A nice and clean hotel full of history. We were with a baby and a dog, and the pet room had food/water bowls, towels and treats for the dog, which is a plus. In addition, there was a cot ready in the room when we had requested it in advance. The breakfast was really good. The only minus was that the access to the pet rooms was only from the outside, and there was no barrier-free access, so the prams had to be carried up and down the stairs every time when entering or leaving the room.

A wonderful hotel that has been renovated respecting the milieu of the old prison. Very nicely decorated. The room is spacious and clean, the beds are good. The soundproofing works, practically no sounds could be heard in the room. The service is absolutely first-class, both at the reception and in the lobby bar Hilarius. The drinks are great! A reasonably priced parking space is available in the parking garage under construction. A brochure about Kakolanmäki can be seen in the room, where it was told, for example, the history of the prison and Kakolanmäki's other offerings. This was nice to read and opened up the area in a completely different way! As hotel customers, Kakola Spa received a significant discount, which was a great thing. The spa is truly an experience.

The hotel would deserve 5 stars, but 1 reduction starts from the breakfast. This did not match the high standard of the hotel. There was little to offer at breakfast, compared to many other Finnish hotels. The ones served hot were cold and the fruits practically inedible. Utilized Kakolanmäki's food (coffee roaster and bakery), which was a wonderful thing.

Anyway, first class hotel, really worth a visit!

I stayed with my dog in the Standard pet room with its own entrance. The room was really spacious and clean! There were small drinking and food bowls for the dog, a paw towel, a treat and a ball, as well as poop bags. Good outdoor terrains in the surroundings and the funicular was a convenient way to get to the shore of Aurajoki for an ice cream. I also walk a short distance. The beds and pillows are excellent. Room service excellent. The food is delicious! I recommend breakfast ordered to the room. The courtyard is cozy, where it was easy to stop by for a refreshing drink with the dog. The room has a large flat-screen TV, a coffee machine, a kettle and all the necessary detergents. A real escape from everyday life in the fine historical surroundings of your hometown. The spa is also excellent. Thank you!

The Kakola hill is a nice location and the bakery-café Bageri Å and the Kakola brewery on the hill's central courtyard are excellent. Reaching the hilltop by funicular and guessing whether or not the funicular will work this time is part of the experience - even part of the fun if one is not in a hurry or has no problem walking up the hill instead. But finding the hotel was surprisingly tricky: arriving by foot from the funicular on a dark evening, the way to the hotel was not clearly indicated on the Kakola hill. At one point, we stood in front of a snowed-in sign apparently pointing towards the hotel, not being sure which dark path we were supposed to follow. We also met other people wondering where the hotel was. For people arriving by car, the arrival might be easier. On a bright summer evening it will also surely be easier to find one's way.

The hotel itself was all right, the staff was friendly, and the spa was nice with a variety of different saunas and pools. The beds were comfortable. We were happy to find a soda water maker in the room, and appreciated the fact that it was from a Finnish company (My Soda). The locally made soaps and creams provided in the bathrooms were lovely. In our opinion, the prison theme could have been highlighted even more in the design of the rooms.

But having bought the stay as a hotel&spa package, we were surprised to find out that the spa was in a different building within a 5-minute walk from the hotel. This might be all right on a warm summer evening, but having to walk there - and especially back to the hotel after the spa - on a slippery, partially poorly lit hill path on a dark and cold winter evening is not great. We love walking and trekking, but not after a spa - the relaxation from the spa wears off quickly when one has to strain all one's muscles to avoid falling on the ice.

The breakfast was nice, and it was great to find tasty oat rolls from the neighboring Bageri Å. Things that could improve the breakfast experience further are to have warm milk available for the coffee, and perhaps a few more types of cheese in addition to the two sliced cheeses.

Kakola Hotel in Turku is a unique and fascinating place to stay, offering a blend of history and modern comfort. Housed in a former prison, the hotel retains much of its original architecture, which adds a distinctive character to the experience. The rooms are stylishly designed, combining contemporary furnishings with historical elements, creating a cozy yet intriguing atmosphere.

Guests often praise the hotel's amenities, including a well-equipped gym and a sauna that provides a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring the city. The on-site restaurant serves delicious meals, with a focus on local ingredients, and the breakfast buffet is particularly noteworthy for its variety and quality.

The location is another highlight, situated just a short distance from Turku's main attractions, making it easy to explore the city's rich history and vibrant culture. The staff is known for being friendly and accommodating, enhancing the overall experience. Overall, Kakola Hotel offers a memorable stay that combines a unique setting with excellent service and amenities.

Last January I had an unforgettable experience at Hotel Kakola in Turku. Just arriving inside the prison walls was exciting. The hotel's stylish interior and the buzz of history created a unique atmosphere.

Our room was a former prison cell that was decorated with a modern touch. The old prison windows and solid walls brought a touch of history and charisma. We slept excellently in a comfortable bed and enjoyed the delicacies of the breakfast buffet in the hotel's restaurant.

There was enough to do in the hotel's own premises for our days. We were able to relax in the spa and enjoy the wonderful saunas. We also went to taste local delicacies at the hotel's brewery and restaurant. In the evenings, we sat in the atmospheric bar and enjoyed drinks.

The staff was friendly and helpful. They were happy to tell about the history of the prison and give tips on the sights of Turku. The hotel's location was excellent, just a short walk from the Aurajoki beach and the center of Turku.

Hotel Kakola offered us an unforgettable weekend full of history, style and pleasure. I highly recommend this unique hotel to anyone looking for something different and experiential.

New, good condition, clean room. We got a room (rather big) on the first floor in the new building so there was not any atmosphere of an old jailhouse. Shortest way to room was going outside, which was not so nice during the winter time. Be aware also that the Spa is not in the same building and you need to walk around 300 meters to get there, which is not so nice during the winter time. Reservation is also needed. Remember to book it as early as possible to get access in time you like to get in. Going down to the river you can take the funicular which is free of charge. I think it was not axactly value for the money, as there's plenty of other choices in Turku.

Great atmosphere, location, cozy rooms, comfortable beds, great service. Breakfast is included and a lot of parking space in the new parking garage (Easy Park app or pay at the Hotel). Spa is definitely an experience and only 20€ / guest for hotel visitors. Note, the Spa is 200 meters from the Hotel and underground, built into a granite like a cave. Definitely worth seeing.

Location of the Hotel is great. In the center of Turku up on a hill, between the castle in the west and the market square in the east. Walk down from the hill to the riverfront and you arrive at river ferry Föri, running across the Aura river. Crossing takes about 2 minutes.

From that spot you can take a turn to right and walk all the way to the castle and ferry terminal, 1,4 km 19 minutes. Along the way you see museum ships and Forum Marinum (Maritime museum).

Or turn left and walk towards market square and Turku cathedral, all the way to the cathedral takes about 30 minutes 2,3 km, but there are museums like Pharmacy Museum and Aboa Vetus along the way.

Instead of walking, you can rent a bike from the hotel and then it takes only 4 minutes to castle and 9 minutes to cathedral from Föri riding a bike.

Nice room with balcony facing sunrise over river (exceptional February weather allowed morning coffee on balcony warmly dressed), interesting history, friendly staff and delicious breakfast including croissants filled with jam and whipped cream. The Funicular was working making trips up- and downhill easier. Conveniently close were Kakola spa and restaurant Kakolanruusu, both of which can be recommended. Totally relaxing one night stay in Turku.

The hotel is stylish. Located on top of a hill. It's difficult to get there and car parking costs separately.
The spa is also available for an additional fee. I understood from the brochures that the sand room in the spa was included in the price, but I would have had to pay an additional price for that as well. The snow room was out of order. That hurt.
We had to wait a quarter of an hour to get our room after 3pm. It would have been nice if the restaurant had even offered a drink as compensation for being late.
We had a big room with our own balcony. There were plush pillows but no thin pillow which would have been better. There were coffee/tea making facilities. No fridge. We didn't know how to use the soda machine. High-quality bathroom products. Varied buffet breakfast. Good service everywhere. The hotel was quiet.
I had announced that it was a round years birthday trip, but no one congratulated me.
This was our first visit. We have a good time, but many times we wouldn't be able to walk up the hill from a city trip. Own car is quite necessary.
The strangest thing was the huge number of different light combinations in the room that we tried to tune. It was a bit difficult to get the different lights to work.
The funicular was closed.
