My partner and I travelled to Alpe D’Huez on the 30th of March and we had a fantastic stay at Grandes Rousses Hotel & Spa.

Room
Initially we had booked a classic room and once we checked in we were very disappointed as it did not align with our expectations from the pictures. Mainly because the room was very dark and lacking natural light. Also the wardrobe was in bathroom which we found very strange and not suitable to keep our clothes. We returned to reception and the receptionist was very polite and looked to see if there was an alternative room available. After consulting with a manager we were shown to a triple room which was south facing and much more aligned with our expectations and we gladly accepted this new room. The manager who showed us to this room was very polite and professional. Changing to this room hugely improved our room as everyday we woke to a beautiful view of the village and mountains. We can’t thank the hotel enough for moving us to this room. In future I would automatically book a triple room for the extra space, we had 3 suitcases so needed it. Or a panoramic room / superior.

Check in experience
We drove and upon arrival the the hotel porter unloaded our car and once we checked in brought our luggage up to our room and also came to move our luggage to the new room. We were also given a tour of the hotel by the receptionist and explained all that was available. It was very smooth and professional.

Bar
Decorated to a high standard with a wide variety of food/snack and drinks. Good wine menu and a sommelier on hand to assist if needed. Service was a little slow but quality of food/drink was very good and staff very polite.

Restaurant
We ate in l'Esperance and the food was very high quality and service was very good. As expected for a 5 star hotel.

Breakfast
Breakfast was fantastic, a wide range of all food you could want before a day on the slope. Fresh fruit, cakes, pastries, breads, cold hand & cheeses, bacon, sausage, egg etc. Wide range of fresh juices. Overall we were very happy and couldn’t have asked for more.

This week was extra special for my partner and I as I proposed one of the days out on the slopes. I had also brought with me some decorations for the room which the hotel concierge happily assisted me in decorating the room with the rose petals and balloons I had provided. I also asked for a bottle of Champagne to be waiting in the room upon our return, which it was, a lovely bottle of Blanc de Blancs. So again, thank you very much to the hotel staff for making our stay extra special.

Overall I highly recommend Grandes Rousses, it lives up to its 5* rating and we look forward to returning again in the future.

This hotel is ideally located with a ski hire shop within the building, a lift just over the road and the option to ski in and out. It is attractively appointed especially the bar and restaurant and there is a fun outdoor pool, jacuzzi and sauna on the roof included in the price and an indoor spa for an extra charge. This is our second visit and the main attraction for our return was the restaurant menu which is sadly a shadow of it's former excellent self. The menu was limited, repetitive, decidedly odd at times and the service was remarkably slow. The second restaurant appeared to be closed and the bar only serves mixed plates of ham or cheese. Breakfast was OK although we had to give up entirely on any prospect of a decent cup of tea and there was no kettle in our room, only a coffee maker. The only tea bags available throughout the hotel were outstanding in their ability to transmit almost no flavour or colour to hot water. Tea drinkers beware and bring your own teabags.

A return to the hotel for a second year in succession. Our previous stay we were located in the newer section of the property. This year we were allocated a room in the original building, where there was a notable difference in the standard of decor. This apart the hotel is still of a good standard, with very attentive and friendly staff. The reception staff, in particular Lina, was most helpful in booking dinner reservations. A recommendation if eating out you will need reservations within the resort.
The outdoor pool, hot tub and sauna are a welcome area of recovery at the end of a ski day.
Staff in both restaurants are knowledgeable and helpful.
The rooms were cleaned to a good level as often as requested, with any housekeeping matters attended to promptly.
Be mindful if reserving a Duplex room that the stairs to the upper level are steep and narrow.
The hotel is well located for access to the slopes through varying tows / lifts and ski in routes.

This hotel is in a great location and has really good facilities but the overall experience is not that of a 5 star hotel. The general feel is that the staff and management are really trying but missing on the fundamentals of what makes a top hotel. The service was friendly but ultimately lacked the delivery standards that you would expect at a 5 star hotel. We often had to ask for things twice and sometimes 3 times for them to happen. The food and beverage offering was pretty strange and limited and the wait time to get served things like drinks in the bar was often very long. The staff are friendly but not really on it in a way that you would expect - there are often empty and finished plates from other diners for example just sitting in trays around the bar waiting for someone else to pick them up. The pool area is great but you can’t get a drink there without really having to search someone down. The maid service and room cleaning was sporadic and although it did happen every day it happened at random times and sometimes not until 6pm meaning that you might go out skiing all day and still come back to a room that hasn’t been cleaned or made up in all that time. Ultimately as per my review the hotel is ok but due to the service levels not a truly top option.

We were only here for one night as a birthday treat for my son and were due to return in February for a ski week. On arrival we we were told our rooms were not ready (fair enough as we were early but I had advised we would be), shrug of shoulders and told it might be ready by 16:00. Sent to Pool area to wait where we asked for some food from the restaurant (I only wanted a plate of chips and some drinks for the children) but advised it was closed. Fifteen minutes later food arrived for another family so presumably chef could not be bothered. Returned to check in at 16:00 and told one room was now ready out of two we had booked. So half checked in and went out to the town looking for a late lunch. Returned at 18:00 and after another 20 min wait and confusion around allocation of rooms (check in at third attempt seemed to come as a surprise) finally got all we had booked. I then went for final trip to the pool before dinner to relax. Got there to find no towels and on asking the pool/bar staff for help or whether they could arrange for some to be delivered to the pool area where they are normally kept was advised to go to reception in my swimming gear as in the words of the bar staff "it was not their job...". I jokingly asked if it was mine which they found amusing and at which point I decided I would never return here again. Have since cancelled my February trip with some relief. It is a shame as the building itself is nice and the location very good. Just very poorly managed.

Extremely comfortable and stylish hotel right by the lifts that travel to the slopes and you can ski back home at the end of the day. We opted for half board and the food is excellent but a little formal for our teenagers although delicious. The wines are very expensive and need more options of wines of better value to choose from.
My room on the first floor had great views of the village and mountains behind but was right above the terrace so a little noisy if you wanted to get to bed early but the bar closes at a decent time. There is an ice hockey rink in the village and that can be noisy late into the night if they hold events but overall the room was very relaxing, comfortable beds and warm.
The Ski locker and shop is in the basement so easy to rent/store skis and there is a great pool, sauna and hot tub on the roof.
We will definitely go back!

This hotel had very mixed attributes, some were very good and others really let it down and didn't justify its rating as a 5 star hotel.

The arrival was very good with a nice check in and welcome and the car parking was very convenient. In fact the valets who dealt with parking, bags and the shuttle were superb, the best members of staff at the hotel.

Concierge was mixed, sometimes they were helpful other times very dismissive and rude.

The food outlets were poor. The hotel's flagship restaurant was diabolical and the worst meal I ate in the 7 days we were in the resort. It's hard to describe quite how bad it was.

Their other restaurant (Hubert) was better but wasn't worth returning to and both restaurants were extortionate vs much better restaurants in town.

Breakfast was good to average but service was poor and the hot drinks other than tea usually came cold.

The boot room as too small and hectic at busy times which eroded some of the ski in ski out and ski shop on site benefits.

The room was one of the smallest I've had in years and for the price I expected better. It was nicely decorated but it didn't smell pleasant.

Signage in the hotel was wrong, the kids room for example has been relocated and all the signs not updated so you can't find where it is unless you ask and a few arrogant members of staff later and you may be lucky to find it.

It's a bit of a shame as the hotel has a lot of potential with a good location and nice furnishing and some great concepts like the shuttle (which they need two of really as it gets busy and the waits can be long).

Concierge also need improvement, we never got responses to some requests and others were fobbed off with lazy suggestions where they couldn't be bothered to actually help. Other times they were helpful and it was hard to know which service you'd get.

We won't be returning as it wasn't good value in our view but we had a perfectly on time.

We choose the Grand Rousses Hotel as it was one recommended by the Alp d’Huez Triathlon Organizers this year. On the day of the triathlon, they didn’t have our preordered breakfast ready (as the shuttles buses were departing at 7am, and it was a 20min walk to the bus we had to preorder), told us to leave the breakfast area even as the main breakfast was being laid out and were quite defensive of the issue at checkout (additionally adding many incorrect charges). This hotel needs to rethink its service to athletes participating in an event they promote.

Dear Sir, Thank you for taking the time to write to us about your experience at the Grandes Rousses Hotel & Spa. We are sorry that the breakfast did not live up to your expectations and please accept our sincerest apologies. As part of our partnership with the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon, our customers have been informed that we have specifically adjusted our hours to suit the needs of the athletes, opening the breakfast at 6.30am on the day of the triathlon. Under no circumstances was it planned to open the breakfast at 5.45am. What's more, a takeaway breakfast was available for those who wanted to leave earlier. We don't understand your feedback, as you were the only triathlon participant to express a negative opinion about the breakfast this year. Once again, we thank you for your comments and hope to earn your trust during your next visit. We look forward to welcoming you again. Yours sincerely Céline Cayot Hotel Manager

Reception desk staff are very kind and helpful, however just seemed a little short staffed (end of Apr 22). Bar was closed in the evening before bedtime, very disappointing as the views are spectacular from the bar lounge and restaurant. During breakfast, only one person clearing all the tables and a little overworked. Bedroom was very good and warm, slight issue was pillows weren't very supportive which affected sleep a little, however the mattress and duvet was 5 out of 5 including cleanliness/room service. Overall, I would recommend this hotel and think maybe because it was end of season we missed out on all benefits. 100% recommend the Jacuzzi, Pool and Sauna though! Despite the bad points above, it was very reasonably priced and very ideally located too by the lifts to get around town and the slopes. Thanks Hotel Grandes Rousses

We spent the week of New Year's Eve in the Grandes Rousses Hotel. It was a real 5-star-hotel experience. The staff was friendly and helpful, the lobby/bar area/restaurant was modern and cosy. The fact that the ski rental was in the hotel building itself was very comfortable.
Our room (a deluxe room for 1 adult and 2 teenagers) in the new building was as stylish as the bar. The beds (even the single bed) were really comfy with the best duvets I have ever experienced in France.
The only reason for not giving 5 stars is the price of the hotel: 30 EUR per day for the breakfast. 30 EUR per day for parking on the street in front of the hotel. 25 EUR for 1 hour for the spa. 10 EUR for a tea in the bar. Plus an expensive room rate.
I am not sure if we had enjoyed the "older" rooms in the main building as much: Their view on the mountains is better, however, the style of this building appears a bit outdated.

It has a small elevator, but I'm not sure the rooms interconnect. On their website they have suites for. 2 adults, 3 children, and 2 with 2 children. Bear in mind that since this town caters to skiers & cyclists there may not be many accommodations in stores and restaurants.
