The hotel-restaurant „Al Borducan“ , a vintage manor house, has been completely refurbished without disturbing the original Art Nouveau style of the 1920s.To this day each room has kept its unique charm of the former Bregonzio residence and choice pieces of vintage furniture further the congenial atmosphere of the manor house. It goes without saying, however, that modern facilities like sat-tv, telephone, safe, free of charge wireless internet access, minibar and en suite bathroom cater to the convenience of our guests.

The hotel is high up the mountains of a Varese. It is a bit outdated and you can see this in the building and furniture. The parking is challenging, even with aan normal passenger car. The room was clean bit a bit dusty. The hospitality and service is quite good.

Hotel is located top of the mountain and it’s interesting to drive there. Parking lot is around 100 meters away from the hote but as we made reservations the instructions how to drive there came as well…so it was not difficult for us to find it. Yes, there are really tiny cobblestone roads but we knew where we booked the hotel-old medieval village and therefore it was all fine. Hotel itself is small- 8 rooms but the views from the room was amazing. Bed was comfortable and room was big enough. There is no air conditioning in the room but we left windows open for the night and it was fine. Walls between the rooms are thin but we had quiet neighbors 😊. Hotel staff is really nice and helpful. Only thing which would need improvement is breakfast. Some basic things you will find on the buffet table like really small amount of scrambled eggs , bacon, cheese, ham and fruit. Coffee and bread is served to the table. Also you need to ask class or water or juice if you want. We didn’t eat dinner there because there are many other good places around we’re to eat and enjoy the views. Overall it was a good place and experience!

Beautiful hotel. BUT...sadly we were directed up 1,800 feet to a TINY narrow street, cobbled; and arrived at the hotel without realising that as we got to the location, we then had to REVERSE all the way down the very steep, narrow cobbled road, not much wider than the car, to an area where we spent forever trying to turn around to find the car park, but I am 73 and my wife is 71. UTTERLY unsuitable unless you are a fit and active youngster. Great shame but we had to explain to the three young ladies that were receptionists, completely impossible to use the hotel unless you are a mountain goat. Slopes, footpaths and the road, of one in about four...VERY STEEP INDEED nearly saw me off. Then they tried to find us an alternative hotel, very kind, but when we followed the sat nav and got very close we started to wind our way up narorow cobbled streets, one in four slopes and once again utterly unsuitable. When will people realise that these locations are FINE...so long as you KNOW!!!!! Many people would have loved it. I know I loved it, just couldn't use it. Very sad. So great if you are fit and healthy and a hiker but for me....no chance. sorry. Really sad, the place looked brilliant as well.

Response from Riccardo Santinon, Albergatore at Al Borducan Romantic Hotel
Responded 25 Aug 2023
Dear, thank you for your point of view, I'm very happy that finally you recognize that the place look brilliant and our staff is very kind. Santa Maria del Monte, were we are, is a middle age village on the top of a mountain of 800 meters and ok, there are narrow street and ups and down road as in every mountain village, but we are not on the Everest. You don't need to be a professional hiker to arrive here, but for sure, we are not in a downtown mall with parking, escalators, elevators, mirror, shops. We are in an historic place, with silence, calm, nature, nice and easy trekking path and beautiful panorama. And i would not change that with a mall. So if you are looking for comfortable places, if you are looking for standard places, don't look at Santa Maria del Monte. That one star on Tripadvisor is for your inability to appreciate what is good in a bad day. Not for our service. Kind regards Riccardo

We stayed at Al Borducan for 2 nights. We had room with balcony. View was splendid. We ate dinner one night and food was of best quality. The staff were professional in all aspects. Breakfast very good. We also ate pasta for lunch and it was superb. We came by car and parked at the hotel parking. You have to ask at the reception where to park. It's quite a spectacular hotel.

The hotel is as special as the liqueur after whom it is named .Style is a boutique . Еvery detail is crafted to perfection .The staff is very friendly and professional. Breakfast was five star .The place has a stunning view of the lake. The hotel is also special for guests lovers of perfection. The owner is very polite and monitors the convenience of his customers. I spent 2 nights at this hotel. The location of the property is really good and have a stunning view. There is no lift and that is not a problem because the hotel is small around 10 rooms in the total. The sound insulation between the rooms is absent, you can listen every movement and each words at your neighbour's room. Concerning the breakfast, there is no open buffet, you will be served at table , basically the breakfast offered for two persons consists of 2 plain croissant, one chocolate croissant, 2 thin slices of cheese 2 thin slices of raw meat, one spoon of chocolate spread, 2 small cubes of butter, jam and bread, all in a beautiful display and coffee or any other hot drink. You can ask for fruits, nuts, yogurt, milk, corn flakes, but no eggs. During our stay There was a problem in the wifi internet connection at the hotel, we weren't able to make a call! The room was clean, the toilet at the room we chose was small and the bidet and cuvette inside it are suitable for babies and not for adults! The handle of the faucet was broken and it felt down each time we try to open it and they are trying to hide (and not repair) this ANCIENT problem by putting an aluminium foil inside it. The mini bar was complementary and refilled each day. The one large bed is formed by two single beds with two mattresses between them a distance of at least 5cm ! The staff is reduced and seems to be always busy and give a very small information as answer after too many questions you ask. The hotel is called adults only but in fact there are children. The fenicular was not working during my stay. The price of booking.com was more convenient than the booking directly with the hotel. Overall, for me, the value for money was bad, and from my point of view I consider that the hotel does not deserve the high rating that has. I recommend the visit of the beautiful Sacro Monte but I don't recommend this hotel.

We had the most relaxing “out of the world” stay in this hotel. Love was in the air, the hotel and the room were beautifully decorated and the atmosphere was so cocooning and relaxing, a perfect stay for a couple retreat. A special thank you to the staff who was so helpful and friendly and especially for carrying our luggage into the room, while we were parking the car. We felt so welcome!

We are preparing to return home to England after our 3rd visit to Al Borducan, a lovely, small, very special hotel on Sacro Monte, Varese in Northern Italy. We love this place. The hotel is elegant, our room very comfortable with wonderful views over lakes and mountains. The staff, led by Riccardo are so welcoming and helpful - nothing is too much trouble. And last but not least the food is excellent.
