Holdsworth House is a beautiful Jacobean manor built in 1633, which has been owned and run by the Pearson family for over 50 years. It's a four star hotel and historic manor standing in stunning, secluded gardens and is just three miles north of Halifax. It feels a world apart from the bustle of everyday life and is a perfect choice for accommodation, weddings and conferences. In this beautiful old house you'll find open fires, cosy lounges, fine antiques and tapestries that create a sense of history and comfort. The 36 charming bedrooms are all ensuite and have all been individually furnished. Dinner is served by candlelight in the 17th Century, oak-paneled award-winning restaurant whilst the Long Bar has a simpler brasserie style menu.

We booked as a party of 17 family members. It was not a special occasion or an event but we were treated as if it was. From the very first moment that we arrived every member of staff that dealt with us displayed a very friendly, welcoming and sincere manner. While speaking to us good eye contact and smiles were used to illustrate that they were fully focused on us at all times. The room we had been allocated was laid out splendidly. The table looked very attractive as soon as we entered. Not all of our party had arrived on time as some had travelled for hours to get there but the staff member that dealt with us seemed more than happy to wait until we were all ready. Frank was the member of staff who served us throughout the afternoon and we all of us agreed that he was an absolute credit to the company. He was very attentive and friendly and was able to maintain a very good rapport with the adults as well as the children in the room. Nothing was too much trouble and the service throughout was seamless. More than anything my lasting memory will be that Frank displayed a willingness to help and it appeared that our comfort and enjoyment was important to him. To get to the food, we were very impressed with everything that was served. The hot drinks were freshly made. The sandwiches were also fresh and both gluten free and vegetarian options were available. Personally I cannot recall the last time I tasted a scone as delicious as the ones that were served today. At this point I will point out that I am a frequent afternoon tea participant in various locations throughout the country so I have plenty of experience in this area! Frank was very attentive and friendly but his presence was not obtrusive in any way. We were not rushed at all during our visit which made us appreciate the wonderful setting as well as the food and service. Overall we would not hesitate recommending this location to others. Our experience today would definitely encourage a return.

We stayed at this hotel over the weekend and really enjoyed it. Now as for the hotel itself it is a beautiful place, the staff are all lovely and can't do enough for you and all the food from breakfast, the meal at night to the cream tea were all amazing, and we found it very relaxing with lovely gardens. Now for the room! A huge letdown. We stayed in the Bridal suite and if I was to spend my wedding evening there it would put me off booking my wedding! very poor, shabby unappealing awful decor and bathroom in great need of a total refurbishment. We also had no slippers and no water in the room to drink which is poor for a 4 star hotel. Also very stingy with the toiletries tiny shampoo no conditioner or body lotion which is normally provided. These things need attention, especially when the room cost £292 for 1 night.

Have wanted to stay at this hotel for quite a few months. We satayed in a house room which was beautiful spotlessly clean and included the bath i had requested as well as a huge shower. The room was big enough to include space for two comfortable chairs which was a bonus because we had always intended to spend chill out time relaxing and reading. The food we had on the both nights was amazing and beautifully cooked. Served by a beautiful girl who got the level of friendliness and professionalism spot on. Im sorry i didnt catch her name but i would like to wish her ever success for her future at Leeds Uni. I have worked through Covid 19 so going out again hasnt filled me with quite the same panic as it has some but the measures put in place by the hotel were discrete but spot on. All in all a wonderful much needed and much enjoyed break. Im sure we will return even if its just for a night as its so close to home. Thank you

We visited on a Wednesday lunchtime to have an afternoon tea. The building is beautiful and the staff were warm and welcoming, once seated tea orders were taken then the afternoon tea itself arrived.

We were both really hungry so were pleased to see a cake stand laden with sandwiches, cakes, scones and other sweet treats. The sandwiches were ok, only the beef had much flavour and for me the red onion in there was far to sweet. The bread was also a strange texture, not to either of our tastes. The garnish on top of the sandwiches was ok, but a bit limp and a few of the leaves had gone slimy.

The first sweet thing we tried was the panna cotta, it was more like a small bowl of cream and did not have much taste to it. Next were some little biscuits, which were really delicious. Then a chocolate cake which was very dry, the boozy cherry on top was needed and gave the underwhelming sponge some interest. The small iced dome cake was stale, the icing was really sweet, not a well balanced cake at all.

On to the scones, these were a huge disappointment, on trying to spread anything on them they just crumbled into loads of small pieces. By this point I was totally fed up and just wanted to go home. We took what we did not eat away as we do not like waste.

Over all it was not the beautiful afternoon tea we imagined we would be having. Having won this in a charity auction we did not complain as we would not want the generous gift provider to feel embarrassed.

Dear millieoaw, we are sad to read of your disappointment in the quality of your food, for whch we can only apologise. It is quite out of the norm and your feedback will be seen by the team for consideration. The rye bread sandwich is usually a guest favourite, but we will be more than happy to offer an alternative when its not to a guest's liking. Again, thank you for your important feedback – it allows us to investigate where we can improve our offering.

A lovely hotel where we have stayed time and time again: however, despite being 'frequent fliers' here the staff would never think so! Check in was fine and the man on the desk was attentive and welcoming. He told us he would make us a reservation in the bar area so we could take along our dog.
Arrived at the bar and saw only one table for 2 reserved by the fireplace. Asked the bartender if the reservation was for us, he immediately said 'no'. Didn't ask our name or say anything else. Ordered our drinks, which took ages for my G & T to arrive as he had no lemons. Eventually my drink came, with no apology for the delay. We decided to eat in the restaurant and you'd think the bar tender was a rabbit stuck in headlights.
Eventually another young woman arrived and we asked her if there was a restaurant menu. She brought it to us. Please Holdsworth, a little more direction to aide the staff in how they should support guests with ordering in the bar for restaurant dining/ reserving a table in the restaurant for us. We eventually headed to the dining room independently and carried our drinks with us. We finished our main course and sat there for at least 30 minutes. Nobody asked us how the food was, if we would like more drinks or even if we would like a desert. We couldn't believe the sheer lack of attention and decided to return to our room. The bar tender was stood in the entrance chatting merrily away to one of the waitresses, completely in their own world and no desire to check out the restaurant with only 2 full tables. Their personal conversation was much more important than any client!! When he saw us he had the audacity to ask us if we would like desert!! Please!! My husband informed him that we had finished our meal 30 minutes ago and had been waiting,
Holdsworth Hall, sort this out. Your bartender/ waiter was a huge let down to an establishment we have visited so many times. So much for being loyal customers for well over 16 years! Quite shocking and we deserve better!

Step back in time to the age of fine dining, kept alive by the staff of Holdsworth House Hotel. Would that we lived nearer, it would become our chosen place to mark special family occasions or to enjoy a special couples treat.

Robert Louis Stevenson wrote that “it is better to travel hopefully than to arrive.” Our dinner was more than we could have hoped for after a 200 mile drive. Retaining many of the house’s original features, little wonder it has been chosen for period television dramas including Gentleman Jack and Last Tango in Halifax. Interestingly the Beatles stayed there early on their career when performing at Halifax Alhambra.

We enjoyed cocktails before dining, Sue a Tom Collins me my favourite Whiskey Sour, probably the best I have ever been served…other than by myself indulgently at home, a home from home pre dining experience.

Our dinner, seated at comfortable chairs before oak gate leg tables in the wood panelled dining room with stone mullioned windows, was an intimate experience ideal to mark our Golden Wedding. Chef cannot be praised too highly for our asparagus and steak tartar starters and chicken and salmon main courses, the flavours superb, exactly what one wants when dining out, something better than you could possibly prepare at home. The staff natural yet professional and caring.

Breakfast was all that we could have wanted and more before setting off on another 200 mile journey further south.

Thank you Holdsworth House and Staff.

My partner and I stayed for 2 nights 11-13 September and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The room was very comfortable and spotlessly clean. We ate dinner both nights and had delicious meals with excellent table service . Our waiter Frank was especially attentive and nothing was too much trouble.
There was discreet attention to covid 19 regulations and in no way distracted from our time there.
We will definitely be returning.

I booked a romantic break in an executive suite and asked to be allocated the suite with the most "wow " factor as it was my wife's birthday. Sadly when we entered the room ( no 12 ) our faces dropped - rather than period charm it had tired 70's style decor and furnishings ( with the exception of the coffee machine and TV ) and the carpet was well past the end of its life. The thin waffle bathrobes and flaking paint in the bathroom only compounded the disappointment - it was certainly not the luxury we expected for over £300 per night. The dining rooms were much more of the character that we had expected and we had a pleasant meal and digestive in the bar afterwards. The old part of the hotel was full of character but sadly lacked the attention to detail that is so necessary for a really uplifting experience - the crockery for breakfast was a charming mismatch of bone china spoilt by bog standard earthenware cups. Whist we appreciate that hospitality has had a very tough year and the staff were enthusiastic if a little under trained, the lack of attention to the finer details really compromised the experience,

I picked this hotel because the photos of this gorgeous Jacobean Manor looked stunning. We stayed for one night in September and the building is beautiful, it felt very safe with all the Covid regulations in place. I booked an executive suite and the bed was very comfortable but the room was chilly and featureless in a newish block. We sat in the bar area before dinner and only one other couple were present, no atmosphere at all. We were ushered upstairs to a small room with 4 tables set for couples, the room was again cold and lacking any atmosphere or nice decor, the menu was very limited, sometimes it felt like our room had been forgotten about. The following morning we had breakfast in a beautiful room downstairs, full of interesting features and architecture, I wish we could have eaten there the previous night. Overall I felt very disappointed by the experience, such a shame.

Dear Melh13, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your experience. It is very much appreciated. I am sorry to hear that you left feeling disappointed with your stay. All of our bedrooms are located in the newer section of the building but we have always endeavoured to ensure they are furnished in such a way that is in keeping with the age of the original building. Due to the recent restrictions it has been necessary for us to use all of our restaurant rooms and this includes our two wonderful rooms on the first floor. These rooms are in the original house and we like to think they are packed full of the charm which comes with a Jacobean manor, i am sorry if you did not feel this was the case. Please be assured we will use your comments when we are considering our next round of refurbishments.
