Appreciate that reservation was cancelled due to covid but the refund process has been a nightmare with no contact from Lumley Castle. Despite numerous emails we get the same response - we will get an urgent request to our external accountant for an update on when refund has been paid - still awaiting the update from the account. Something to consider if you make a reservation and we go into lockdown again you will be waiting along time for your money back

We stayed just for one night on the dinner, bed and breakfast deal. Lovely warm reception welcome, good explanation of new rules re COVID - anti-bac all over ! It did feel safe. Lots of social distancing measures and one way system. We had afternoon tea - fabulous - the scones were freshly baked to order. We loved this. We had our evening meal later, which was also outstanding - great spring onion bhaji, goats cheese and beetroot, I had salmon - brilliant and a side of veg which were perfectly cooked. Husband had burger - he rated it highly. We had ice cream (marmalade - very bitter and fabulous) and husband had lemon meringe - which he loved. Great service in bar (seated only obv) and in restaurant. We loved the whole stay and won't leave it so long to return this time! Thank you to all the lovely staff coping with the strange times we are in. The hotel tried hard to make things feel normal.

With Covid and all we needed a short break as a family over half term and decided on "local". Lumley Castle has been on our todo list and was just the ticket! Lovely old castle and they had sensibly implemented COVID rules so we felt safe and as protected as we could be, sanitisation, one way system, masks on for all etc. without it being an imposition, all clients seemed to be sensible. Had a great stay, excellent service from all the staff from reception, room service, restaurant, bar and even a helpful member of staff passing as we were checking out, all in all a good experience. Rooms were big, clean and warm, the 4 poster comfortable, bathrooms huge. adjoining room for our son. Plenty to do nearby as we wanted to get out and strech our legs, so lots of walks in the grounds and Riverside Park. My teenage son plays golf but the local club does npt have driving range or 9 hole but we were directed to one nearby (Cocken Lodge). If you had a partner the local course looks good and is open to visitors btw. Unforunately didn't get to do the escape room as it is run by a third party and we had difficulty booking it, but an excuse for another trip another day. The food was good as was the service, we had a breakfast and dinner package which was good value, would go again for the restaurant alone, especially if the full menu was on rather than a restricted one, wine choices were also reasonably priced and good.

We took advantage of their autumn offer, and started our stay with afternoon tea. The service and food was amazing, delicate freshly made finger sandwiches, warm scones and a good selection of other sweet treats. Bear in mind the hotel is operating under covid guidance, the staff were incredibly efficient, friendly and ensured our experience was paramount. They wore masks, sanitized regularly and thoroughly cleaned tables/chairs as guests left. Alex was very consciencious & kindly asked/reminded guest to check in on the Track&Trace App. Our room was just outstanding (we did upgrade to the King James Suite), we certainly felt like royalty with the large reception room, jacuzzi bath and 4 poster bed. We had a bottle of prosecco waiting for us along with a lovely fresh fruit platter. The room was incredibly clean, and lovely crisp white sheets on the bed. The whole hotel is very regal and we loved the grandeur and history that makes this castle so special. We had pre-dinner drinks in the library bar, then proceeded to our table for dinner. The food was amazing and they had a good selection of wines to accompany our meal. The drinks were also very reasonably priced for a luxury hotel. Breakfast in the morning was wonderful, they had a good selection of cold and hot food that was freshly cooked with quality ingredients. We asked for some extra orange juice as it was delicious, and extra toast as we ate breakfast, both were served promptly with a smile. The staff were very friendly and efficient whilst working under the new "norm" of covid. particular thanks go to Alex, Kim, (restaurant) Kate and Sarah (Library bar) and Dean & Lorraine at Breakfast. You are doing amazing and made our stay incredibly enjoyable, we look forward to coming back very soon. PS the Sticky toffee pudding is to die for :)

We stayed one night at the castle. The morning before we arrived we booked a table for dinner. Due to a slight change in our plans I rang back and asked to change the time. I was told I couldn’t and what’s more we couldn’t have the booking I’d made earlier as they were full. I moaned a little and someone said they would ring back. They did 5 hours earlier and re offered the table but by then we had decided a table was unlikely so had booked elsewhere. Frustrating as eating in the castle was one of the reasons we wanted to go. We had a superior room in the courtyard. It was very small and quite tired. particularly the bathroom was tiny. For £190 it wasn’t worth it. The WiFi didn’t work due to IT problems. Breakfast was ok but we didn’t receive toast until after we had finished eating. Overall a fantastic building but the experience was not to the same standard
