Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed at Aatto ja Elli midsummer 2015 during our friends wedding. I was little sceptic at what to expect since hotel only had only one 1 out of 5 star review. However, We were pleasantly surprised at what we got.

The room was clean, beds were comfy and we even had sauna in room even though we did not have time to use it. The room was probably old apartment and it was quite large.

Day we arrived it was raining a bit so it was cool to find some umbrellas from hotel cafe we could borrow. Breakfast next morning was quite basic hotel stuff.

Few times i was looking for staff and i was not able to find anybody. Staff wont be the 24/7, so at night you are on your own.

Overall, hotel was quite good value for money.

We were on our way to home and tried to find some place for lunch. Our family had a fantastic pizza and also a very good hamburger and a pepper steak at Aatto& Elli. The place didn' t look so attractive from the street but it was worth the stop. Thank You! Service was friendly and fast.

Aatto&Elli offered us extremely nice stay for one night in January 2016. As the winter is not a high season for a small Finnish town we had a privilege to be only guests of the hotel. Hotel staff was extremely helpful and our wishes and needs were fulfilled. We felt ourselves welcome for our whole stay.

Aatto&Elli provided us nice and cosy rooms that had gone through some renovations lately. Good breakfast and restaurant downstairs!

the beds were quite comfortable and coffee at breakfast was good. That’s about the only good thing about this hotel.
We only booked this hotel because it was the only one at this location. We were visiting friends who had rented a cabin. When we got there nobody was at the hotel. This was at 3pm; check in time. Luckily there were 2 ladies around who called the owner for us who then showed up. ‘Our restaurant is closed on Mondays’ was the explanation we got. And ‘do you want to pay now?’ was pretty much the rest of the conversation. // Room was small; no biggy. Bathroom was REALLY small. Everything had a grimy touch to it. // Breakfast was very basic but ok. Picked a coffee cup, turned it around and it had coffee stains in it from the previous person. 2nd, 3rd, 4th cup etc was the same. Half the cups on their stash were unwashed. I put them aside and let the owner know. Cutlery also not quite clean. All in all we would not stay here again. More than €100 a night for a 1* hotel is just too much!!

The website for this hotel didn't show any prices, and only minimal photos, but I really needed a room in Joutsa for one night, so I asked about their availability and accepted what they offered anyway: 90€ for a double room, even though I found it very expensive. Oh, I need to add it took them one month to answer my email... and they did only when I sent a second email asking again.

I was very surprised when I found out my room wasn't ready when I arrived, and the hotel is extremely old and in very bad condition, with cheap, bad quality furniture... not what you'd expect when you pay 90€/night! I didn't stay long, though, I went out only to return very late at night, when there was no staff. Too bad, because then I realized that everything was dirty: dust everywhere, a ton of hair in the shower drain, some mold on the shower wall... not to mention that the shower plate took up most of the bathroom space! Very uncomfortable.

The bed was so narrow I couldn't move without falling down (yes, I'm overweight, but even when I was 30 kg heavier than I am now, I never had a problem with any bed), and before I could sleep (or try to) I had to kill some bugs that were between the matress and the matress cover. Ew! Also, the bedspread, the curtains and the table cloth felt heavy and thick with grime. Another problem was the door... there was no handle inside, so it was hard to close it.

A terrible hotel, which I never expected to find in a country like Finland, where things usually work well and people are reliable. Needless to say I refused to pay the 90€, I easily got a discount when I complained the next morning. The only good things about this place are its location, very close to the bus station, and the staff that is friendly.

Hey DarkFlamme, i'm very sorry to hear about your sad visit at Aatto ja Elli. One of the main reasons for my answer is that this hotels ownership have changed, and i'm the new owner. Mainly we are about to rebuild this hotel from cellar to roof, and mainly try to give a heavy facelift to this whole hotel and restaurants. This feedback is only feedback that you can find from whole internet, and i can't say that this is lie or bad feedback, this is what Aatto ja Elli used to be for true, and we are about to rebuild this old, traditional and important hotel for our small home town Joutsa! Thanks for feedback and i hope that if you are visiting Joutsa again, you should come check Aatto ja Elli and we will give you room for free to stay, just for your bad experiment at past! -Visa-Matti Kuitunen- Hotel Aatto ja Elli, owner

We visited two summers ago and had a great experience with the hotel. The owner was very accommodating and helpful, giving us advice and just chatting with us.

They had salmon, meats etc. set up for breakfast but when we asked, they whipped up vegetarian breakfast options specifically for us! The restaurant/bar downstairs also had plenty of vegetarian options on the menu which we did not expect at all in a small town like Joutsa. The best pizza we had had in a while.

The room was very quiet and clean, no complaints.
