This was our second time at Ruka suites, we really like the location, very convenient to all areas. Nice and spacious and we love the sauna. The only down side is you can’t control the heating and it only comes on twice a day, so can be quite cold at times, it’s not a huge issue but it was one of the things we remembered the first time and still had the same feeling.
The warming cabinet kept tripping out when it got too hot so we could only use it on a low temperature which barely worked so that was quite annoying.
The other issues is there is no manned reception/ security and the people above us were extremely noisy within the “quiet time” so we couldn’t complain.
And the fire alarm issue should be sorted so it isn’t as sensitive or shouldn’t have to pay a fine. I felt I was always worried about setting it off with deodorant or something so small.
Other than those minor issues I would still recommend and return.

Response from Marjo Heikkinen, Asiakaspalvelu at SKI-INN Rukasuites Apartments
Responded 3 May 2020
Thank you for your feedback and sorry about the late answer. We apologize the issues that you had during your holiday. The warming cabinet can overheat on high temperature and it stops working. It should work fine on a low temperature. We have instructions in the apartments how to prevent the fire alarm setting off. We also gladly give information at the reception about the fire alarm system. We have a manned reception working every day and at night time you can reach us over the phone. There is also a security service and they come to help if there is too much noise. You can find all the contact information and addresses in the apartment book. Thank you for staying in RukaSuites apartments!

Firstly a tale of woe... We were booked to go with Inghams to Ruka in January 2011, having booked the holiday in June 2010. However in October 2010 Inghams decided to pull out of Ruka for the season. We were gutted.
Having been there three times (2006, 2007 and 2009) before and tried a few other Scandinavian locations we are pretty convinced Ruka is perfect for a family with young children.
To cut a long story short, we have just rebooked (April 2011) to return to Ruka in January 2012 with Crystal.
Ruka has many fantastic features which really do set it apart from other locations. One of the biggest being the amount of slope time available in the day. The normal piste opening hours are usually 9:30am - 7pm, yes 7PM!!! Meaning that once your family are all tired you can still go outside at 4pm and have a few more hours of fun on the slopes. On a Friday night they stay open until 11pm which is just unheard of. I'm an intermediate to advanced snowboarder and have been to several different places and the lifts shut at the latest 5pm, and in Norway as early as 3:30pm low season. So these wonderful long piste days mean you can go out for a snowboard / ski in the morning, go out in the afternoon on a winter adventure (of which there are so many available) and then if you have the energy still, get a couple more hours snowboarding/skiing in at the end of the day. Just fantastic.
The pistes are all superbly well groomed every day and because of the colder climate there isn't the issue of snow lumps building up at the bottom of runs and I have never known it to be slushy at the end of the days. Yes the runs are shorter 1.3km is the longest run, but it is more than made up for that in quality of piste and also the range of piste available.
We first stayed in a log cabin which was wonderful, a real magical experience in a quiet area. I would recommend this at least once as it is such a fantastic way to spend a week. Each subsequent visit and indeed our next visit is staying in the RukaSuites. The RukaSuites are part of the Kumpare building, a complex of shops, a cafe, Pizza restuarant, ski / snowboard lockers (free with the Suites), gym etc. This can all be accessed without having to put all of your winter clothing back on which makes life easier. The RukaSuites are very clean and modern but with lots of facilities including a broadband feed direct to the room via an ethernet cable which is great, as I usually have to do a bit of work. With the Suites being located right in the middle of the village they are close to everything including the large supermarket (about 10m down a hill) and only 50m from the frontslope lift /ski hire shop/lift pass shop.
As my wife and son are vegeterian, this can cause us some problems, but the Rukahovi and 'Piste' restuarants are really good.
As for the area itself Ruka is in an area of outstanding natural beauty. If the idea of trees so filled with snow that they should fall over is your idea of heaven then see you in Ruka next year!

My family and I have just returned from Ruka again. We stayed in the Ruka Suites the same as last year and enjoyed every moment of it. This time was really cold though. It was minus 21 degrees on our balcony at midday and minus 34 degrees at the top of the fell and bitterley cold. Even 5 layers was not enough !!!!!! The snow was fantastically deep which the boys enjoyed a lot . If anyone wants advice on going on the learing to ski packages/booking a skiing holiday /where to stay etc this has been our 4th time to Lapland and I would be pleased to share my experiences.

Ruka suites is a great place to stay within a short stroll to the main lifts. We have been travelling here since 2007 and seen the area grow and flourish. The main reason to use this accommodation is the skiing and location.
The main bedroom has twins beds pushed together with simple wardrobes and hooks. The other bedrooms have bunk beds; single on top with double on the bottom. Wet room is good with sauna, which is needed after a days skiing. Kitchen although small is good enough for basic self catering and even has a dishwasher. A must for skiing is the drying closet which for is large enough for 3 set of ski clothes and boots at the bottom. Also within the complex is a lockable ski rack.
A range of shops within the complex and the plaza has a wide range. The front has a great view of the slopes. Normally stay in February which means the slopes are quiet and not too busy.
Made the mistake of being at the suites over New Year. Extremely noisy every night with guest from the eastern boarders partying all night long. Despite a quiet notice and complaints to reception this was not dealt with. It was almost as if this behaviour was expected and accepted from these guests. Also their attitude on the pistes and views about queuing leave a lot to be desired . This is the reason for the lower rating. Lesson learnt... Don't visit at that time of year. Hopefully if we ever visit again it will be at a different time of year.

We stayed at Ruka 43 Suites and it was great. Excellent room planning (able to squeeze 2 bedrooms, living-room+kitchen, bathroom, sauna, toilet and drying cupboard in 43 meters apartment)! Everything was clean and worked very good. We needed their assistance few times and it was given very fast each time we called. The location is perfect if you don't have a car- all the restaurants and the shops are in 1-5 min walk as well as the lifts to the west slopes and the ski bus to the east slopes (for those who learn to ski). Based on previous reviews we asked for a room facing the lake and it was great- the sunsets and the view from the window were stunning.
The only thing I would recommend them to change is to add proper hotel-style curtains on the windows to prevent the light from coming in in the morning and replace two single beds in master bedroom with one double.
Overall- greatly recommended

We came to Ruka on a skiing holiday in February with Crystal and stayed at the ruka village inn, we booked half board which alowed us to eat across in PisteBar every night and can defiantly say its the best value money ski holliday we have had. The hotel is fantastic the rooms were perfect and the sauna just want we needed after dealing with -30 temperatures on the slopes (make sure you read the manual on the sauna, turning it on wasnt as obvious as the dials made out). The small kitchenette had everything you needed to russle up something if you were going self catering. I cant really comment on staff etc as we didnt really encounter any or need to, we were given are room pass codes on the bus on the way in and just walked straight in with our bags and up the lift. Breakfast was had in Cowboy's which is attached to the reception area and consisted of a continental style buffet which was perfectly addiquate. The Ski room downstairs was ok it mainly was just some lockers to keep them in but it helped. Its only across the little roundabout in the village centre and your at the bottom of the chairlifts so location wise it couldnt be better. Ruka itself is brilliant its so compact but yet doesnt feel like theres nothing there, everything interlinks and has been built sympathetically. The ski runs are ideal for anyone learning or on there 1st few weeks of skiing wide open runs with barely a sole on them. Mainly tree lined and stunning vistas everywhere you look. Quiet is an understatement there were times we were lucky to see anyone on the same run as us, theres enough also to keep you happy when it comes to variety with a decent quantity of runs to last the week. PisteBar was the place to go during the day at the bottom of the ski runs and again on a saturday night but its really doesnt get going till about 11pm.We did most of the trips on offer Husky sleigh rides, Snowmobiling & Ice Fishing all were excellent and added to the enjoyment of the holiday and best of all we got to see the northern lights which were the icing on the cake.

We have just returned from a week at the Ruka suites. We went with Crystal, and they were excellent. Our apartment was clean and warm. There is a supermarket in the block and sufficient restaurants very close to hand. It was cold but it is the most magical place. We went for the cross country sking which was excellent.

We stayed in the ruka suites in January 2010 (the smaller apartment)
Facilities: Two bedrooms (one double, one with bunk beds) Drying closet Brilliant Shower Awesome Sauna – perfect after a day on the slopes Kitchen – fridge, hob, kettle and microwave.
We were there on a self catering basis which we found to be perfect the supermarket within the building where the apartments are located had everything we needed although there was a larger supermarket just a little walk away or bus ride if you don’t want to walk. You could use the lift pass on the busses to get them for free which was a bonus.
The ski area was perfect for us on a couple’s holiday with mixed abilities. Although smaller than areas in places like France, we found there to be plenty of slopes and the area was stunning. Ruka is one of the most beautiful places I have visited and the village/town has everything you need. There is a subways, a pizza place, a few bars and restaurants.
We are glad to hear that Crystal ski now offer this holiday as Inghams stopped selling it (in my opinion a big mistake). We will definitely return when we can

We have travelled to Ruka Finland and stayed at the Ruka Apartments several times, Approx 20 mins by taxi from Kuusamo airport, Fantastic location ski run 3 mins walk, village just outside of suites, Good value restaurants, Ski hire shop on way to runs, apartments have several options regarding bedrooms, some have cookers with ovens, some just have basic cooking facilities.Once in apartment block you have several options of eating places, subway, pizza, chinese, a food store which has a wide range of food items and local products , also several gift shops.there is also an information desk and bowling alley. The ski runs at Ruka are perfect for begginers and intermediate , they have some fantastic blue runs which seem to go on forever, the reds are good not to challenging, ideal for families a ski school is also N. We have been in January also February but found it too cold approx -15 and with the wind chill factor it is a lot colder. Next year we have already booked our flights (finnair) in march which will be good for skiing but not too cold.Hardly find any queues on some runs we have been the only ones on it,next year will be our 5th time at this ski resort, cannot recommend it enough. No swimming pool and room service not available.Last time we went to Ruka was April 2102.

This suites hotel is perfect for individual travellers. There is a nice Colorado restaurant downstairs where you have breakfast (but unfortunately breakfast starts only from 8 am). I had the smallet roomtype, but I still enjoyed it much. There is everything you need in the room, and even a private sauna!!! Many extra towels which is useful. There is a cozy balcony with chairs, which is great after using the sauna. Free wi-fi is available. There is no door key, but you have to enter your secret code (5 numbers) to get in your room. The same thing the hotel enterance at night. This property is perfect for skiing, the location is just 2 minutes from Ruka, and on the ground floor they have special ski closets to keep your stuff.
