Although selecting this hotel for its location and decent reviews, we suffered the same as some other reviewers and found that although having a confirmed booking there was no room for us on arrival. Also the hotel does not seem to be open mid afternoon, so despite arriving at a reasonable time (3.30pm) and hammering on the door it was a while before we even found out that there was no room. We were offered a room in the nearby L'Ajasserie de Orcival, across the village square, so are not able to comment on bedrooms, but took meals at the Hotel Notre Dame. The meals were OK, with decent portions, and a bit of a sideshow from the owner during the evening meal! Wish we understood more French, as everyone seemed to be enjoying it - maybe they were laughing at us as the only non-French in the restaurant! Although English is offered at the hotel it is extremely limited. On checking out the cost of the meals and rooms at the alternative location were combined, apologies once again offered with a bottle of wine as well. Location is beautiful, but if you don't like last minute changes to a plan and don't speak good French then you have been warned.…
We very much enjoyed staying here. Our room was simply furnished and a little old fashioned but had everything we needed plus a great view over the basilica. The hotel owner Marie Laure was warm, friendly, and laughing and joking with the guests all the time. Good food in the restaurant and reasonably priced with excellent service so we ate there all of the 3 nights we spent at the hotel. Breakfast was also very good.
We selected this hotel from the Michelin guide and booked 2 months in advance of our visit. I called 3 days before our planned visit to confirm. When we arrived we were re-directed to a non-Michelin hotel. I complained and was told that this was unfortunately an administrative error. Whilst waiting , however, I saw a hand written list on the reception table that clearly showed several potential guests being re-allocated to Hotel Le Cascade, a non Michelin hotel just down the road. We use the Michelin guide because we expect that Michelin requires certain standards. To benefit from exposure in Michelin and then to pass off guests to a non Michelin hotel smacks of fraud. I am not in a position to comment on the subsequent categories on TripAdvisor as we never stayed at our selelcted hotel!…
We came across this hotel through a review in a national newspaper - pity the reporter didn't tell the hotel owner! Marie Laure was so completely delighted to know that her family owned hotel had made the UK press - and broke into song in her enthusiasm! This was a truly warm, welcoming and homely place...we felt like family, were treated like long lost relatives, and dined copiously. Rooms are spacious, comfortable and warm, within the sound of the Basilica bells, and you are in the heart of the stunning volcanic scenery of the Auvergne. A secret find, that should be more widely known - but we hope to keep it to ourselves! We'll be back!
An older hotel in a beautiful little town with a view directly onto the basilica, creaky floors but otherwise good soundproofing, large room, very good regional cuisine for dinner, restaurant a bit cramped in the French tradition. The kids are taking over from the previous owner but so far so good, equally friendly and helpful. Street parking not a problem. Reasonable price.
