The Knead Group have mastered the art of creating a new dining experience in unusual times. David and Kelly, with the team, gave a warm greeting and perfect ambience on our return to the dining out experience we have sorely missed. In the Engine Shed you will find a well oiled machine.... excellent fine food (the medium steak cooked to perfection with a scrummy stilton sauce accompaniment) thirst quenching beer (Tribute a delight to the palate) rounded off with a zingy desert. In surroundings decorated with customary character items (not to mention a feature fireplace!) you find yourself forgetting that you’re sat in a marquee outside. Heaters to take the chill off the evening air, comfy high back seats, carpets, zoned areas... all these things combine to show the “extra mile” taken to create a fresh new dining experience. Well done everyone... Team Crown deserve a pat on the back.…
Visited today with my Mum and enjoyed drinks and food. Staff so friendly and helpful. All social distancing and hand sanitisers in place. Great atmosphere what they have done in marquee and outside. Really recommend going.
My husband and I dining here for lunch and we wasn’t disappointed one bit staff were friendly and it was a safe environment with them taking our order from the table. All food we ordered was very tasteful yummy some things we felt didn’t work together but on a whole it all tasted absolutely amazing! The chicken pate was by far the best I have ever tried, I could have happily sat at ate it all day! We will be back for sure!
We stayed here recently and absolutely loved it. This place is special due to the wonderful friendly staff. Our room was clean if a bit tired but none of this matters if there is a good atmosphere and there is. The Crown is very popular with locals and they have a lovely courtyard which beautiful plants which is a quiet spot for coffee or drinks. We enjoyed supper and breakfast in the restaurant. It's an unpretentious good value stop. Try it!
Just about managed to get in an overnight stay to see the lovely ancient town of Stamford before seemingly the country locks down again, and chose The Crown based on reviews. Clearly these are challenging times for all, and it really isn't easy for the hospitality industry to find a way to make it work, particularly when working with very old buildings and inflexible layouts. The Crown has done well to devise a one-way system, but unfortunately not all stick to it, staff included. Check-in was quick and efficient, and the lady kindly showed us to our rooms. The rooms were good enough, with comfy beds, and a very good, powerful shower. We would have preferred better ventilation though. Windows didn't seem to open at all, and the room got very hot and stuffy. Interesting to see a floor fan set up at the end of October, but that doesn't provide the fresh air we wanted. We booked for dinner and the spacing of the tables towards the back of the restaurant made us feel safe. Unfortunately our waiter wasn't very warm and personable which grated a bit. Food was very good in general, but the supposedly "twice-cooked chips" were barely cooked once and I had to leave them. Didn't complain because I didn't mind saving the calories, but as part of a 30-quid main course, you expect better without having to say something. Best part was breakfast. It really was fantastic, generous and delicious, and served by a friendly and cheerful lady. This absolutely makes all the difference. She should perhaps have a word with the chap who did the dinner service on the Wednesday night. Overall it was a good stay, but might just try the George or go back to the William Cecil next time.…
