Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.

Detailed Reviews
This hotel is in a wonderful location in Richmond and the building itself is wonderful. The room we stayed in was well laid out and furnished to a high standard.
The greeting on arrival was good and the staff were welcoming and friendly. We even bumped into the head of housekeeping who was very friendly and was checking our room and this showed care and attention to detail.
Sadly, what let the hotel down was the restaurant staff. We went to the bar for a drink in the evening and were completely ignored whilst various staff were chatting, so we left and went elsewhere. In the morning we had breakfast and the eggs were overcooked and staff did not clear our plates. It was not busy and they were just stood around talking about plans for an upcoming wedding. It gave the impression that we were less important.
Upon checkout, staff were friendly, but we were not asked how our stay was. This was a missed opportunity.
Overall, we would potentially stay here again for the location, but would recommend giving the restaurant a miss (we will certainly be doing so if we do decide to stay again).

We had a good stay here using the 3 nights for 2 August offer. We have eaten here many times in the past for family occasions but have never stayed here. The rooms are somewhat dated and they could do with some nice smelling candles in the corridors as there was a bit of a stale food smell. Our original deluxe room had a small double bed and overlooked the car park but had a large balcony and separate shower. We were upgraded to a junior suite which had a small seating area. If you stay at the hotel overlooking the car park then you can hear cars arriving and the laundry collection was quite early. I imagine that rooms at the side of the hotel have a better view and are quieter. Staff were helpful. Systems are a bit paper based and so slow to check out. We ate off the club menu which is available until around 9pm and had a good choice of food. Breakfast was not included and was £24 for continental so we bought our own breakfast from outside. There are lots of nice restaurants in Richmond and the hotel is well located for Petersham Nurseries, Kew Gardens and a walk along the river. It is quite far from central London during busy times.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.

I was worried after reading some of the reviews but I have to say we had a lovely experience. We booked room only as we like the freedom to do our own thing so I can't comment on the food.
I understand what people mean about the furnishings and decor and it won't be to everyone's taste but it did have a fitting charm.
Classic room was on the small side but perfect. It was clean and fluffy towels, drinks and toiletries were replenished each day.
The only criticism I have is that security seemed lax. Management may have this covered but the reception was in a room off the entrance and the front door always seemed unlocked. It was so easy to walk in and access the lifts.
It was fantastic to leave the car for no charge. We have stayed in Richmond hotels previously where there was a significant daily charge. The 65 bus runs every 5 minutes or so with bus stops right outside the hotel. The latter links you up in minutes to the tube and overground trains.
We will definitely be returners.

This hotel could, no doubt, be lovely, but during the heatwave it was unbearable. We paid for sleep but got none because our room was baking. As it cooled at around 3am we we opened the window behind the thick curtains to no avail, not wishing to open them with the sun rising at 5.30. I would return in the winter when I hope they will have replaced the little bottles of bathroom amenities with large pump bottles.

The hotel is very nice. But we arrived at 8.45pm and it was tricky to eat with a very limited menu. No one to help with the bags - and my mum is 80.
The room was quiet but from 7.20am there was someone in the corridor doing something. The bathroom has only a hand held shower over a bath - which needs modernising. There is also no aircon which would be a disaster in summer.
This is a shame as the building is stunning.
The staff were very pleasant and that makes a difference.

A ‘discretional’ 3% addition to bill wasn’t explained on check in so that was fun to find out at check out. Considering from check in to check out our service was terrible, it came as a shock. Breakfast was awful, some of the ingredients for the meal I asked for were missing and the full English breakfasts were cold. All 3 of our tables had issues with their food. Room was ok but nothing to shout about. On check out, we found charges of over £70 that had been added to our bill as a tip to them. We asked them to remove it as it was apparently meant to be optional. The receptionist was stroppy about us asking questions and removing the service charges, her English was terrible so not sure she understood what we were asking as check out took an age. I would strongly suggest avoiding this place and staying at a premier inn as you’ll get better service for your money.

Please be assured we take all feedback seriously and will investigate the areas highlighted in your review as a matter of urgency. The optional 3% service charge should have been made aware to you at check in and removed at your request at check out, along with any additional optional charges. There are many good points about the Petersham Hotel. The fantastic location with views over the Thames form Richmond Hill is undoubtedly its major selling point. During our two nights stay the reception team were professional, helpful, and friendly. Likewise, the housekeeping team were clearly very efficient, and our rooms were clean and serviced to a high standard. When we did encounter the housekeepers, they were very friendly and professional. Each of these teams are a credit to the hotel and deserve to be congratulated.
Sadly, the same cannot be said for our experience of the hotel restaurant. We found the restaurant experience rude and unwelcoming. Our breakfast on the second day was particularly bad, the coffee we were served was undrinkable. There were long delays in ordering our food and drinks, the wrong orders arrived, the toast was cold, and the eggs were burned. There seemed to be a real shortage of breakfast cereal options, and my partner noticed that the box of cereals brought to her were over four months out of date.
Several weeks prior to our arrival we booked to have dinner in the hotel restaurant on the Monday night of our stay and enjoy the magnificent views over the river. Unfortunately, at lunchtime on that day I received a call on my mobile phone from the restaurant manager to say that the restaurant would not be open that evening as it was a bank holiday and only a room service menu would be served. Clearly this was not suitable, and I was then faced at short notice with finding somewhere else to eat that evening. This is not acceptable and is deeply unprofessional. If the restaurant wasn’t going to be open that evening, why was my booking taken and why was I only told at such short notice? Further, why was I sent a confirmation email just a day or so before to confirm my booking?
Since staying in the hotel (around six weeks ago) I have written twice to the hotel manager and another senior staff member to ask for their views on our experience. Unfortunately, to date we have yet to receive a response (or even acknowledgement) from either of them.
We’ve stayed at the Petersham before, but I’m afraid to say that given the lack of response to the concerns I raised with the hotel manager, this was the last time we will do so.

Dear Mark, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We would like to sincerely apologise for the experience you had regarding our restaurant. I can assure you these are not the standards we look to uphold and the heads of department have been notified regarding your review. We're very sorry to hear that you were contacted so late regarding your dinner reservation, unfortunately due to staff shortages we've had to close our restaurant for dinner. This will be raised with the restaurant and reception teams to make sure guests are made aware of the current situation when booking. In regards to the mail sent to The Petersham it seems as though this has not been received, the General Manager has asked if you would be able to contact him regarding your visit via his email address (i.keles@petershamhotel.co.uk). We'd also like to say thank you for your positive comments towards our reception and housekeeping teams, we've passed these onto the teams also. If you could please get in contact with our General Manager via the email address above we would love to sort this out with you and try to restore your faith in The Petersham. Kind regards The Petersham Hotel

We have stayed at this hotel many times. It is in a beautiful location overlooking the Thames, it has on-site parking and is a very short walk down to the bus that takes you into town or to the railway station.
However, despite having booked the same grade room as the previous visit (a Deluxe River Double) this room seemed much smaller. We noticed quite a few changes since being there the last time before the pandemic hit.
This may have been taken over by new management? We found the Receptionist/Manager on our first encounter rather brusque. Not the usual welcome at all. Then we found that whilst they take an Amex number to secure your booking, they will no longer accept Amex for payment of your bill. We feel that this practice is misleading. And we question the collection of this data when it is for no legitimate purpose..
The electrics in our room (216) were not working, apart from the lights. The initial response from the lady at Reception was that there were no technicians at the property over the weekend!! The next call we made we found a much more amenable gentleman who listened to our theory that something must have been tripped in a particular circuit if the lights were still working. He found the relevant board and restored our circuit about an hour later.
The other thing is that they no longer operate their restaurant for dinners. When we had booked this hotel back in April they were having difficulties with staffing. We understood - it was happening everywhere. But more than 6 months later they have either given up, or don't care to provide guests with a restaurant that provides dinner in what is supposed to be an upmarket establishment. We also found the service for breakfast underwhelming.
UK Family and friends who have been there since the pandemic had warned us that it had gone off, but you have to try these things yourself sometimes. Next time we will listen!

Dear TheFoleysAustralia, Many thanks for your feedback, we are pleased that you enjoyed our location and surrounding area. We're sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your bedroom, all our rooms are unique and do slightly differ from one another. Unfortunately like many other hotels we are still recovering from the hospitality staffing crisis that hit after the pandemic and are sorry to hear of your experience with us. We are trying really hard to maintain the levels of service that people expect when coming to The Petersham. All our team members are given additional training frequently and we will make sure that your points are recognised. In regards to the restaurant we do offer our Club Menu which is available for residents to enjoy in our bar or restaurant every night and are very sorry if this was not conveyed to you. We do hope to welcome you back soon where we can restore your faith in us. Kind regards, The Petersham

Afternoon Tea
Good Points: Beautiful setting, lovely views. Attentive staff.
Big choice of drinks - the English Breakfast Tea was particularly good.
Bad POints: Proportion of patisserie to sandwiches was too high. Could have done with more sandwiches and less patisserie. The sandwiches were OK, not the best I’ve had. The scones also, OK, not the best I’ve had.
The cakes / patisserie was the most disappointing element - They weren’t cakes so much as creamy patisserie. Chocolate mousse inside a chocolate shell - more what you would have as a desert. A large White chocolate coconut ball, covering a mess of what my husband described as uncooked cake dough. Disgusting. An oversweet fruit cake. And a chocolate layer cake which looked plastic.
Come on guys, what happened to a good old lemon drizzle or coffee and walnut cake?
Unfortunately i wouldn’t go again - at £60 per head you would hope to have edible cakes.

We had booked a superior room which was far from superior. It was very small with no walk in shower only a bath shower which was frankly dangerous getting in and out of. However the biggest issue was that there was no air conditioning in our room in 35 degree heat. The weather is not the hotels fault but it was unbearable heat. we were provided with a little fan that did little to help. When I spoke to reception I was told that only some rooms has air-con and it was "tough luck" more or less. We were charged £255 for Friday night and £275 for Saturday night and when I complained that another family member had stayed at the same rate in a far superior room with air-con, I was told some rooms have it others dont!. This is really not acceptable. When I asked for a discount I was given £11 off the bill. I was told the manager was not there but that he would call me later that day! never got a call back. We could have stayed at other hotels in Richmond for far less and with air-con. Very disappointing and uncomfortable stay.

Not sure
I did eat a gluten free meal in the restaurant, but had no choice - it was a steak so not very exciting! I think the menu is usually more extensive as I believe there was refurbishment going on.
I’m sorry to hear this. But we’ve stayed and eaten there several times with no
problem. If they’ve brought in a new system, I would suggest leaving a note on your dashboard saying you’re staying there, and tell reception you’ve done that. Parking in London is so hard these days, I expect people have been taking advantage of the hotel. Good luck!
And Richmond Hill Bakery!
