a luxury feel what is in fact a local island. They have their heads screwed on and are focused on giving the best service and are genuinely proud of their island. Sadly some aspects of Maldives for me now feel greedy. Viluxer was a refreshing change, they are all so driven to showcase their island.
The emails prior to my visit were handled by Thasneef and my ‘host’ during the stay was Zafar with Lonu as my designated driver, I think without these people, my stay would not have been the same.
I was treated to a tour around the island… shown every beach, lake, heritage site possible.. I think two days were nowhere near enough.
They are trying at the moment to get an area of beach to be used for their guests, this would be an advantage but I also like that the island is not ‘touristy’ at all. Viluxer Retreat is one of three properties there so far, two opening very soon. They are similar, good quality décor and such a strong team working together that I cannot imagine how these guys will not make a success of it.
The room was better than many resorts I have stayed, the bed was like sleeping on a cloud. There was AC, a safe, TV, small mini bar fridge, tea & coffee, rain shower and free wifi. The room was serviced twice a day. There were fresh local fruits in the room. Fuvahmulah is growing a lot of its own produce any almost every house had it’s own mango tree.
For the active, the guys love surfing and diving so would be happy to keep you entertained. They have excursions and dining options too. I was very well looked after by their chef, Luthufee. On a local island you start to expect the same kind of food but they are really lucky to have him on-board and he made every meal a banquet!
Overall, the stay was unforgettable. After being here a while, I didn’t think I could still be wow’ed. The people make this place stand out and the effortless service makes you feel like you are in a 5* resort on local island prices.
I urge anyone thinking to visit to just go and see for yourselves.

We have been only three days in Fuvahmulah, but it has been the best experience in our honeymoon. A virgin island with local people and great activities.
We have stayed in Viluxer retreat, a small and confortable guest house in front of the beach. Their rooms are warm and new, built with pleasant materials like wood on the roof. A big bath and small details like coffee maker, tea maker, mini bar and some snacks which make your stay easier.
During low tide it is very pleasant walk on the reef looking the diferent kinds of sea animals, and always with the palm trees near you.
To be able to discover the island, you can rent a car, a motorcycle or bike, this will permit you to know the real live in the island and find real experiences and at the same time romantic.
We had the possibility to have dinner with a local and friendly family, a lunch near the lake or a lobster dinner on the sea side with a romantic sunset. Also you can do all the aquatic activities that you can imagine.
If you want to live different experiences as the ones that you can live in a resort, Fuvahmulah is the site.

If you want to live different experiences as the ones that you can live in a resort, Fuvahmulah is the site.

I agree with the positive reviews about Fuvahmulah and Viluxer Retreat.
My husband and I spent 9 days at the Viluxer and I can sum up the experience for the both of us as being "a very memorable and unique experience". The welcome from the staff from the pick up at the airport to when you get to the retreat is first class. You are made to fell at home and treated so special that you want to stay longer. It is very unique to the commercialised resort experience. If you are going for a honeymoon to spend quality time with each other, need some lazy quite time and get first class treatment while in the Maldives Viluxer Retreat in Fvuvahmulah is a place I would recommend. The chef is great you don't have to look at the clock and worry about the kitchen closing before you have your breakfast, Lunch or dinner. You can come down at your leisure for your meals. Thank you to all the staff members at the Viluxer for making our trip memorable. Hope to see you again sometime in the future Insha-Allah.
Enjoy

Visiting the Maldives for the first time we wanted to feel the local life and culture that you do not get the chance to experience in the luxury resort islands.
Viluxer Retreat is a lovely small hotel (currently the only one on the island of Fuvahmulah) with amazing staff that will make sure you have marvellous stay every minute you spend on the island.
Our incredible experience started from the moment we made the booking. Email replies come fast and all staff are willing to make any arrangements requested. It takes about an hour to reach the resort from Male by plane and 5 minutes to reach the hotel from the airport. We were welcomed by the Viluxer Team with flowers and fresh coconut drink and we were offered a tour of the island to get an idea about local life. Rooms are very cosy and beds comfortable. The bathroom with sky view makes the place even more exotic. Wi-Fi is a plus. But what really makes the difference is the staff!!! Thanseef, Ismael, Yasir and the rest of the team tried their best and made our stay really comfortable!
There are several activities offered by the hotel (like snorkelling, wind surfing, beach dinner…etc) We enjoyed a lovely romantic dinner on the beach prepared with fresh local ingredients and a very tasty sea food barbecue. The team made their best to surprise us with amazing set up on the beach and they succeeded!!!
In all, Viluxer Retreat is worth visiting as it gives you the chance to feel the real Maldivian hospitality offered by the most cordial people that can really make everything happen!!!

If you want to truly relax and experience the local life of the Maldives then Viluxer is a great place to start. As the only island atoll in Maldives and lying just below the equator the island of Fuvahmulah is a special place and Viluxer offers visitors a great base from which to explore the second largest island in the country.
The rooms are large and spacious with wooden floors and ceilings and a modern shower and toilet en suite. It was great to have free Wifi with a strong signal in the room and facilities for making tea and coffee plus fridge/minibar. There was an extra large comfortable bed and a small verandah and everything was fresh and new.
Breakfast was taken at the nearby Lake House restaurant which was a lovely treat and there are several other local restaurants for lunch and dinner, although the menus are limited. I was provided with a bicycle to get around the island and it's a nice way to travel and meet local people. They are in the process of establishing a private beach area at the delightful Thundi a 10/15 minute ride away but until they do I suggest you dress appropriately to avoid offending the local people.
Yasir the manager was extremely helpful and friendly and ensured that I had anything I needed as well as offered useful advice and a taxi service when necessary. Although there are things in progress and some facilities stilll being organised as this is a new venture for both the owners and the island, I would still recommend Viluxer for anyone who wants to leave the flashy resorts behind and truly get away from it all!

Spent 10 days at Viluxer in March and April 2014 and had a great stay. I have been traveling in the Maldives for a few years now and can say without hesitation that Fuvahmulah and Viluxer are my absolute favorites. Viluxer is a small 4 room guest house situated directly across the street from the ocean and just a few hundred meters from several restaurants and shops. The entire house has been redecorated and renovated in a very hip modern style that still maintains its warmth and cozy atmosphere. All rooms are spacious with King beds, great A/C, minibar, and huge bathrooms with rainwater showers. Very clean and comfortable. The hotel has a small cafe on the back patio that serves breakfast in the morning. Coffee and tea are served all day long and special dinners can be prepared upon request. The grilled fish dinner that Yasir and his staff prepare is delicious and is not to be missed.
Fuvahmulah is easily the most beautiful island in the Maldives with lush greenery, two large inland lakes, and a sandy beach on the North end with unique pebble sand. People are friendly and you should not be surprised if a local randomly offers to take you on a scooter tour of the island free of charge. Added bonus for Viluxer is the incredible local knowledge and connections the staff has throughout the island. Many of the staff surf and can act as guides to the many spots available on the island. Great place to surf, dive, fish, or just disconnect for a while. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

It's correct that you have a chance to see tiger shark, thresher sharks along with a great deal of aquatic life. Mantas and dolphins are not uncommon. We are a very untouched island and recent divers have been very impressed with the coral and reefs here.
Our island is locally known as the most beautiful island in the Maldives because of the large lakes, range of unique beaches and community atmosphere. We offer all guests an island tour on arrival or the following morning and additional excursions and activities can be arranged accordingly to your wishes.
We are sure you will have a memorable stay with us in Fuvahmulah and look forward to receiving your mail in order to send our photo's for you.
Best Regards
Viluxer Team
Dear Wendy,
Thank you for your questions.
Transfers to Fuvahmulah are a scenic 1hr 10 minute domestic flight. We will arrange these for you. The rate is currently US$272.00 plus 12% GST. I would recommend booking a flight landing into Male' in the afternoon as currently the domestic departure from Male' is in the evening.
Half Board and Full Board are available for a small supplement. Our onsite restaurant ' Hathaa Ease' serves both local and Italian cuisine.
Scuba diving and snorkeling are both possible here in Fuvahmulah. Diving is particularly unique due to the presence of tiger sharks and thresher sharks. The reef can be accessed from the sea when the water is calm and also by boat.
Visit our Facebook page for some of our recent diving photo's. 'Viluxer Hotels - Fuvahmulah'.
We hope to welcome you to Fuvahmulah for your Maldives stay,
Best Regards
Viluxer Team
