N.B. Stay was in November 2018 but unable to choose this option. A really interesting hotel! The hotel used to be a former prison and has managed to maintain this nod to its past - whilst also delivering as a really nice and upscale hotel. Location is good. Its in a quieter and more residential area, but with easy access to the main city centre (around 5 mins away on the tram). The hotel is situated 5 mins away from the ferry terminal, which was convenient as I’ve just travelled over from Tallinn. Waking in to the hotel, you pass through the old prison gate. On entering, you come across a small reception area. The corridors to the rooms still have the features of a jail, as do the doors in to the rooms. The rooms are tastefully decorated and are on the small side. They wee

Never been to jail? Well, here is the possibilty to do so, as the Katajanokka Hotel used to be a county prison before. Although it is obviously extensivly renovated, you will still have the feeling of the former history of this building. For more details and also for information what to do in Helsinki see also traveltreasuresbymarion Very special and very recommended. Rooms are all with modern interiors and service is friendly. Hotel restaurant serves very good food as well and is also open for non-hotel guests.

I should be staying at Hotel Katajanokka from tomorrow 18th March instead I am here in Ireland typing this review. Many thanks to the wonderful staff who dealt with my request for a refund of my non-refundable holiday. At all times i was dealt with in a friendly manner by the staff. Marriot Hotel Group well done on making that decision to refund all applications. I will stay in Hotel Katajanokka on my next visit to Helsinki.

The history of the hotel is so unique. From the grounds to the lobby to the room, everything has been renovated exquisitely with the original purpose of the building still maintained. Everyone was very friendly. The hotel had very nice accommodations and the restaurant was very good (ate there for breakfast). It was in a quiet part of town but easy walking distance to many nice restaurants, the sea pool, or the Viking Cruise Lines. Definitely would recommend!

We had no idea this hotel was a former prison. I think it finally clicked in when we saw all the bars and handcuff decorations - lol. But it was soooo cool! I love the history and the modern design of the hotel. The room was a bit small, but it was very comfortable. Also the breakfast buffet was delicious, and the people who work here are very pleasant and professional. In all, it was a great stay!
