Stayed here overnight for daughters wedding. The staff were excellent and very helpful. They were happy to let photographer and hair and make up to attend and let us park our car until after the wedding. Our evening meal was fantastic and so was the breakfast. The only thing that spoilt it a bit was a man talking outside all night and we didn’t sleep very well.

So, I don't normally write reviews, but here goes! We got married in Feb this year, and due to my husband getting a new job & COVID-19 we hadn't managed to book anywhere so when the opportunity come up about having a night away, my husband and I jumped at the chance, Mother in law having our daughter and our puppy. We booked to have Room 14, as our parents had been before and also my husbands brother had just stayed the month previous and had amazing time there. Lovely large secure car park which is free, you have to give your registration to reception at check in. We arrived early due to having lunch and look around in Colchester, unfortunately our room wasn't ready which wasn't a problem as we wanted a few cocktails in the bar. Reception checked us in, signed relevant paperwork for our stay. Reception did try and charge us again for our room, although we had paid when booked our room. You also have to pay £50.00 deposit for any extra/breakages. (We wasn't aware of this charge either). Receptionist showed us to the bar area, where we were saved by the barman. Staff very professional, friendly and will do anything for you. By now we had a few drinks at the bar, and we could hear other guests checking in and their rooms not being ready. Waitresses were telling bar staff that people were entitled to complimentary drinks. Our room was ready at 3:20pm however at no point was we offered complimentary drinks due to us waiting? Maybe we should have waited until 3pm and then we would have been offered, but because we were spending money in the bar, maybe they didn't want to offer us a free drink for our wait? Room was lovely and large, clean, was pretty impressed with how big the television was to be fair. Lovely nice bath, so remember your bubble bath if your saying in room 14! Ordered room service, although we did struggle. No where in the room told us the number we had to call to order, we guessed and dialled 0 which took us through to reception where she took our order and past through to the kitchen. Room service was pretty quick, I order the chicken burger and chips and was amazing, Thank you to the chef who cooked this! Both my husband and I didn't have a good night sleep, we thought the bed was very uncomfortable, although you can pleased everyone with the mattress. We had breakfast included in our room. you didn't have to book, just go downstairs to the restaurant and give your room number between 07:30 and 11:30. Again, staff were very professional and couldn't be more happier with the service we received, however breakfast wasn't explained to us. We were given a menu and just asked what we wanted. We didn't know whether we could have pastries and then a cooked breakfast too or whether it was just one or the other. We felt like this could have been explained to us and we could have enjoyed our breakfast better. Check out was a bit confusing to be fair. Receptionist tried to charge us for breakfast although included in our room. The receptionist then wanted to charge us for our room service instead of taking it of £50.00 which we paid on check in. She told us that was for extras too. We had to pay for our room service separate and then wait for the money to be refunded. When checking the amount on our receipt we also noticed that we had been charged extra for room service, again no point was informed that this was going to be an extra charge. We looked everywhere within the menu too, (Even the small print) because we were looking at how to order the food. Bit disappointing to be fair. Overall we had an alright stay, could have been much better. The only reason we booked this hotel is that we had good feedback from all our family and friends who have stayed here prior to us booking. I personally wouldn't recommend this hotel to friends and family if I am completely honest. This was the 1st time since February that we had stayed away and I couldn't say I really enjoyed my stay.

Visited this hotel for a nice night away, booking was okay however they tried to get us to upgrade to the romance package which we declined. When we got to the hotel they said that we had the romance package of which I told them we was not booked for it. They took a large payment at check in (room price and £50 deposit) and then made us pay for the room again when we left and said we would get the first payment back within 3-5 working days. The room was nice and the bed was comfortable however I was woken early from slamming doors and the cleaning trolley going down the corridor. The meal was lovely and service was good. The bar shut at 23:30 and we had no other option than to go to bed. Breakfast was very disappointing, was over cooked and service was slow. Would not rush back here

We had afternoon tea, £25 per head. Choice of vegan, veggie, gentleman’s ( all savoury) and normal. The sandwiches were super and we were offered to change or swap any fillings so one of our party chose all smoked salmon. One was particularly nice with a mild curried filling with nuts. Scones were ample fresh and warm. The cakes deserve special mention. All made on the premises! High class patisserie made to high standard. Delicious. We had to bring some away. Service and ambience lovely. Very tasteful screens have been fitted between tables, or you could eat outside on the terrace. We shall be back. Probably the best afternoon tea I’ve had.....and I’ve been to The Ritz and Linthwaite Hall in Cumbria 5*, and Sofitel in Haymarket, London, among others.
