Returned for a 3 night staying after staying here in October last year. Karen is a superb hostess; being so attentive to guests needs and running a beautiful super clean house. What makes it great is the limited number of guests as she only uses 2 of the 3 available rooms at a time making for a personalized stay. We stayed in the Marr Room which is huge with a super king size bed, dressing room and large shower room. Luxury touches like a nepresso machine and toiletries by Noble Isle ( as used in The Balmoral ) add to the 5 star experience. The breakfast are wonderful, especially the french toast served with fresh fruit and creme fresh. The large boot room is ideal for wet clothing and we were able to store our mountain bikes there when not using them.

We stayed for 3 nights in September and cannot recommend more highly. Our room was spacious with a lovely comfy bed, but the highlight really was the breakfast - as good, if not better, than a 5 star hotel, the choice and quality was excellent. Very friendly owners who were only too happy to help with suggestions of what to do and where to go. Great location to explore the Cairngorms. It's also worth noting this was very covid safe and taken seriously, so you felt very comfortable.

Visited for 4 nights with the aim of walking and biking the surrounding area. The house is a grand stone built builiding with large gardens situated a one minute walk from the square. We communicated with Karen before the stay due to uncertainty about travel due to covid restrictions, with new measures being announced a couple of days before our trip. Karen was very helpful and reassuring. When restuarants had to close before 6pm as part of the regulations the day before our trip she offered dinner from a pre booked seledtion which we took on 2 nights, thus allowing us to enjoy full days outdoors. The house itself is historic and has been sympathetically restored to offer excellent facilities. We stayed in the Marr room which comprised of a large bedroom with superking sized bed with windows on two aspects making it bright and light. It had a dressing room with desk and nepresso machine and kettle. The bathroom was large with a walk in shower. Karen was an excellent host with lots of local knowledge which led us to cycle part of the nearby Dava Way. The food provided for breakfasts and dinner was excellent my favourite being the brioche french toast. The boot room was great for storing our mountain bikes indoors at night and leaving our wet/muddy gear. Karen has an excellent system to ensure covid precautions are maintained. With only 2 of the 3 available rooms used social distancing is not an issue.

I'd talked to Karen at length on the phone prior to our visit so I knew we were going to get along. She's a lovely lady and like her husband Alick, goes out of her way to make your stay all you want it to be. Both have a great sense of humour which I find an absolute necessity when you're spending a week at a smaller hotel. The house is beautiful, most of the houses in the town are. The stone they're built from is very attractive. The lawns are pristine too. You knew the inside was going to be immaculate and it was. It's a home you'd be proud and privileged to own. We stayed in the Marr which is so private you could play bagpipes in there and not bother anyone ! There's an annexe cum dressing room prior to the main room and I spent quite a few hours on my PC in here while my wife had the TV on. A real bonus. The Mount Barker allows you to store things like golf equipment in their boot room so along with the additional space in the annexe we were able to keep the bedroom extremely tidy. The Marr is gorgeous, light floods in from windows on opposite sides of the room highlighting the quality and class of the decor, furnishings and fittings. The bed was unbelievably comfy. I'm an early riser by nature but nearly missed breakfast a couple of times. If the Cairngorms didn't have so much to offer I think I could have stayed in that bed until lunchtime. The bathroom again was immaculate. Instant piping hot water and a lovely rainfall shower. So welcoming after a hard day's walking. The breakfast is delicious, whatever you choose. It takes something special to tempt me away from a traditional cooked plateful ( the haggis was exceptional ) but the French toast just pipped it. Good enough that I'm looking for a recipe when I finish this review. Once again light floods into the dining room through a huge window, the view is beautiful and the tableware very classy. I hope we'll eventually be out of this Covid crisis and what I'm going to say next will make unnecessary reading. But Karen takes the pandemic very seriously and her attention to protocols is meticulous. At no point did we ever feel we were any less safe at the Mount Barker than we are in our own house. Some people say the hotel is 5 minutes from the main street. They must be crawling there or have drunk too much on the whisky trails. Amenities aplenty are literally one minute's walk. A good supermarket, numerous eateries and all else you might need. We enjoyed many a great evening picnic by picking up food locally and then driving to the Spey. The hosts have a lot of info' and contacts and will give plentiful help if needed. We had a fantastic holiday and the Mount Barker was a major reason for that. We would normally say a week is long enough these days to be away but my wife just didn't want to come home. Neither did I. A smashing hotel run by an equally smashing couple.

As we drove in the driveway of Mount Barker, we knew immediately our stay would be memorable! Karen, our host, stood outside and greeted us, while husband Alex helped bring in our luggage. Then a pleasant chat with both as they served us tea in their comfortable breakfast lounge with a warm fire from the fireplace! What a beginning to an outstanding stay .... Karen was the consummate host ...friendly, helpful, engaging and a great cook! She offered help with all aspects of our trip ... places to hike, guide books, places to eat, making reservations, shopping suggestions for gifts (I did indeed purchase a Scottish ‘spurtle’ at the local hardware store!). Mount Barker is a beautiful house and beautifully decorated. Our room was spectacular ... large, airy, great comfortable king sized bed, large bathroom with the best shower we’ve experienced anywhere! The grounds surrounding the house are delightful as well. Location is perfect ...just a short stroll to the High Street. As mentioned, Karen is a great cook ....her breakfast menu is mouth watering and we enjoyed various selections over our four day stay... definitely try the French Toast! And her porridge is outstanding! We really enjoyed our stay, thanks to Karen ..... her engaging personality, thoughtfulness and continuous help made this part of our U.K. trip the most memorable! Thanks Karen .... we hope to return in the very near future! Jim & Joyce Lancaster, PA
