The location of the hotel is perfect for the beach, public transport , shops and the many swimming pools at little beach clubs. We had a day at the beautiful walled city of Lucca - one hour by bus, 9 euros return - and a day in the stunning Pietrasanta with its many marble statues- 20 mins by bus, 3 euros return. We bought the bus tickets at the hotel.
I am sure that I will return with my (jealous) husband in the near future and I happily recommend the Hotel Fortunella to anyone looking for safe, quiet and excellent accommodation.
Upon arrival we were greeted by Grace and her brother Salvatore who made us feel like our holiday of last year was continuing it was as if we had never there left the only difference was that face masks must be worn inside most of the hotel but not if your in the dining room areas.
We arrived mid day and our room was ready for us , the room was immaculate and very modern in decor.
There is a fridge in the room but this is not stocked , so you can purchase drinks either down stairs or there is a super market nearby .
Prices of drinks vary, wines range from 19 euros a bottle, beers and cocktails are 5 euros.
The evening meal is selected at table the night before by marking choices on the menu.
Breakfast is buffet styled but you choose your selections and it’s served onto a plate for you by the waitress .
There is a choice of ...Cereals, Croissants ,Jams ,Toast , Hams & Cheeses , Cake also available are Eggs ( to order ) with Beans , Sausages and Bacon , there is a choice of fresh juices Coffee or Tea which is brought to your table .
All this sets you up for the rest of the morning.
There are lots of cafes ,bars and restaurants around should you feel peckish during the day.
A coffee is less than 2 euros in most cafes , lots of nice ( delicious ) cakes to choose from or try a beer or a Spritze to quench your thirst.
Your only a short walk away from the beach and the promenade where should you choose you can walk along to Viareggio where you will find many shops to peruse.
You must wear a face mask in all shops and they are very strict on hand sanitisation and social distances.
There are buses to other towns and tickets can be purchased at the reception desk .
Many of the organised bus trips were unavailable due to the current Covid situation.
The garden is tidy and sun loungers are available to use , there is a charge for towels. The weather wasn’t very pleasant some days so we didn’t get to make use them this year .
Wifi is available at a small charge of 5 euros for 14 days .
The hotel is a real jem and we loved our stay there as I hope you will too.
Hopefully we will get the chance to definitely return for another stay in the not so distant future. 👍
Our room was mid sized with a balcony to the front of the hotel which was great for the evening sun . The room included a day bed , tv a nice sized bathroom of which was cleaned every day and was spotless.
We will miss our glass of wine and a spritz on our balcony every evening.
It's a 3 min walk to the beach , a 15 min taxi ride to viareggio train station and a 3 min walk to catch a direct bus to pisa airport.
Looking forward to a return in the future 😀
Plus points: excellent food especially for fish lovers not so sure about vegetarians; very helpful staff who can advise about travel and visits etc; very good location for public transport to Florence, Pisa, Lucca and other interesting areas; near to the beach and a lovely long promenade.
Minus points: rather noisy street although the window insulation helps; dinner is a fixed time at 19.30 which can be restricting; central air conditioning is noisy and ineffective and this is exacerbated because it is switched off supposedly for sanitisation ( perhaps because of Covid) between 7.00 and 14.00 which meant the room was unbearably hot; there is an uncomfortable plastic mattress protector on the bed; wifi is payable but only 5 euros per stay - just seems unnecessary; beach towels 5 euros each; cheapest wine 17 euros and even water at dinner is 2 euros. If you pay by credit card it will be in pounds so the exchange rate will be poor - no facility to pay in euros by credit card.
General: as is usual in much of Italy there is only a very small public beach area. The hotel is linked to a private beach which costs 20 euros a day for two loungers plus parasol. Loads of places nearby to eat if on breakfast only. Trains and buses are cheap and easy. Tui mentions ‘gardens’ but it is just a relatively small though pleasant garden area. Tui also says cycle hire available but this is not through the hotel.
The food is just unbelievable. Freshly made to order. You pick your menu the day before and believe me will not be disappointed. Four courses of quality produce but be warned take bigger clothes as you can't leave any thing because it is so nice! Breakfast is buffet style ( the staff serve this to you due to the Covid situation) and also cooked breakfast us available. The cakes and pastries are beautiful.
The hotel has no pool but does have a lovely relaxing garden with chairs and sun loungers. Staff are happy to serve you with drinks outside and it's a lovely place to sit and relax. Rooms are spacious and all have a balcony. Our room had mountain views and it was lovely to sit out and watch the sun go down.
There is a small bar area where you can go after dinner should you wish. They have a good selection of wines and other drinks. We went out most nights to the sea front where there are lots of shops and restaurants. The restaurants are happy to serve just drinks.
The staff are very helpful and have good knowledge of the local area. They provide a discount for sunbeds and umbrellas at the local beach £20 for 2 chairs 2 longers and a parasol. You also get a bar and clean toilets and showers for the price. The sea us so warm too. Highly recommended.

We arrived mid day and our room was ready for us , along with a nice bottle of Prosecco the room was immaculate and very modern in decor.
We had a third floor room with a nice view from our balcony.
The weather was HOT but the AC worked perfectly.
There is a fridge in the room but this is not stocked , so you can purchase drinks either down stairs or there is a super market nearby .

Note…This is a good hour walk
There are buses to other towns and tickets can be bought from the local Tabacchi
There was a superb market with some great stalls on the Wednesday at Forte Del Marne just a short bus ride away .
The garden is tidy and sun loungers are available to use , there is a charge for beach towels.
Wifi is available at a small charge of 5 euros for 14 days .
The hotel is a real jem and we loved our THIRD stay there as I hope you will enjoy it too.
Hopefully we will get the chance to definitely return for another stay in the not so distant future. 👍
The family that run the hotel, and their staff do everything to make your stay a holiday to remember.
The food is excellent, with plenty of variety to keep everyone happy.
The hotel is an easy, short stroll from the beach and busses to Pisa, Lucca (not to be missed) about 1 hour by bus, and the bus to the railway station for your day trip to Florence. All very user friendly. Bus tickets cost around 3.5 - 4.5euros pp each way for Pisa and Florence, with short journeys (15-30 mins) costing 1.5 euros pp each way.
Salvetore will sort you out with bus tickets and timetables for both busses and trains. We bought tickets for the tower at Pisa and the Duomo in Florence on line whilst we were there and Salvatore printed them for us. He made some excellent recommendations for other places to visit too, Pietro Santo and old Camaiore town, both around 15 minutes away by bus, and absolutely charming.
The hotel garden is peaceful and relaxing, with sun loungers, umbrellas, tables and chairs, where you can enjoy a cup of tea/coffee or a tipple of your choice (Aperol spritz goes down well).
There is both a supermarket and an ATM within a 5 minute walk.
All in all, I would recommend this hotel as a great choice to explore beautiful Tuscany.
The food was beautifully presented and some of it was very nice, however you would struggle if you were vegetarian. Wine with the meal starts from 19 euros and a jug of water is 2 euros. Mealtimes are a little inflexible, with dinner being 7.30pm each evening.
It's a good base to visit Pisa and Lucca and it's possible to take the train to Florence from the nearby small town. Staff at the hotel are good at helping to plan trips.
The wide prom is a few minutes walk away and there are plenty of places to eat and drink there. The downside is that the cafes completely hide the beach from view when strolling on the prom. The beaches are private, with a public part at the very end and I imagine they would be horribly crowded in the height of the season judging by the endless rows of sunbeds.
We arrived at the hotel after the evening dinner was scheduled to start, but Salvatore politely asked us to make our selections from the comprehensive menu straight away to allow us to enjoy what was on offer, we weren’t disappointed! The food the first night was excellent, a theme that continued for the full week. Definitely restaurant quality with the service to match. I can honestly say, we were never tempted to eat out at night, why would we? The room for the first night was the only slight issue for us, as the air conditioning unit was a little noisy and the bathroom fan also disturbed our sleep. My wife asked Salvatore if there was any chance of a room change. Well, without fuss or bother we were given the choice of 4 other rooms, all very smart and modern. We eventually went for the master suite in the separate villa. To say it was fantastic would be an understatement, spacious, modern and airy, along with a lovely balcony overlooking the gardens. Everywhere and everything in the hotel is spotless, paying full attention to COVID 19 guidelines.
Fortunella is a just short 5 minute walk to the sea front, with its array of restaurants, bars and shops. Again everything spotless and well looked after. This was our first beach holiday to Italy, it certainly won’t be our last. We very much look forward to visiting again in the not too distant future. For us Hotel Fortunella was the find of a lifetime and we’ll be back.
