While the bridge works change the route to arrive this was fine. The car park was large and costs £11 per night. The staff were friendly and efficient. The room was large and well equipped with a comfortable bed giving a good nights sleep. Nice clean bathroom. Good breakfast table served. Located very near the city centre for easy walking. Good leisure centre too.

We stayed at the hotel for 4 nights as part of a coach party from Norfolk. Lovely room, well maintained. Info provided when we arrived explained that the room would be serviced after the 3rd night, but in fact this was done after the 2nd night. Plenty of tea and coffee provided as well as toiletries in the bathroom. We found the food offering was very good quality and always served cheerfully and efficiently. We think the choosing dinner menus for the following evening was useful in these difficult times. Peter was there in the mornings and Jade served us at dinner, they and others there at the same time made dining a pleasure. Reception was always most helpful and Stuart was friendly and efficient. All in all, we found all staff to be helping to make our first nights away from home since the start of lockdown a very enjoyable break. Thank you.

Probably our only break this year, but we did enjoy it ! Three nights at the Royal County was very pleasant. Staff were great, generous sized room in the new annex ( once we had figured out that there was a second floor 'bridge' to cross !). In fact bridges were the biggest hassle - with the main bridge over the Wear closed, bit of a lengthy diversion and a couple of wrong turns to actually get to the hotel. Breakfast was excellent - SD queue for the hot options, anything cold brought to the table. Good car parking even if there was a small charge, but that was fine as there was CCTV and the hotel location is very central. With the hotel pretty quiet, a reasonable room charge, it all made for a great break. Would definitely stay again.

Me and a friend visited the hotel for four nights from Monday 14th September. We shared a lovely room spacious and well laid out with all the mod cons, owing to staff shortages the rooms were only serviced on the third day but by request the room maid will clean the room and clean towels were available at all times. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was good but my only complaint was that they run out of marmalade for breakfast on the second day and we had to put up with apricot jam for the rest of our stay, why the chef didn't order more marmalade is beyond me especially for a four star hotel. Taking everything into account the Royal County Hotel was a pleasant place to stay but due to the Corona Virus I think that the staff were a bit thin on the ground.

This is not a cheap option. We were not informed that the hotel was surrounded by major roadworks. Also, the parking charge of £11 per night is pure profiteering. It should be inclusive for guests. The staff at reception were unaware that the Cathedral Tower & Castle were closed. They should know these things - they are a major tourist attraction. Customers were moving thru reception without masks as we checked in. No room service & no cleaning. No milk with in-room tea & coffee. The extractor in the room was not working. The air conditioning rattled all night long, preventing sleep. Breakfast was a disgrace. Scruffy staff, poor food availability & just not up to scratch at those prices. I could do better in a roadside café. All in all, an extremely disappointing stay. I will never go to a Marriot again & it has put us off travelling again whilst Covid prevails.

Response from Chris Miles, Other at Durham Marriott Hotel Royal County

Thank you for choosing to stay at the Durham Marriott Hotel Royal County and providing your honest feedback. Providing the highest level of hospitality is our number one priority and we sincerely apologise for falling short of meeting your expectations. The email that is sent out to all guests staying with us does explain that the bridge outside the hotel is closed due to essential maintenance work and that a diversion is in place to follow. The hotel chose the easiest route to leave the A1M when travelling either north or south bound so not to add extra confusion to any of our guests who had not stayed before and didn't’t know the area. The hotel has 150 bedrooms and only space for 85 cars, in order to manage the car parking effectively we (along with all other hotels in Durham city) have a parking tariff in place. This is to discourage non-residents for parking in valuable spaces that are needed for our hotel guests. At £11 we are also the cheapest for car parking. Regarding the local facilities, like many businesses throughout the country we are following government guidelines which change daily, this is also the case for everyone, and whilst our front office team try and stay up to date on as many local attractions as possible it is not always possible to know if something changes as we get most of our information from the attractions websites like many other people do. Once again, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We appreciate you choosing to stay with us during these unusual times.
