Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed for one night on freshers weekend, after moving our daughter into halls, as we live a 4 hour drive away. We chose it because it was cheap, basically, as other hotels in/nearer the city were massively expensive and also pretty much booked up. I mean, you get what you pay for! The room was fine, big, clean, and we were impressed with the ‘kitchen’ facilities. Microwave, kettle, toaster and full sized fridge, with crockery, cutlery and plenty of tea, coffee, milk, sugar, butter etc. But it’s definitely in need of some updating, being a very old building. It’s actually a pub, a very locals pub, in a pretty rough area from what we could gather. It was a Saturday night and the music was very loud, although we couldn’t hear it in our room to be fair. But we had no desire to stay down for a drink as the locals weren’t friendly and were definitely rough. Not that we’re snobs at all, I just wouldn’t have felt safe. The bar staff were lovely though. Don’t think we’d stay again but it did the job for one night.

To say it needs a complete refit is an understatement. The staff are friendly and the bar on a busy night would be ok if you were a local if not then your taking a chance . I would definitely not recommend this place

Cheap and cheerful. You get what you pay for in life. Checked in and a lovely woman explained the rules etc then showed me to my room. Nice room, good bed, bathroom etc. Tv with fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle and plenty of cutlery too. Supply of tea, coffee and milk. One bad bit was the hot radiators without being able to open a window. On the whole though, a good nights stay at a cheap price. Would deffo stay again

Visiting family I stayed in the Hardwick. It was a friendly hotel about a local pub with a pool table and music. Couldn't here the noise from my room at all. Room 3 was clean with a fridge, microwave, kettle & plates cups etc for two people also there was tea, coffee, sugar in sachets and milk in fridge to start you off. There was 2 single beds in my room and the large bathroom was next door which didn't faze me. I stayed for 3 nights and all the locals made me so welcome as did the proprietor Glen. I would definately stay here again. Cheap & cheerful with the friendliness of bar maids and staff made my stay very comfortable 😁 Tv & Wi-Fi was great too 😁

Rooms are lovely and clean, equipped with everything you could want. Pub is lively and full of character and history. No complaints! Drinks are very reasonably priced. Good location for visiting Hartlepool or Durham. Very short walk from the beach.

We had a warm welcome any were notified we'd been upgraded to apartment 2. It was really clean and comfortable although situated in a terrible untidy area. We were attending a family function close by and so it was really hand for us. We'd use again if in the area.

We visited the area while attending the Fake Festival at Peter Lee. The Hotel is a very large pub with 5 rooms above the bar though to the rear of building so no noise. Everything was perfect for us. The lady who checked us in also took the time to show us around the Hotel and explained where everything is. The room itself was very large with x2 beds, tv, wardrobes, mini fridge, microwave, Kettle, tea/coffee. Chairs. Free Wifi. Everything you would need for self-catering though they can also provide Breakfast. Once we were settled in the massive room, we headed straight down to the bar. Everyone we talked to was very friendly and they made you feel welcome. If you're visiting the area and need somewhere, cheap, cheerful and welcoming to stay then this is the place.

I knew this as a pub in my childhood when visiting family. Felt like coming home when I checked in and all felt very familiar. Room 1 was large, clean and comfortable with everything you need for a comfortable stay. Decor is slightly dated but its an old building so that's to be expected and the view from the room was over old yards and workshops. The kitchenette was a bonus and a convenience store across the road makes it easy to provide your own breakfast, if you like. What sets it apart was the welcome from very friendly staff and regulars. They treated us as locals and nothing was too much trouble. The nearby beach and cliff tops provide good walking opportunities. Not posh, not grand, just good value for money. Would stay again.
