We booked this hotel after reading the reviews and were delighted to find ourselves in such an amazingly different, small hotel - the hotel is quaint, our room had a very high ceiling and a covered terrace, very chintzy which all fits into the ambiance of this small boutique Italian hotel. We booked on Booking.com and stayed for two nights including dinner which was served on a terrace that hangs over the side of the hotel - all very atmospherical. If you were celebrating in a special location, then the hotel would certainly fit the bill. The dinners were outstanding, beautifully presented, every course a picture in itself, the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast is taken on a side terrace that also has views looking down to Lake Varese. We drove ourself to the hotel, we missed the rather small brown 'heritage' sign for 'Sacro Monte' (which is where the hotel is located), if you are planning to visit keep and eye out for the Sacro Monte sign and you will find it. There is also a bus service too. The hotel has parking, the roads are tight, our hire car was small so we managed to navigate the winding road that takes you up to the hotel. Whilst it may appear on first arrival that there isn't a lot to see, there is the amazing site of the Sacro Monte and there are also a few restaurants tucked away too. Recommended for anyone that wants to get away from the crowds and enjoy excellent food!

We have stayed At Hotel Colonne several times. Always in September or October. It is the most hospital and friendly hotel we have stayed at, and we always want to return. The village is calm, genuine and beautiful, with many possibilities of hiking in the surroundings. And the hotell with the wonderful chef and host Silvio Battistoni provides wonderful food, a breathtaking view and the kind of relaxing atmosphere one can usually just dream of.

End of May. After all the lockdowns and restrictions we needed a break. Italy is always very attractive and now that we 'discovered' this jewel of a small hotel (10 rooms) up on the Sacro Monte di Varese with its splendid view, we are anew enchanted by the regions beauty. A warm welcome, a comfortable room with a terrace, and of course the very delicious cuisine of Silvio Battistoni and a good wine selection made the 3 day stay truly wonderful. We hiked up to the once-luxurious, now abandoned Liberty Style Hotel Grande del Campo Fiore one morning and used public transport (30 min) to visit Varese the next day. All VERY much recommended

What can I say....I’m in love with Italy. My partner bought a long weekend holiday package to celebrate my birthday. When we arrived at this hotel, it was raining, so we could not see all beauty of the hotel’s surroundings. After unpacking our bags, we headed to a bar where we met a lovely guy Philip who served us the drinks and had a long chat with us. As a part of our holiday package we were entitled for one special dinner of 6 dishes prepared by Silvio Battistoni. So we had it at the first evening of our arrival. Our dinner was beautiful. My partner described a carpaccio dish as a piece of culinary art. With regards to the drinks, the restaurant didn’t meet our expectations. We thought we were going to have a wine flight with our special meal but it didn’t happen and we had to choose a bottle of wine by ourselves. Never mind. I have to mention that a coffee made by the lovely lady Vanna in the mornings was one of the best we had during that long weekend in Italy. Being in such a great place, it’s easy to discover the Sacro Monte di Varese, visit a few art galleries in Varese, explore the lakes Maggiorre and Orta. Enjoy!

The location is beautiful, high up the mountain in a very 'hilly' area with lovely scenery, overlooking a valley on the outskirts of the village of Santa Maria del Monte, a medieval UNESCO world heritage site. This small 10 bedroom hotel is right next door to the old funicular railway too. Our bedroom (No. 3) was lovely, comfortable, quaint and elegantly rustic with fabulous views from one of the best balconies I have ever had. We were half board and the evening meals were excellent (be aware if you book half board that the restaurant closes on Sunday evening and all day on Monday. We were lucky that the restaurant was unusually booked for a private party on the Sunday night that we stayed and the chef kindly agreed that we too could dine there that night, albeit with no menu choice which didn't matter...it was yet another really good dining experience). The chef's tasting menu which we enjoyed on one evening was very good indeed. Breakfast was basic but perfectly good offering breads, cold meats, cheeses (most days), hard boiled eggs, fresh fruit and yoghurts. Service in restaurant and hotel throughout our stay was very good and very friendly. I would dispute some of the description in the introduction at top of page. There was no mini-bar in our room. 24 hour room service was definitely not in evidence ..in fact after dinner on the first night we went upstairs to the bar for a drink to find that it was in semi-darkness with no-one there to serve you. Instead of perhaps playing some cards after dinner in the bar and 'bistro' area we retired to our room each night after dinner to watch something on our iPad as the tv did not seem to have any English speaking channels. I also cannot imagine where the conference facilities could possibly have been! Wi-fi in our room was good. This was though, a lovely stay and we would really love to return at another time of year. There is parking in the hotel's small car park which is essential as there is nowhere else to put your car. Hiring a car to get here from Milan Malpensa airport is essential and also to explore the area including Lake Maggiore which is about half an hour's drive away. Several other restaurants in the area, only one of which we managed to try for a lunch. We managed to pick the rainiest weekend you could imagine for our three night stay. This place would be so much lovelier without the wet and, if there was sun, it would be just amazing.

We visited at the end of September and loved it. The accommodation is best described as charming and a bit chintzy but the decor suits the hotel perfectly. We had a good sized room with a generous balcony that afforded incredible views across the valley. The history of the town is interesting and the locals are all very friendly. The food though....We were half board so had a three course meal in the evening and on one night, we had the six course tasting dinner which was exquisite. The wine list is extensive and everything that we tried was excellent. The staff were equally helpful and Mamma Vanna was such a lovely host too. Silvio Battistoni came and chatted to us and made us feel so welcome. I’d recommend visiting at the weekend as the funicular lift is open and the history around that is very interesting. Definitely hire a (small) car and bring walking shoes too! Would we go again? Absolutely!

We spent four days at Hotel Colonne on half board basis. The hotel is quirky and unusual with fantastic views over the parkland and mountains. Comfortable beds, friendly staff with first class food prepared by the owner Silvio. Easy trips to nearby lakes and the city of Varese. A great place for nature lovers👍

Nice hotel to stay for a few days.If you want to stay longer, be aware that there is nothing to do in this hotel and in the evnings. All credits for house keeping, She works on here adge to hard and is running this family hotel. For people who have a handicap, it is hard to walk mountain up-and down. The view is real nice from your balcony and room. The food is realy good, but too expensive. The waiters are nice and helpfull. The prices for this hotel are far to high! It,s clean, but renovation is requierd. It is, for sure not a 4 star, hotel for the moment.

We felt so warmly welcomed and enjoyed our stay very much. We would love to come back one day and recommended it already to friends. We loved the delicious food, served on the terrace. The historic surroundings made the stay special. The hotel offers a warm and cozy atmosphere and the staff is very friendly and attentive. (We had been there July 2018, Oct. was the earliest I could choose ;-) )

We spent 4 wonderful nights here in this charming, personal small hotel with exquisite food and service. Perched on a hilltop on the edge of a medieval hilltop village where there are no cars, the situation is stunning and the views spectacular. The food is creative, delicious and delivered with pride by Silvio and his team. There is a real family feel to the whole place and nothing is too much trouble. We arrived late (and a bit stressed!) but immediately our car was parked for us and bags taken to our rooms as we were ushered into the restaurant to eat, and we relaxed instantly and felt the same for our entire stay. Breakfast is simple with fresh meats, cheeses and fruits and good Italian coffee. Rooms are decorated in a country style and our balcony had views over the valley. It was lovely to escape up the hill from a busy day exploring the Lakes and relax our gourmet sanctuary (with wine...) Strongly recommend for a chill out break
