About

#1 of 1 boutique hotel in Oulu

De Gamlas Hem Hotel & Restaurant is fully renovated, 17 room boutique hotel in a heritage protected building near the centre of Oulu. As early as in 1906, the building was used to house, care for, and provide food for elderly upper-class women from Oulu. It was a private retirement home. Swedish fighter pilots were also housed in the building during the World War II. Today, we welcome you to this wooden Art Nouveau villa to enjoy some peace, quiet and delicious food among the beautiful ceramic tiled stoves and log walls. Cozy and delicious! The ideology behind our charming and atmospheric restaurant is based on our very own vision that combines modern cuisine with De Gamlas Hem’s traditions. We favour seasonal produce as well as the best local products. Just like a hundred years ago, the dining hall is still “wonderfully suited for entertaining guests”.

Excellent facility for those who want to get rid of "sterile chain hotels". You are in the palms of history in a modern way. As a decoration a wood burning old tall owen is just that. The bed was very comfortable, what a good sleep. Our room was along the smaller street and there were no noise at all. Heated WC/shover floor was nice. Breakfast was delicious as well. The quality/price ratio was superb. We liked our stay a lot and if staying overnight in Oulu, this is the one we'll use. The Queen room was quite smalll. The only power socket, where you can charge your phone in the nighttime, is down near the floor below the table - tedious. There are two sockets in WC, but when you turn off lights, charging ends as well. You can't keep the lights on in the nighttime, because the wall is transparent. For those who have back or feet problems the bed attached to the wall can be difficult.

Very small room with glass wall between WC and bedroom. If there would be eg. fire in the corridor you can not escape from the room - windows open only about 15cm and the head of the bed is bolted on the wall - dangerous! Breakfast without warm foods except porridge. Very friendly staff. Nice historical building near city center for one person to stay.

I have had three dinners here in few months, and all of them has been dissapointing. Fish has been tasteless, same thing with the risotto. Risotto was also too creamy and cheesy. Meat was also tasteless. Desserts have been good though. Nice location and chatacter with history, but you get better food elsewhere.

Rooms are too little for me? I think also that breakfast could be a little bit more flexible. Lacation of the hotel is very good. I stayed three nights and was forced to check out after one night and again check in for two nights.

Super cozy and characteristic hotel with friendly staff. We spend two nights with a family of four. We had a two rooms reserved next to each others. Breakfast was really good and it was nice that breakfast items were changed a bit for the second morning. Definetily place to go If visiting Oulu, or just for the staycation.

We really loved this boutique hotel in Oulu. It felt safe and taking good care of its customers. Rooms are small but adequate. Loved their lunch. I love the atmosphere and christmasfeel. Great bonus is a free Hukka membership for a day, it’s a huge gym and sport center near by.

This beautifully renovated hotel served as my accommodation due a work trip in Oulu for a few days. I stayed in two different rooms. Both were very comfortable, clean and had a nice modern bathroom. Most of the rooms have also an old stove as an ornament. Although the rooms are not very spacious, they still are very comfortable. The rooms are quiet as the old building itself absorbs a lot of sounds and noices. The bed was great to sleep on. The tv is good, but still missed some international channels. The peculiar reading light serves also as a shelving, which I noticed much later. The reception and generally all staff members were very friendly and helpful! Also the lobby and the five o´clock tee/coffee time was great. It was also nice to notice that the hotel honors the Swedish volunteer airmen, who operated in Finland during the WW2 and stayed in this building during their mission. The breakfast was very good and the facilities nicely decorated and spacious. I did start my days with content. Too bad I didn´t have time to try the restaurant. Maybe if there would have been some info about it in the room itself would propably have persuaded me to try to dine. The hotel is easy to locate and has a free parking lot. There are also a few bicycles to borrow. For warm sunny days/evenings there is a large terrace as well. What I missed actually, being in Finland was a sauna naturally.

This was late booking to visit family who live in Oulu and having time with sister-in-law and her partner. It was what my partner could find at short notice for a visit to home town between Christmas and the new year. We were all very pleasantly surprised by the quality and friendliness of the hotel and restaurant. The food was magnificent high quality finish Nord in cooking at its best. Everyone loved the meal. The bar was well run and coated with a number of family and fresh IP groups way over filling the place with humour and quality service. I did feel for them given the highly mixed and in some cases raucous groups.!!! The decor of the repurposes care home was excellent. Only fly in the ointment the beds are fare to narrow for two Normal to small sized people!! Also the on suit facility’s are idiosyncratic privacy had all of us couples very amused and slightly red faced . Over all very nice stay recommended to all who want a try oulo experience of quality. We will use it again for sure. It is also convent to the twin center and the airport train station etc.
