The Talbot Hotel Carlow garners compliments for its friendly staff and prime location, convenient for both parking and exploring nearby attractions like The Dome. While the hotel's amenities, including a pool and family-friendly activities, are well-received, guests have called out the need for updates and improved cleanliness in some areas. Opinions on the rooms are mixed; they are often described as spacious and comfortable, yet some visitors mention dated decor and issues with upkeep. Despite the positive atmosphere, concerns over value for money, particularly regarding room quality and breakfast offerings, are noted by several travelers.

We came to Ireland to travel and to visit our son who was studying at Carlow College. We came for one night at the beginning of our trip, and then for two nights at the end of our trip.

Comparing the Talbot Hotel to the others in which we stayed during out travels, the Talbot is excellent. The rooms are spacious, with plenty of space to move around without feeling cramped. The beds were extremely comfortable and the duvets were warm and fluffy. I really like that they were cognizant of sustainability by having soap and shampoo dispensers in the bathroom. My only suggestion would to be to have a separate conditioner dispenser versus just having am "all-in-one" shampoo/conditioner dispenser, because even though it says "all-in-one," it doesn't really work for conditioner.

The breakfasts were wonderful. There was a large variety of fruits, cereals, juices, cheeses, meats, and yogurts in addition to a full hot Irish breakfast. They even poached my eggs for me instead of the typical fried egg. I really appreciated that. (If you could tell the lady on the hot food line for me how much I appreciated that, I would be grateful).

We used the pool and the hot tub. The locker rooms were clean and the pool was very inviting. My husband was able to swim laps and I enjoyed the hot tub as well.

Dear Guest, Thank you so much for your 5 star review. I am delighted to see you visited us lately to see your son, I do hope you enjoyed Carlow and of course seeing your son. Our rooms certainly do offer that extra space and I am glad you enjoyed having the large room. We put a lot of emphasis on our bedding to ensure a good sleep quality here at The Talbot. I will take your comments on board re the addition of conditioner to rooms, a valid point. I will make the team aware of your comments re breakfast and again thank you for your lovely comments here. Thank you again for visiting and I do hope we have the pleasure of welcoming you back again soon when in Ireland. Kind Regards, Daniel McCarthy, General Manager.

My wife and I availed of bed, breakfast and evening meals at the Talbot Hotel Carlow between Monday 26th June, 2023 and Thursday 29th June, 2023. The receptionist was very friendly, helpful, courteous and professional when booking us in. We were allocated a large, bright and airy room on the third flood with a view over the lush country side. The bed was very comfortable and we had a very enjoyable and comfortable stay. The meals at the Talbot Hotel were first class and the restaurant staff were very friendly, helpful and courteous. The Talbot Hotel is located on the verge of Carlow town. We received a copy of the Irish Independent each morning which was deeply appreciated. There was dressing gowns and disposable slippers in our room. There was also two bottles of water and finger food on arrive which was a very nice gesture by management. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Talbot Hotel and we received excellent value for money. There is amply parking facilities at the front and read of the hotel. I have no hesitation in highly recommending the Talbot Hotel, Carlow. Well done to the management and staff.

My family have just finished our weekend break here. The hotel is very spacious and prepared for all covid restrictions. There are numerous sanitisation stations throughout the hotel with sanitizer on every table in the bistro bar. The rooms have all you'd need and are a decent size with comfortable beds. The staff here need to be praised they are so helpful and polite nothing is to big a job for them and constantly make sure their guests are being looked after. We only ate in the bistro bar whilst here the chicken and chorizo tagliatelle, chicken Ceasar salad and pizza are amazing we weren't impressed with the chicken wings not like the spicy Frank's wings you'd get in most restaurants . The price of the food and drinks are what you'd see in most hotels. The hotel has a pool and a dome center for entertaining kids which is great, the dome center is priced fairly too. The hotel is located right beside a retail park with a few shops like dunnes and Mr price incase you've forgotten anything. The only thing I'd have something negative to comment on would be the cleanliness of the changing rooms/ toilets for the pool area they defo need to be monitored more frequently but saying that we still used the pool everyday it didn't stop us. We would definitely return again to this hotel for a stay.

We selected the Talbot Hotel Carlow based on a wedding recommendation. While our room was prepared upon arrival, many others were not available until after 4 pm. Unfortunately, the rooms showed signs of wear and cleanliness issues, including hair in several areas. Additionally, the extra bed we'd requested for our party of four was missing.

On the positive side, the pool area was enjoyable, and the staff were helpful. A Spanish-speaking server at the bar was particularly accommodating. However, the food, despite being served in generous portions, was mediocre. Manager Derrick made inappropriate comments and did not prepare drinks correctly, leading to an uncomfortable experience.

Conversely, the kids club in the dome was fantastic, with James doing an excellent job looking after the children. The hotel arranged a room for a family quiz, which we used responsibly and appreciated.

After our quiz, we returned to the bar and encountered further rudeness from Derrick regarding the presence of children in the bar. Unbeknownst to us, kids were not allowed, but the manager's approach was extremely rude, confronting the groom abruptly. We needed some time to get the children back to their rooms, during which Derrick continued creating a scene, aggressively demanding that the children be removed immediately. The groom, trying to prevent a scene, quietly attempted to converse with Derrick, who loudly told him to stay away, even though the groom remained calm. This incident significantly marred our evening, prompting us to consider checking out the following day.

The next morning, breakfast was disappointing: dirty trays, greasy food, and unclean tables did not justify its cost. After spending €230 for the room, this was not what we had anticipated. Consequently, I would not choose to stay at this hotel again.

Dear Lisa, Thank you for your review and for choosing to stay at Talbot Hotel Carlow. I am quite taken aback by your comments, all of which I will address here. Our check in time is 4pm, this is stated in your confirmation email which you would have received prior to arrival. I have checked our logs from our room checks which we carry out and also checked our customer requests and notes, none of which mention cleanliness issues in the room in question. I will however follow up on your request for an extra bed as this would always be in place upon arrival. Good to see you found the pool enjoyable and Ruth to be accommodating in the Bar. I will note your comments re food, we served in excess of 300 main courses in our main bar on the day in question all of which received fantastic feedback. I will of course take your comments on board here. I am delighted James was such a positive, he is fantastic with our kids club and regularly gets excellent feedback. Derrick is one of our best Managers, a very positive person who regularly goes above and beyond for our guests and indeed our team. I find it extremely unfair for him to be scrutinized on a public platform as I hope you can appreciate is not nice to see after a busy weekend. On the night in question Derrick was doing his job as he usually does and was upholding the laws we must abide by in not allowing minors in our main bar after hours. I have spoken with Derrick at length about this situation and have reviewed CCTV footage of this time period. We abide by the licensing laws in our operation and at no point did Derrick feel he was by any way rude but was simply requesting Children be taken from the bar area. Again I will take your points on board re breakfast and will discuss with the team. We had in excess of 200 guest for breakfast on Sunday morning which I hope you can appreciate there will be busy periods within this and again had very positive feedback. Disappointed to hear you wont return, I know our Management team went out of their way on Saturday night to arrange the quiz room for your group and were more than accommodating. Kind Regards, Daniel McCarthy, General Manager.

Have stayed in the hotel several times before, but found some things had changed and not for the better. All of the staff were friendly most of the time we were there and really looked after us. We were on the 4th floor, our room was nice, but the carpet on the corridor was in bad condition. We stayed for 2 nights and despite putting a sign on our door for the room to be serviced it was not done.
The restaurant on the 4th floor is closed and food is served in the bar. I much preferred the atmosphere when the restaurant was opened. Our food on both nights was very good, only complaint was the beer battered onion rings were not made fresh and were like the frozen ones from Iceland.
When we stayed here in the past there was always a night porter who would get residents a drink after closing time. We did not look for a late drink but I did see a couple who were residents refused a drink at 12.33 on a Friday night. Also the waiting staff had gone around every tables at 11.45 telling people it was last drinks. This is not good service in a 4 star hotel.
Breakfast on the first morning was served in the bar and was lovely with plenty of choice. On the second morning to our surprise the breakfast was served in the restaurant, we had been told by a staff member on the first night that the restaurant was closed. The 2nd breakfast experience was not good. The staff seemed very stressed and after giving our room number, we were told to find a table ourselves and a staff member would come and set the table, we were also asked if we wanted tea or coffee, we choose tea. No body came to clear or set the table, I removed the dirty dishes myself and got clean, cutlery, cups and napkins from the service station. There were no glasses for the juices, and items were missing from the hot breakfast menu. I had to ask twice before our tea arrived. The whole place just seemed Chaotic, tables full of dishes that were not been cleared and people walking around looking for a clean table. It was not the nice relaxing breakfast we were looking forward to. It's a pity as this was always a good hotel and the staff are great.

Stayed at the Hotel Talbot for a bank holiday family break. Staff all seem friendly, and having the Dome amenities adjoining the hotel for families is handy; however, our hotel stay wasn’t all as planned. I know bank holiday weekends can be busy, but as a guest we also pay higher prices for peak dates and weekends such as bank holidays, so a 1-night stay isn’t cheap. We would expect a decent hotel stay and experience for what we paid. Unfortunately, on arrival there was a long queue for check-in as from 4pm is the only option for check-in. While I queued to check in, the rest of my family had to wait at a dirty table with used glasses and leftovers, and the general lobby seemed dirty, which wasn’t a pleasant start to our stay. When we got to our room, we had to request towels from reception, as there were only 2 in the room for a family of 4 and no face cloths in the bathroom. After we settled in the room, we roamed the hotel and amenities; we couldn’t go swimming with the children as children are not allowed after 6 p.m., which was disappointing for our children when they love the pool in hotels. The hallways to the room could do with some TLC for a 4-star hotel. The breakfast room is on the 4th floor; no pre-booking is required. However, when we went for breakfast at 9:40am, we were told we’d have to wait at least 40 / 50 minutes, and breakfast was finished at 10:30. The only alternative was to take a tray of food away from the restaurant and take it to our room. Again,  this was a very disappointing experience, and many guests were showing how displeased they were and not ideal when you get children ready to leave the room for breakfast and then return again. The hotel should really offer a pre-booking of breakfast or general meal times if this is the case, as the current process is not ideal for busy times. Lastly, when we were checking our, our family car, which was parked in the hotel car park outside the door, was damaged during our stay, and whoever did the damage did not leave a note. Unfortunately, the CCTV cameras were reviewed by the hotel, who advised they could see our car in the car park but couldn’t see footage of the car being damaged, even though it was damaged during the stay. This added a stressful and disappointing end to our stay. An after-stay survey was sent to us the following day after our stay, and we submitted our thoughts like mentioned above; however, the hotel did not acknowledge or respond.

The problems started on our arrival on Sunday 29th, on arrival staff member not helpful as we were early and we knew that, until I think Sarah came on duty by 3.25pm the room was miracleyously available, 3 room later we accepted the last room we was offered thank you,1st room damaged tiles burns in carpet. 2nd room smelt of smoke.the real problem is the rooms are untidy and need refurbishment very dusty to turn of standard lamp I removed the bulb cable under bed.

Breakfast is awfull, cold food to much cooked food is inedible at times black pudding hard hash browns crispy and cold eggs,it's chace the eggs so much grease worst buffet breakfast ever, surly staff ask for canderel like asking for gold dust curt remarks.

Kept awake Sunday till 2 am young kids shouting, fighting, playing room disgusting.
People wandering up and down corridors singing dancing rooms are paper thin.

Good points food in the restaurant is lovely not to dear drinks the same, staff are friendly and attentive.

I would never stay here again or recommend it to anyone. Pool area needs a dam good clean.

Dear Tony, Thank you for your review, I have investigated this thoroughly and we have also spoken in depth on checkout. To clarify, I continue to feel our team did all in their power to ensure your stay was satisfactory but unfortunately it seems we still could not reach your expectation. I know our team looked after you with a complimentary meal as a gesture on your arrival day and checked in with you on numerous occasions throughout your stay to ensure all was in order. We operate our hotel well and I know I have discussed all above points with you. Hopefully you find an acceptable hotel on the remainder of your trip. Kind Regards, Daniel McCarthy, General Manager.

Having last stayed here christmas 2021, we decided to return for this st patrick’s weekend along with our two children, my parents, sister and niece. It was the worst decision we ever made. In the space of a couple of years the hotel has really gone downhill. We walked in the door and were instantly hit with a repungent smell and a run down lobby. We were advised our room would not be ready until 4pm but we could use the facilities. We had three rooms booked and one was ready so we left our belongings in the room and headed to the bar. From the moment we walked in we were made to feel unwelcome. the manager and staff were running around placing reserved signs on tables for 6.15, it was about 3pm! bearing in mind there is nowhere else to sit in the hotel, I think this was ridiculous. They have closed the restaurant since we were last there so are using the bar as a restaurant. We felt like an inconvenience, being paying customers!! We were asked if we would mind moving to a different table to facilitate a large group which we obliged and were very gracious in doing so. Didn’t make the staff any friendlier.Apart from Sam ,who was chatty and pleasant, we found the staff rude and definitely didn’t provide service with a smile! The barman was the rudest i had ever come across. glasses were dirty. My husband found something floating in his drink and he returned it,again met with rudeness from the barman. Kids had to leave the bar at 10pm, we were not advised this on booking, nor were we advised this when being called to confirm our reservation and book in for dinner. i understand smaller children running around is not acceptable but these were well behaved older children sitting listening to the musician playing and scrolling on their phones. We went to an overcrowded lobby where there was nowhere to sit but in a cold doorway and ended up having to go back to our rooms. Not the nice family night away we had planned! The hallways and stairs stank of stale smoke and beer. The carpets were absolutely filthy. This is definitely not a 4 star hotel, it’s more like a 1 star hostel!! We would not recommend this hotel and certainly will never return. Avoid at all costs!

We stayed at the Talbot Hotel with our 5 month old and 2 year old. Upon checking out we went into the bar for some lunch, with the heat and two upset babies we left our babys bottle flask behind. My partner rang the hotel yesterday & we were told they couldnt see it but theyd ring back. A few minutes passed & we got a call to say yes it was there, that it would be at reception and could we come to collect it? My partner explained we would but that we were in Limerick and with the thunder storms we didnt think we'd get back down to collect, which we didnt. We got a phone call today to tell us our flask was still there & would we be collecting it? My partner said yes and before he could say another word, the lady that rang didnt seem impressed and said "well you said you'd be here yesterday for it".. We explained its nearly a 2 hour drive from our home to the hotel and nearly 2 hours back again and with two young kids our days are busy. Id understand the call if it was something big that was in the way... The heavy rain with thunder and lightning that we have and my partner has to travel down & back up because this lady made us feel like we needed to collected it today. I overlooked all the small things in our room like a very dirty sink, loads of dirt under the bed when we moved it a bit, those things i could of complained about but i didnt, my burnt steak that i got at dinner with the under cooked veg that i could of complained about, but this call this morning took the biscuit.... Its not a hotel i would return to especially after the call this morning. Some staff are lovely. Cleaners need to be shown how to actually clean right and Sarah on reception needs an update on her customer service skills..

My wife and I stayed at the Talbot Hotel Carlow on 11th/12th November, 2021 and we availed of bed, breakfast and dinner. The staff were very friendly, helpful and courteous. From the time we arrived until we booked out we received excellent service. The receptionist could not be more helpful. The room was spotless and the meals were excellent. We were allocated a large room on the third floor with a beautiful view of the country side. I have no hesitation in recommending the Talbot Hotel, Carlow as the service is first class and the hotel is beautiful. We will certainly stay at the Talbot again in the near future. We had an excellent nights sleep and there was not a sound to disturb us despite the fact that the hotel was very busy with a wedding reception on Thursday night 11th November. Well done to the management and staff at the Talbot Hotel, Carlow.
