THERE were so many good and bad points about the Roebuck that it was difficult to know where to start this review. So I'll deal with the good points first which were very friendly and extremely helpful staff, a lovely period pub area with wooden beams, a very good evening meal and an excellent breakfast in the restaurant which also served extensive Indian meals at night. Nothing was too much trouble for Reception who handled several queries for me including booking me a taxi to the railway station. Top marks for all that. My room was small and compact and it had a wealth of facilities from a kettle and coffee making facilities to a suitcase stand. Unfortunately my room also came with an extremely annoying tapping-clicking-dripping sort of noise which I could neither pin down or do anything about. I even switched the radiator off to see if it was that but it wasn't. Still don't know what it was -- did report it to staff -- but it cost me several hours sleep. Other annoyances included my mattress seemingly being on a slight slant to one side which gave the impression you might slide out of bed and on to the floor while I could hear other people in the room next door and the room above me, both talking, shifting things and walking about. Two tiles were broken in the shower but poor maintenance -- as other reviewers have said -- was the main negative for the Roebuck. Surrounding gardens hadn't seen any love, care or attention for years. Saplings have sprung up next to building walls which are slowly being taken over by ivy which is so invasive it has actually grown through the surrounding of one large corridor window. Another corridor window seemed to have broken and been crudely boarded up. Undergrowth in other areas has simply been clumsily cut and the branches left to lie on the ground while large clumps of brambles have totally taken over one corner in the angle of buildings as well as growing into huge garden clumps. Corridor carpets are faded and worn, exterior paintwork is either flaking or has come off altogether, one double glazed window in my bedroom had blown with condensation inside it and corridor floors often creaked loudly although, fortunately, not outside my room. All in all, I would return to stay here but only if the Roebuck fitted my needs which it just about did for this trip. I'd think twice about a long stay here.…
We were visiting friends in Knebworth and looking for a place to stay, we booked in at the Roebuck and then we read some reviews that were less than complimentary so we were unsure what to expect. We need not worry the staff here both in the hotel reception and cosy bar were friendly and attentive. We stayed in Room 102 a lovely nice double, it was a little dated but clean, tidy and a comfy double bed. The tv was modern and plenty of channels and tea and coffee making facilities so we had no complaints and were very happy with our choice. We stayed for breakfast plenty of choice , well cooked and good value. So a good experience and we shall return and next time try the Indian restaurant as the menu looked appealing with many different dishes away from the normal dishes you see .
.Great venue with very helpful staff. Reception staff were efficient and cooperative as well.. Food was hot tasty and well presented. Surely a place we would visit again.the food in the restaurant is simply great. Very unusual from the other Indian restaurants. .
I stayed over night here and the staff couldn’t do more to make me feel welcome and at ease. The hotel is in a real need of updating and modernisation but I guess with most hotels they are also struggling financially, but the service I received had made me overlook some cosmetic work. Food was amazing, try the Indian menu you won’t be disappointed
Stayed at the Roebuck Inn for one night recently. On arrival the staff were very helpful. My wife and I enjoyed an Indian meal in the dining room. The waiter was prompt and knowledgeable. The food was excellent. Our room was clean but a little tired looking. Not sure what the boards across the windows were for. We shall most certainly stay again.
