We booked the flight and hotel seperately, so not on a package.
A few things I think would be useful to know:

1. Breakfast was included in the hotel cost, but no other meals. No facilities in the rooms to store or prepare food and you were mostly reliant on their meal service. It would have been €17 lunch & €42 dinner, which was a lot extra that we hadn't budgeted for. It was a fixed cost buffet and while it was hearty-looking, it was all soups, stews and heavy sauces. We had asked the driver to stop at the supermarket on the way back so we got some things we could keep and prepare easily. There was only a very small fridge in our room and as I said, nothing else, so bring utensils etc. if you want to eat your own food.

2. They give you a snowsuit and boots for the duration of your stay, with the option for warm mitts and socks if available. I found the boots uncomfortable, but the snowsuits were awesome.

3. The Northern Lights! We managed to see them on the first night with our "Aurora Alarm" buzzer, that goes off between 8-12 if the lights are sighted and staff told us how to walk to the lake to get the best view. We suited up and went to the lake with a few others and watched for about 20 minutes. The next night we went on an Aurora Drive - a trip costing €115 each and didn't see a thing.

I guess my advice here is to think carefully before spending money on the 'Aurora' activites, given the lights can also be seen locally when they appear.

Very nice atmosphere, it feels like in a small village. We stayed in Aurora Kota and we were very happy about it. Good space inside, big windows above the bed which allow to stare at the sky the whole night!!
Toilets and sink available as well which is very convenient. The shower and sauna are in a separate house (from our Kota 30 seconds walk) and you can book slots between 2:00pm and 8:00pm to enjoy it for yourself!

The activities organized by the hotel are a bit pricy but well worth the try! We did the snowmobile tryout in the afternoon (sunset) and the Reindeer farm and we loved both!

Breakfast is included and very good, hot and cold options available. As a small feedback, it would be maybe good to have another option rather than pork for meat :)
Meal buffet are also available for lunch and diner respectively 17€ & 42€/pers.

Staff is very friendly and helpful!

Overall the place is just amazing!

We rented a car from Ivalo airport and it was very easy to reach the hotel on our own.

And if you are lucky enough, you might enjoy the beauty of northern lights...

Thank you

Dear hugo f, First things first: thank you for visiting us! Thank you for letting us know about your feelings during your stay with us. Fun fact about the Nellim Village is that the size of the hotel is almost the same with the village itself so the "village feeling" is well understandable. Nellim is really speacal place. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your accommodation and your time at the activities. Snowmobiling is much fun when in Lapland and Reindeers of course are also worth to see. Thank you for the feedback regarding the breakfast. It is important for us to know how the guests have felt during the stay and we are happy to hear any improvements from our guests. We are pleased to hear that your holiday at Nellim was enjoyable and you spent nice time with us. You are warmly welcome to visit us again if coming to Lapland! Best regards, Pirita Nellim Wilderness Hotels & Safaris

Over Christmas we stayed in the glass igloo at Nellim. The room was small but warm with a great view of the snow dusted trees and a cloudy sky. We found that the rooms really needed a brighter light so you could read or even just to see what was in your luggage bag. In the common room the internet dropped out often but wasn't an issue if you had a book or crossword. Nellim could really do with a shower block, just for showering as the showers attached to the sauna block really shouldn't be used while others have a sauna booking.
The above is meant to be taken as constructive, we really did enjoy our stay and would 100% recommend. The activities and area were amazing. There is a lot of quiet time however, so maybe a few more board games in the common area wouldn't go astray.

We recently visited Nellim Wilderness Hotel, staying 4 nights under their Arctic Explorer Package.

Our whole time at Nellim was absolutely fantastic. This is a real bucket list trip, giving you access to the most stunning scenery and amazing activities.

We had three nights in a Wilderness Room and then upgraded for the final night into an Aurora Bubble. All the accommodation was great, but the Bubble was a fantastic experience and we were lucky enough to get a clear night in there to see the stars. I think one night in the Bubble was enough for us, as the room is quite small and there is no shower (so you have to use the one in the separate sauna building). This wasn’t a problem for one night, but may have become a tad annoying for longer. It was a lovely touch that we were given complimentary sparkling wine and chocolates in the Bubble too!

All of the activities were planned out for us and we were given an itinerary on arrival. This included a “reindeer day” including snowmobiling, snowshoeing, husky sledding and a couple of evening aurora watching trips. We enjoyed every activity, all giving their own opportunity to something we had never done before. In the evening, we were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights 2 out of the 4 nights, including the night we went on the Aurora Snowmobiling trip. This was a truly memorable experience.

The hotel itself is nice and the food was great. It is fairly basic, but we had some nice soups and stews etc for tea and it was always something different. The breakfast had plenty of hot and cold options. As others have said, the alcohol prices are high and we did actually buy some wine at the airport as duty free. Although we were not allowed to drink this in the bar / restaurant (understandably), we found it a better and cheaper option to go back to our room or sit outside on the lake to drink.

Finally, a special shout out to the staff. Mika was absolutely brilliant and spent so much time with us helping out on our camera settings to get the perfect northern lights pictures! He even let us keep his tripod for the final few nights to help us get the best shots. That was really nice of him! We also very much enjoyed our snowshoeing trek with Kimmo, who made it a funny and interesting day!

Definitely visit here!

Dear sbrady13, thank you for visiting us. We appreciate your time given to us when writing this review. We are happy to hear that you ended up to book our ready made package which is one of the easiest things to book since the package includes accommodation, activities, full board meals and airport transfers. And from the package it is possible to upgrade first or last night to Aurora Accommodation and I'm happy to hear that you ended up to experience two different accommodation types during your stay. Thank you for the tips regarding the activities and the activity arranging as well. It is nice to hear that you found it helpful to receive the ready made schedule for you after your arrival to hotel. We try our best to make our guests holiday as easy and relaxing as possible. In the end, we really want to thank you for your visit to us. It is our pleasure to hear that you liked your stay with us and enjoyed the meals you had with us and most imporantly: you had great time with our staff. We are there for you and we are happy to hear that you got some great new memories to share with your friends. We hope all the best for you! We booked our 4 night activity break via the Aurora Zone. I’m glad we did. They arranged flights, transfers, accommodation, meals and activities for us and everything ran as smooth as clockwork. Nellim is very small and peaceful, and everything seems to revolve around the Wilderness Hotel. It’s a lovely, friendly hotel, with staff who are always pleased to assist with any questions you may have. We thoroughly enjoyed the activities which were arranged and tried snow mobiling, husky sledding, reindeer herder visit and three aurora camp visits in the evening to see the Northern Lights ( which we did do, twice ). The food at the hotel is exceptional. We often commented that it’s some of the best hotel food we’ve ever had. The choice isn’t huge, but it’s more than adequate, and the emphasis is definitely on the quality. The room we had was really good and was in a separate block less than 50 yards from the main hotel, restaurant/bar area. Although it was cold outside, the hotel and rooms were really warm (I sat in the bar with t shirt and jeans) and effective outdoor gear was provided for when you are outside. I would really recommend this hotel with the Aurora Zone as your agent.

Everything was just nice with our stay in the Aurora Bubble. It was very nice that we were able to reserve the sauna with showers every afternoon - as with the bubble, this was also very new and nicely maintained. The food was with great variety and regardless of your flavour you will be able to find something. The drinks were reasonable and the service from the staff was absolutely perfect. Very difficult to find anything to complain about ! A perfect stay !

What a fantastic experience this trip and package was.

I had a package (Arctic Explorer) that included everything (transfers, activities, clothes rental, food, room etc) and I would absolutely do this again without a doubt.

The transfer person was waiting at the airport (a day later that originally planned as my flight was cancelled, but for them to change was no problem) Check in was fast and easy. The room was comfortable and warm, the rental clothing and shoes were great quality, the food was excellent.... and then there's the activities and guides.

I think you generally choose a package deal in this situation because the northern lights are never guaranteed, so you add activities to have something to do - just in case. However, the activities - I did husky sledding, snowmobiling, aurora hunting, and reindeer farm visiting are exceptional with or without the lights.
The guides are next level awesome. Friendly, helpful, capable, calm, relaxed, interested. I was instantly at ease, they were social and knowledgable and very easy to spend time with.
I originally thought this was an expensive package, however, after taking the trip, with all the activities and food and clothing and transfers and accomodation included, I've changed my mind, it's actually excellent value.

While wifi and internet is available, there was no tv or radio in the room, which was a really good thing, there was wood and earth tones, and wilderness and a chance to disconnect from the big wide world and enjoy nature.

Try to book directly rather than through third party sites. It's better for those who do the actual work.

Expensive yes but well worth the experience. We saw the Northern lights 5 nights in a row, did all the activities, weather was fantastic, food was great, people really helpful. Couple of pieces of advice. Alcohol is expensive....its really cold...unsurprisingly, so make sure you take clothes that you can layer. Definitely thermal underwear, suggest top and bottoms separate, warm jumpers preferably fleeced hoodies, good walking shoes with Yak Trax, 2-3 pairs of gloves again to layer. They give you a snow, snow boots, gloves and a balaclava. All their kit is n really good condition...impressive. We went as a couple but will take our kids in 2 years time when the youngest is old enough to drive the snowmobile. Its a must do holiday, cannot rate higher enough.

Dear dean0_b thank you for your review regarding your stay with us. We appreciate your time given to us when letting us know about your stay. We are happy for you that you saw Northern lights many times during your stay. It is also gret to hear that you have enjoyed the activities, meals and the time spent with our staff. Thank you for the tips for the others as well! It is true that alcohol in Finland is expensive when you compare to other European countries. Also it is good to remind the future guests about the clothing! It is really important to wear warmly. Layers are the key word when preparing for the winter and planning the packing list. It is great reviw for us to hear that you are planning to visit us again with your whole family. We are very much looking forwad to that! We hope all the best for you. This hotel is a scam all around… where to start.
We booked the Aurora Bubbles and paid A LOT of money to stay there for only 3 nights, but we thought we are only going to be in Lapland once so surely it will be worth it, we couldn’t have been more wrong.

Upon checking in we were advised that the room only has a toilet and a sink but no shower. In order to take a shower we had to book a time slot at the sauna were there are a couple of showers.

So every morning, in -15 degrees weather we had to don all of our snow gear to walk to the sauna to take a shower, then walk all the way back to our room to get changed, only to then walk all the way back to the restaurant to have breakfast.

The room itself is the single tiniest room I have ever seen in my life, there is only enough space for the bed and absolutely nothing else, even opening the suitcases was a big struggle.
The main feature of our room was the glass dome facing north, and when it snows this gets cleaned by the staff around 6pm. If it snows again, it doesn’t get cleared again. My partner and I asked at reception if we could get hold of the long brushes the staff had used to clear the dome so that we could do it ourselves and we were told that “they didn’t know where the brushes were kept”.

The construction of the room was done by Stevie Wonder himself, looked terrible. Panelling was all over the place and painting was patchy at best.

Want to do some activities? No problem, they are all incredibly overpriced and non refundable, even though you only booked around 10 minutes prior.

We booked the “Meet the reindeers” and the Snowmobiles tour… they cost €130 pp per tour, so a grand total of €520 all spent in one day for something that would have cost us way less in Rovaniemi.

Both tours were meant to be 2,5 hours long… they weren’t: the Reindeer one lasted barely just over an hour and was incredibly disappointing.
The reindeer farm is only 5 minutes away by sleigh, we got there, fed the reindeers, got told a bit about them, got taken out on a sleigh ride which lasted about 4 to 5 minutes, and then got offered some hot juice. Lastly, we were shown how to catch a reindeer, and that was that… again, €130 pp for that.

The snowmobile at least lasted a couple of hours, but again since only my partner drove the actual snowmobile and I was only a passenger I don’t see how they can charge €130 pp for that.

Lastly, the whole place smells like sewers, which is absolutely disgusting while walking to the restaurant.

Only positive was the food: the buffet (breakfast, lunch and dinner) was delicious and always somewhat sticking to traditional finnish cuisine which was greatly appreciated.

All in all, do not drive all the way for this and most definitely do not pay all that money for a hotel that definitely is not worth it.

This was an excellent holiday, we thoroughly enjoyed our time at nellim wilderness hotel. The staff were all friendly and we felt well looked after. The hotel is run very well and has a nice relaxed atmosphere with cosy interiors. Everything was convenient and stress free!
We stayed in a lodge with it's own sauna and then a bubble for the last night. The bubble was a fun experience to end our stay but as it doesn't have a full bathroom and is quite small it was best to stay in the spacious lodge the rest of the time. I would be surprised if anyone actually saw the northern lights from the bubble itself, it is more a nice place to look up at the stars from.
In my experience you need to go out onto the lake after dark (the street lights turn off at 11pm) which is right out the front of the hotel, or go on one of the many evening tours to get a better chance of seeing them. We did for 2 nights out of our 4 in late January, but you do need patience and be prepared to stand outside in minus 20 for a couple of hours...

The meals in the hotel were a buffet and for each meal each day there were new options to try. They were hearty but not unhealthy. As a vegetarian there was enough for me to choose from. Lots of potato based dishes, soup, salads, roasted veg, cheese etc. And a dessert at most meals. After 5 days of eating all 3 meals in the same place we still didn't get bored, it was pretty tasty as they use lots of herbs.

Before we arrived in lapland, I was worried I would feel uncomfortably cold all the time but that was not the case. Despite it being minus 20 - 30 during our stay, we were kept well equipped. The hotel provides overalls which go over all your clothes (including your regular coat etc) and proper snow boots. you can wear two pairs of thick socks in those. And they can give you a balaclava and second pair of mitten gloves to wear over your own gloves. I wore about 7 layers of vest, tshirt, thermals, jumpers, coat etc. underneath my overalls and this kept me warm enough to stay out for a 3 hour activity. I'd also recommend a scarf you can pull up over your face to keep that warm too.

And lastly, as for the activities at the hotel, they were so good! We tried many of them, the husky sledding, snowshoeing, skiing, snowmobiling, aurora camp and had so much fun. The guides were brilliant and it is such a fantastic way to get out there in the scenery and explore the snowy wilderness. Absolutely stunning!

Cannot recommend it more!

We've just come back and all the time during the day we wore hotel's snow boots which are excellent. When walking from room to the main hotel building for meals, we wore our own walking boots/leather boots with good grip. So I'd say no need for snow boots
