Hotel Katajanokka is a unique hotel in Helsinki where chic design, uncompromised comfort and personal service meet in a historic former prison setting - a short walk from the city center.

We booked a junior suite for our arrival from Tallinn. This hotel is conveniently located near the Viking Terminal. One week before, we were informed the plumbing works of the junior suites will not be ready and we have to move to a superior room for the price of a standard room. They would have reserved the hotel sauna privately for us because junior suites have a sauna. It is not the change of rooms why I give just four stars. It is because there were some issues in our superior room. The television was located behind the sofa. Not so convenient to watch television. The sofa had brown stains. There was no power outlet on the other side of the bed. There were no bathrobes. We have stayed two times in a standard room and they have been better. The superior room was not much…

We didn’t realize this was previously a prison and converted into a hotel. There are 2 original cells still in the hotel that you can visit on the restaurant floor (basement). The first was last used in the 1800’s and the other, more recently in 2012. It was a prison used for white collar crime so no malicious energies found in the hotel. The rooms are clean, warm & well equipped. The staff are friendly & cannot do enough for you. Breakfast has the usual foods as well as the some traditional Finnish foods. We only stayed one night, and it was such a pleasure. Helsinki is tiny & the hotel is perfectly situated to be able to catch the tram (tram no 4 - areas AB), right outside the hotel. Or you are able to walk easily around the city. A beautiful place to stay.

Hotel Kata...was great. former prison redone to great standards. Very private, quiet hotel. Great service. The #4 tram is literally outside the door....go anywhere in the city! Highly recommend this place, as it's in a cute, nice neighborhood.

Imagine my surprise when I checked in to learn it is a restored prison - A restoration really well done. My room was comfortable and well appointed. Loved the heated floors in the bathroom. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Very good quality hotel in old prison. We travelled with a dog and in the room there was presents for it and a bowl. Nice design of common area and inside the room. Tasty food in restaurant (with nice interior as well). Very nice staff.

A thoughtful experience. Confortable, practical, cosy and very gentle service. Furthermore you walk around these enormous corridors and think how it must have been when it was a prison. The gym is small but functional and the original cells kept are worth a visit

Dear Giuliotoscani, Thank you for your review. As mentioned before, I am happy the gym was still enjoyable despite the small size, as during the prison time it was outside :D More than that I am happy that the service here was good, it is something I am glad to share with my staff! I hope to see you hear again at some point. Happy 2020! With kind regards, Sami Joutsenvuo Chief Concierge Hotel Katajanokka

We stayed on a one night stop over on our way to Lapland for our honeymoon. The staff was courteous and very helpful. We enjoyed walking around and learning about the prison. The rooms are unique and a little small but they work for what we needed.

A former prison converted into a wonderful hotel. It was my first experience of this kind. The rooms are cosy. Windows cannot be opened but A/C works perfect. Disabled people may face challenges with the shower. Breakfast was not included in the room rate and came with an extra EUR 20. However, the breakfast buffet was excellent.

Dear cafeaulait69, Thank you for your review. I am happy you liked this extraordinary experience here inside of these thick walls. The windows actually can be opened, but for safety reasons by the staff only. We are happy to help with opening the windows. We also have rooms for disabled, where there are i.e. easy access to the shower. I hope you enjoyed Helsinki overall. Happy New Year! I decided to try out this former county prison as I was taking the Viking boat to Tallinn in the morning and the terminal is within a short walking distance. Booked a junior suite with a sauna. It was by no means even a junior suite but at max a deluxe room. I understand that they need to work with the hardware they have but they should not misclassify rooms as suites. The neighborhood is good and within short walking distance from the city center. May return when I don't need a suite.

Staff are friendly & prompt response. No such luxury facility or restaurant but well cleaned & everything is enough to stay comfortable & quiet. It’s located bit far from the central station but easy to access with taxis & trams. Good distance for walking to Uspenski Cathedral.
