#9 of 24 B&Bs / Inns in Portoferraio
Porto Sole is on the second floor of an epoque listed building in Via delle Galeazze number 30 in a quiet area of the historical centre of Portoferraio it's exactly the spot in front of the mirror of water that in the 500 was choosen by the Florentine family Medici for their commercial trade loosing it's mondanity and rebecoming our sea. To the house and to it's position, which we believe to be a breath of beauty between air and sea, we intended to add the pleasure of a unique, out of the ordinary hospitality. The result consists of bright, comfortable rooms with a view overlooking a panorama that enchants both the eyes and the soul, and common places where to enjoy an atmosphere of total privacy but in the "luxury" of a warm family welcome.

Property's Favourite Review
We booked a room at Porto Sole rooms at the end of our holiday in Tuscany, which was a bit remote and wow, what a bonus. Our room was perfect, with a balcony view to wake up to that was both stunning and romantic. Upon our arrival, Anna our host, showed us all the best places to visit and made us feel right at home. The decor was perfect, well maintained and of a very high standard, including a memory foam bed. Upstairs was a kitchenette, which you could use at any time to make coffees (with a jar of nice biscuits), a fridge if you needed to keep anything fresh, which contained free chilled juices, water & milk for guests. The room also contained a beautiful well maintained and very functional ensuite, as well as a quiet air con unit. Below to the left off the marina we visited a fantastic restaurant, which served fantastic food (try the fried fish!). We hired a scooter for a couple of days and Anna let us park it overnight, behind the Porto Sole car. A stunning, beautiful and relaxing place to stay - excellent value for your money.

Because of a problem in another area, we found ourselves with an extra day available that we had not planned on. Karen had always wanted to visit Elba Island. So, we decided to go there on our way from Porto Ercole to Portofino. An internet search found several options of places to stay in Portoferraio, which is the town where Napoleon was exiled for a year. Since that is what we really wanted to see, we wanted to find a place that was relatively close to it and also with a nice view. It is only about an hour ferry ride from Piombino to Elba. We decided to leave the car on the mainland and just walk on to the ferry. Enter Porto Sole Rooms. This is quite the place! Don’t go looking for any neon signs or anything. We put on our backpack and walked from the ferry dock to where the Porto Sole Rooms were supposed to be. The GPS said we had arrived, but we sure didn’t see anything. Finally after poking around a little and trying to figure out where we had gone wrong, we noticed a little sign on the door on the backside of a nondescript building. I might mention that the walk to get there was amazing. The harbor is full of an eclectic mix of authentic, working fishing boats, side by side with beautiful yachts, both sail and power. The sidewalk takes you within inches of these beautiful vessels. I was already drooling, having a great love of boating. Anyway, back to the nondescript door. We walked in the little narrow door, went up the stairs and found a locked wrought iron gate blocking the hallway. Now what we wondered? No one around. So, we got out the email with the reservation information on it and called the number. No answer. We left a message and went to find some lunch. That is another story. Within about half a block there is a wonderful little cafe that apparently caters to locals. Excellent food. Not too long after we sat down to lunch we got a call from someone who spoke a little English. They said they would meet us back at the little door at 2 PM. Sure enough, shortly after 2 a nice gentleman showed up and took us upstairs and through the locked gate and showed us the room. Wow! This was nice! And the view of the harbor, amazing! The room had a beautiful little terrace that opened on to the harbor. Truly, the docks could not have been more than about 30 feet away. We were on the second floor and had a spectacular view of the harbor and the waterfront. This place was wonderful! The room was spotlessly clean and painted an overall white. It was comfortably furnished and had a nice chair to relax in. The bed was also wonderful! And it was king size!!! Not all that common in Italy. The bathroom had all the amenities that you would want and the shower was excellent. There was another, similar room above this one. It did not seem to be rented that night. The kitchen was located on that level. They provided excellent coffee and a nice assortment of teas and juices and some goodies for that evening. The next morning we were given a simple, but very nice breakfast consisting of rolls and croissants and cake and cereals and juice. I think we were the only ones there. We could only make a dent in the food they provided. It seemed to be fresh and homemade. Someone had brought it in early and left it there for us. I felt bad they had gone to all that work and we could only eat so little of it. The rooms are only about a fifteen minute walk from the residence that Napoleon occupied during his exile here. I highly recommend you take it the house and the museum located in that house. The history was very interesting. And there is an incredible view of the ocean from his gardens. We truly enjoyed our night at the Porto Sole Rooms. You cannot go wrong staying here. It was quiet, comfortable, affordable and had a “to die for” view. The room itself faces the waterfront, however the entrance is around the back side of that building and is not obvious. But it is well worth finding!

This little gem is tucked into the best location in the historic center at the edge of the harbor and really distinguishes itself from the rest of the frankly shabby accommodations all over this island. Recently refurbished with exquisite good taste, everything is gorgeous and works perfectly.

We had a lovely stay here in the off peak season of October. The shared kitchen was not a problem, despite what other guests have said in the review. We liked it that it felt like a home. Although it is situated right in the heart of the harbour, the noise was never a problem. The host, Anna was delightful and very attentive.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Porto Sole for a part of our honeymoon. We stayed in a spacious, clean room with a large bed and a nice mix of old and modern design with a quaint balcony overlooking the entire harbour. We spent every morning eating breakfast out on the balcony (we did hop down to the market across the street to complement the breakfast). It was crazy hot outside but the AC worked perfectly fine. Our host Anna was delightful and helpful! She recommended a couple of really good restaurants as well. Johan & Sofia
